It sews perfectly. Love it.😁
this is an update 1018. I love this machine but for big quilting projects. its just to light weight of a machine for that. small projects like pot holders clothes or smaller quilting . the other thing is I cannot get a bobbin to tread correctly and end up with the machine not sewing. I resolved that by buying a set of pre wound bobbins this machine is very light weight and for me that's a must . I have not tried all the stitches . my own mistake ( my cat knocked the machine off the sewing table. she was setting on it I think. and jumped off. the machine did not hold up to good. the case it self cracked and the thread holders busted off and it broke some thing in side the machine. ) so it is not cat approved lady's.

good bang for your buck
I needed a small machine to fit in my medium Tutto rolling bag. I checked the dimensions of all the smaller mechanical and computerized machines and this one seemed best. I have a Brother quilting machine (heavy, straight stitch, workhorse), a Babylock Aria (big, does everything), and basically outgrew my mechanical Elna that I used for travel mostly, and really wanted a machine with a needle down option and variety of stitches. Another reviewer had issues with the machine's light weight. It is light. However, for travel & classes, that is ideal. The machine set up is easy; the DVD is a bonus. No issues at all; refreshing to that take the first stitch (without a leader/bunnytail/spider, whatever you wish to call it) and not unthread the needle! Particularly at this price point this is a fine machine.

Totally great sewing machine UPDATE REVIEW: Machine now doesn't work!
UPDATE INFO: My sewing machine was delivered Sept. 15th 2018...have used it properly since. Have used this for various sewing projects from mending to formal dresses. Worked great until this past week. Handwheel locked up. Followed instructions for troubleshooting CODE E6 to no avail. Called product support and was told would need to take to nearest Brothers repair center. Called them and was told it would be at least 5 days from drop off date to get back.....I have had other brands of sewing machines over my 66 years and have never once had to have any repaired. I simply chose to purchase a newer model even though those machine still worked. I FEEL WITH THE MACHINE NOT EVEN BEING 2 MONTHS OLD IT SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. TO DO IT AGAIN I WOULD NOT REBUY THIS MACHINE.

Must have for Quilters!! as well as others.....
My wife was a little skeptical when she read this was a "Computerized" Sewing Machine but I convinced her to give it a try. Well let me just say it was plugged in and the only time she's NOT using it is when she's sleeping. She loves all of the stitches, the way is runs and gives her a "strong stitch". She loves the Quilting features and the extension table as it makes working with large piece so much easier. An AWESOME machine in her words.

I love this sewing machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do a lot of sewing & machine quilting. This is my 3rd sewing machine after many years of sewing. This Brother HC1850 is the best I've ever had. It sews, quilts & embroideries with a computer that is easy to use. The instructions are clear enough for novice seamstresses. I am disabled so sometimes my leg muscles just will not work. This machine gives you a choice of using the foot pedal or you can use the controls on the machine. It will move the presser foot up/down, start your seam, then stop & lift the presser foot. Of course, you are in control of the buttons & the speed so it is comfortable for your use. Another plus is this machine is not very heavy like my other ones. I also use a serger which is a bit heavier than my sewing machine. This is a real help if you suffer from motor problems like I do. The price is very good for a computerized machine that does so much. Great buy!

Advanced features simple enough for a 10-yr-old to use
I bought this machine after researching beginner to intermediate level machines. Since receiving the machine last week, my 10-year-old daughter has figured out how to wind the bobbin and sew both basic and decorative stitches. She even figured out how to embroider names and phrases into fabric. The presser feet are simple to interchange and the diagrams are easy to follow. With my aging eyes, I especially appreciate the little lever/mechanism that assists in threading the needle! My daughter loves the variable speeds and the option to use pedal-free sewing! The only thing we don't like about it is that the bobbins are taller than the ones we used for our previous Singer machines, so we'll have to replace all of our bobbins. But other than that, we've really enjoyed the Brother sewing machine.

Singer just lost a long time customer....LOVE this machine.
See my Singer Curvy review. I bought two this month, neither worked, and I returned them. At a loss since I've only ever owned Singers, I took a chance on this machine. It was a little cheaper than the Curvy and had lots more features, but I was thinking Brother was a substandard brand as compared to the formerly dependable Singer. Boy was I wrong! I love this machine. I've tested it for three days of heavy sewing and it's still working! Even better: It's light, but feels more "solid" than my Singers. It doesn't "jiggle" as much. It's quiet and quick. Threading is easy, bobbin winding and insertion is a breeze. It has some great features, and I love the "needle down" programming (but you can change that if you don't like it. A few cons: --The needle threader is awkward to use. Singer's is much better. With this Brother, It's easier to just thread by hand. --The light is not very bright and it is positioned such that if you are threading or changing the needle, your hand blocks the light. (I turned a desk lamp toward the machine.) --It is difficult to see the 1/4 seam guide (I'm a quilter) and you can't place a magnet guide for that purpose without blocking the presser foot. (I'll mark it with some tape, I guess). --The power cord falls out of the machine easily, just with machine vibration. Annoying. The Pros (did I mention that I love this machine?): --Quick, smooth, quiet --Tight, neat stitches --Extension table (which I thought was useless but have found it very useful) --Easy, smooth bobbin winding; quick bobbin install. --Easy threading (by hand) --Stitch chart right on front of machine--this is VERY handy. --Very easy to change length and width of stitches. --Option for needle up or down stop position. --Sewing speed control (slow is great for thick corners to avoid needle breakage). --Feed dog retract for freehand quilting. --Priced at $190.00, so inexpensive machine but packed with features. And that's just the highlights. I've found a new home with Brother. I'm going to look at some of their higher end machines since this one is so impressive. Anyway, buy it, it's good. Goodbye, Singer. I'm sure my great-grandmother will forgive me under the circumstances.

Love this machine
Love this machine! It bastes without bunching sews perfect and it is easy to use. I am 64 years old and been making clothes and household items since my twenties. I have a Brother serger also. It was a bit of a challenge to figure out but I use it all the time and it's a great machine too I added a picture of the some of the embroidery stitches that I tested. Amazon had this machine as a black Friday deal so I bought one as a very nice Xmas gift. The machine has not given me any problems or frustrations unlike other sewing machines I've owned.

Great upgrade from a simple, starter machine.
I love love love this sewing machine. It is fantastic! My simple, introductory Singer was not consistent, so I decided to go on a hunt for a better replacement. I did a lot of research and found this Brother machine on sale. I don't do a lot (or any) quilting, but I liked the computerized screen and the large variety of stitches. I read the manual (Because i'm a dork) and found the machine very easy to use. This was a big upgrade from my former machine, and some things were more difficult to do, but I quickly caught on. For some reason, I broke three needles on my first project. I think that I was setting the stitch width too high and going too fast. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this machine. I hope that it lasts for a long time.

Smooth, great operation
I must have spent 5 hours reading reviews of this machine. I was so worried I would buy something I would regret. I've been using my grandmother's Ulna from the early 1950's for the last 30 years. I love it. It's sturdy, but the bobbin hook is worn out and it slips stitches and tangles at least 3 or 4 times for every hour I use it. I needed something dependable and that could handle everything from quilting to working with outdoor fabrics. I've had it for a week, and have already completed 3 baby quilts and other little baby projects, and a soft case for my Brother HC1850 sewing machine. It is a great machine. I'm older and my sight isn't great, so I love the needle threading. The bobbin winding is quick and doesn't tangle. The machine operation is smooth and fairly quiet. The programming is simple, with many options. It's light. So light! My goodness! After lugging around my very solid metal Elna for years, I cannot get over how light this is! I love the extended sewing table that comes with it. Very handy! I would highly suggest reading the entire manual cover to cover for the best operation of the machine. I can see that many of the negative reviews that I read, could easily have been a result of poor user practices due to not reading the manual. Look, for the price, you could replace this machine every few years and still feel good about it. But it feels like a solidly built, smooth operating machine, and I don't anticipate replacing it for quite a while. It has everything I could anticipate needing. This is one purchase that I am patting myself on the back for making! Go me! Good decision! Great machine!
