I never used a center hole punch previously. I just took a sharp pointed chisel and a hammer and made a dimple. So I took a chance with this Neiko unit. It is easy to adjust for soft or had materials and so far I am very happy with my purchase, but also sorry I didn't buy one 20 years ago. I recommend this product

Every once in a great while I find a new tool so great that I wonder how I got along without it for so many years. This is great for making a pilot hole before drilling, or for marking the spot for a nail to hang a picture. Such a simple and effective concept. I love it.

I've used it primarily for punching starter holes for drilling 1/16" holes in stainless and silver plated flatware. I like that I can hold it with the red plastic cushion in the palm of my hand with my fingers around the pointed end. This allows for accurate placement of the tip on slick uneven surfaces. Then it's pretty easy to plunge the spring-loaded tip a few times to make a dimple. I tried other types but this is the best one so far. Of course there are probably better ones, but not at this price. No way.

I live in Houston, and Houston is now quite well known for its annual flood situation, so I am getting this just in case I get myself ina tricky flooding situation. I tried out this tool on a piece of metal, and I am very impressed by the punch that this little tool exerts on the metal surface. Even if I don't use it to break my car window, I certainly can use it for home improvement projects where I need to market the spot for drilling etc. Aside from this tool, I recommend getting a seat belt cutter too, just in case. Obviously the best survival tool is your brain. "turn around don't drown!"

Pros: Makes a mark just about anywhere, used on wood, mild steel, aluminum, even some cobalt steel just as a test. Even on lightest tension setting it puts a dimple on some cobalt steel drill bits. The dot on the left is high tension the dot on the right is lowest. Cons: Tensioner doesn't really adjust how much of a dimple you put in an object or really how much force it takes. There is a difference when pushing just not much of one.

Here's the thing, at first I wanted to save some money and ordered this from amazon over-seas vendor, delivery to NY took 3 weeks and upon close inspection realized that what I got was a knock-off, then I ordered a real thing from US vendor with Amazon Prime shipping and for only $3.90 more I received genuine Neiko product, and the difference is huge: it makes deeper holes in metal, spring is stronger and it feels more solid, I've made an illustration of what genuine Neiko center puncher looks like comparing to the knock off.

This tool is a must have if you plan on opening a hole on steel, if you want pression. Opens a nice mark on a normal carbon steel surface. You can open a hole with a 1/8 bit and still get autocentered with the groove it makes. I like the plastic red ball on top. It gives me a good grip on my hand, feels confortable while I apply preassure. It all feels good quality, and does not deteriorate over the impact. I have done about 50 punches on steel and I can't see any signs of deterioration on the tip or the body of the tool. Very happy with this

I had one from harbor freight for $3 - made exactly one dent, and broke. Got another one from home depot for $10 (according to common "wisdom", you get what you pay for. Made three dents, and broke. Moving upwards - performance and price are correlated. This one already made a dozen and still works!

I recently fabricated a set of brackets to install a set of lights on my trucks bed rack and I'm glad I ordered this tool. I was able to mark the location of the holes I needed to drill in the barstock quickly and easily. The striking force is adjustable and I found this works best with the adjustment screwed all the way in for full force. Once I did this my drill bits did not wander and every hole was precisely placed. At this price point I didn't expect or get a carbide tip and if I was to use this for professional fabrication, I'd get the Starrett. For 90% of the gargeneers and gearheads looking for a good marking / dimpling tool, this is more than adequate to the job.
