Aside from these two things (worn vinyl cuff and the nylon side being ripped apart from road rash) the boot have held up great a
Just bought a second pair of these boot today. My previous pair (that I am currently wearing as I write this) have lasted me for a little over 3 years. I initially bought these to be worn as riding boots and quickly transitioned into my every day footwear. They have served me quite well and have even held up through a motorcycle accident. --The bike pinned my foot to the ground and dragged me 50 feet. The nylon shell was worn away at the ankle ball joint, but the padding and material beneath that held up firm. After 3 years, the outer covering of the vinyl cuff at the top of the boots has worn down to the mesh that holds the fabric together. Aside from these two things (worn vinyl cuff and the nylon side being ripped apart from road rash) the boot have held up great and are still very comfortable and wearable.

Been buying these boots for 9 years.
I have been wearing these boots for 9 years. I buy a new pair every year. I work in them so the wear and tear I put them through is very severe. I work in snow in the winter and hot 95 degrees in the summer and through rain. They are comfortable. So much so that I can run in them for lengthy periods without my feet aching. The zipper on the side makes it extremely easy to slip on and off. They bend with your foot well and have great treading on the bottom. These are the type of boots that you hold on to even when you buy new ones because you can use the old ones for the outdoors. I have 1 new pair and 2 old pairs that I refuse to throw away.

Light, and aggressive looking boot but a poor tread design.
10-13-18 Important update. Again about the poor tread design including a photo showing the problem. The large spaces between the studs on the bottom cause them to punch through the sole into your feet mainly at the ball. I have tried different inserts to fix the problem but its still there. I love the way this boot looks and really wanted to make it my regular purchase but until they fix this problem I will not be buying them again. I have only been wearing the boots for three days now but really like them. I always order boots a 1/2 size larger than I need and put a thin "gel" insert under the existing pad that comes with them. These fit perfect like that and are very comfortable. I'm a non active duty US Marine and prefer a light, aggressive looking, tactical boot just like these. I do not use the zipper option. I prefer using the laces. Keep up the good work "Bates". This is an update, so after wearing them a while now I can truly feel the tread pushing through the bottom of the boot into the ball of my foot. The round tread pattern is spaced too wide so you can feel each one. I have tried several different expensive inserts but they are still very uncomfortable. Great looking boot with a really pore tread design. I will not be buying another pair. I'm going over to the Rocky Alpha Force boot instead.

Light boot that can take some use
The boot were a little big. I wear a size 11 to be safe and I got this. They are a little on the big size, but a really good boot for the price. The toes and sides are leather, the strapping, lace bar, and heal are plastic, but the are a breathable water proof boot. The side zipper is amazing. It took a minute to break them in, but really like them. I use them for everything, and most recently to be out in the snow to and from the car or to shovel the walks. They would be cold to wear in 10 degree or below weather. Again, super light and well made.

COMFORTABLE and a GREAT BOOT update 5/30/19
(5/30/19Just ordered my second pair 👍they seemed to have lasted me about one year with approximately 20 to 25 foot patrol miles per week on them I’m very pleased 👍 I’ve always bought Redwing patrol boots from the local store. Customer service is always top notch and it’s a good boot. Over the last ten years they’ve not only been forced into outsourcing but seemed to have less of a selection for me in patrol boots. So I’m going to say this boot is excellent not only is it less than half the price but it’s got a more roomier toe compartment because of the lack of the built in toe shield which I Believe all the Redwings line have a built in guard . I opened the box put my custom orthopedic inserts in put them on my feet and I’ve been patrolling all morning with out my hammer toes, corns or bunions being squeezed. I’m 68 and doing security at a facility where we are constantly on our feet the whole shift. I’m definitely recommending these boots. I never thought I’d buy boots online.

good to be be back
I used to buy these all the time and swore by them for work over a decade. A few years ago I tried a boot bearing the name of an awesome gun company. They came and they fit fine and I wore them. I ended up buying another pair so I could have one for street use. N ow the time came to buy another work pair and I went with Bates and I am glad I did. To try the others on and then try the Bates I can see and feel the difference. Soon enough I will buy a pair for street as well. These slip on and fit so well where the "gun company" boot does not slide on smoothly and has developed a crook or bend on the back in the ankle area where bit catches and I really have to yank it on. The bates are like butter in comparison. IO noticed it seems they changed the zipper since my last pair too and the slightly curved zipper tag is groovy and ergonomic. Buy Bates boots and if they make guns consider trying them but remember they made boots first...just like that other company made excellent guns first and then used their name to sell other stuff. We all live and learn but some of us do it in comfortable and kick ass boots

happy feet, happy Deputy
Being a big guy it's hard to find the right footwear and I finally got hooked up with Bates 2 years ago and loved the ones I had but they got discontinued so I went out on a limb and got these boots. So far, a week into wearing them and they feel great, no break in period. They are a little bit longer than what I thought but I'd rather them be too long than my toes crammed in the toe box. You won't go wrong with these boots. They fit the budget, wear well, look good and will last you. I'm a Deputy at 350lbs, wearing them on 10hr shifts and so far they haven't blown a zipper or showed signs of fatigue or breakdown. Hope this helps review helps you make your choice.

Both of those boots took a while to break in (like 6 months) and the bates boot was cheaper and seemingly better than either boot
Review after 1 week: I bought this to replace my Milwaukee zipper motorcycle riding boot that after seven years of service and a few zippers and then finally wore out the soles. I also had a hiking/work boot with steel toes, that I was also using for MC riding, as well (in between zipper repairs on the Milwaukee). Both of those boots took a while to break in (like 6 months) and the bates boot was cheaper and seemingly better than either boot. Not a steel/composite toe boots: I am not getting the steel toe with this version of the bates boot but I think the protection in the toes is good if I got in accident. Comfort: They are a lot more comfortable and my feat do not sweat in them like my former MC boots and I have not even had them a week. They are a little tough getting on via zipper but I have some room to address my feet swelling after an active ride; I can probably ware two sets of socks if I lace them for it. Sole: The biggest benefit is the sole, it is rubber and it has wide spaces between the tracks, so if I put my foot down in some gravel, they do a great job at making contact with the ground and I don't slide, which has always been the issue. when I dump my bike in the past. .

Very comfortable boots
I do security work and am on my feet for several hours per night. I got tired of the cheap tactical boots and decided to spend the money on a good quality boot. I am so glad I decided to get these boots. My show size is a 13 4E wide and I was concerned the boots were not going to be wide enough. When I put them on, my feet felt like they went to Heaven. They are very comfortable and feel like they are already broken in. The inside tongue goes all the way down to almost the tip of the toes, giving you that nice soft feeling on the top of your toes and not the typical burning sensation from the break in period. The side zipper opens far enough to just slip your foot in without fighting to get the boot on to your foot. Zipper is very durable and appears to be made of good quality. I cannot believe how comfortable these were to walk in right off the bat. I walk on a lot of rock beds at night, so I went out to my rock bed front yard and walked on my rocks. I could hardly feel I was walking on rocks at all. I would highly recommend these boots for anyone in the law enforcement or security field. They fit great, look great, and perform awesome!!

Wonderfull boots.
I wear boots all day, every day, literally. And yes I have even worn them to church. (it drives my wife nuts) I wear them 360 days a year, (my wife yells at me and makes me wear my sneakers on vacation), but I still take my boots along, just in case. So I want good comfortable boots, and these fit the bill. Where I work we are on our feet all day long, standing on concrete doing mechanic work, to dirt work and paving. So as I said I want comfort for my feet. These are light weight which makes them nice for walking, yet sturdy to hold up for rigorous work. I love the side zip feature which makes them quick and easy to get on and off. This is my third pair of BATES boots, and I have never had a problem with the zippers. As they break in, you will have to redo the strings a couple times to keep them from flopping around on your feet ( unless you like them loose) , but that is no problem. They don't make your feet sweat in hot weather, and don't let your feet freeze in cold weather. They are just a great all around boot.
