Regardless of what some others have said, this is a 'commercial duty' FF cutter. It's cast iron and stainless steel throughout. I haven't seen a scrap of plastic. Will cut potatoes up to about 6" long. With the 1/4" cutter screen it produces a FF similar to McDonalds, with the 3/8" the result is a larger fry more like Wendy's or Burger King's. If you want to attempt to cut sweet potatoes, you should order one with the 1/2" screen or perhaps one of the wedge screens, (remember, the smaller the screen, the more cuts you will be making, and the more force it will take).

After reading many of the reviews, we ordered our cutter with the 1/2" blades. I took a sweet potato, cut it in half, placed the flat side on the pusher side, placed the skinny side on the blades, pushed with some effort.....and VIOLA sweet potato fries! I don't know what the heck these other reviews are talking about that it doesn't cut sweet potatoes, but the picture I uploaded is the proof that it does and does cut them well. Granted I am a strong guy that works out (5'10 200lbs), so I will admit it does take muscle to get sweet potatoes through. Other potatoes are easy breezy. If you're a big guy or you have access to a big guy around the house, this beast of a french fry cutter is The Ticket!

I am very pleased with this cutter. I can have a mountain of potatoes cut up in just a few minutes. The prep that used to take me an hour now takes 10 minutes, including clean up. I definitely recommend this for anyone who eats a lot of fries. Some other thoughts: It does take some force to get the potatoes through. I don't think it's an unreasonable amount, but it's not like cutting butter. There's a bit of an art to it and once you get used to it running potatoes through goes very quickly. It is heavy built and stands up fine to the pressure of shoving through regular potatoes. I don't know that it would work as well for sweet potatoes but I have not tried to say personally. The suction cups are strong and work very well. Almost too well - lightly set the cutter on the counter and it sticks! It is big and awkward to wash. But even with that, the time it saves is well worth it and washing only takes a few minutes. My gripes on the cutter are simply a function of it being a big, commercial cutter. It is designed as it has to be to do it's job. For someone that cuts up a couple potatoes once a month it probably isn't worth it. We do a dozen potatoes or more several times a week. If you just expect those few things going in you will wonder how you got along without it!

I often cook for my family and wanted a quick way to pump out some french fries for my family. It does take a little umph to get started but once in the meat of it, its a breeze. I would recomeend using the next potato to push the initial potato all the way through and so on until you get to your last potato. Cleaning is easy and although the cutter can be a bit difficult to get off the counter with the suction cups, thats what you want the suction cups to do; maintain a stable cutting rig. With patience and a couple of cuss words it comes off the counter well enough. I am really happy with the product and wish I would have bought something like this sooner.

This thing works great. Comes with everything you need. I have not done any wedge fries but have no doubt it will slice great too. It does take some force to cut the potato, but you are cutting it all at once. Speed is the best way to use this I have found. I cut a small flat on the end as they suggest and kind of get it started in the blades, back off a bit and pull fast. If it was mounted on a wall it would be really fast but I can't do that in my kitchen. Wish the pusher snapped in rather than two screws as it would be much easier to clean. I can do five faster than I could slice one. Seems very well made. I have a stone counter and the suction cups really hold well. I usually make 3/8" fries but the 1/2" cutter requires less force and the 1/4" cutter more force. Very happy with this cutter.

I love this machine! I've had it for two years, with intermittent use, and the blades broke. I'm not sure if this is normal wear and tear for this machine, it didn't feel like a lot, but it has been two years, and I do make a lot of sweet potatoes. I am VERY happy that the replacement blades are only $10! That makes the machine really worth it! I thought we'd get more than just two years of intermittent use. It didn't seem like a lot of handling. It is, however, a great machine, especially when comparing to other french fry cutters. My mom just bought a $25 plastic one to uI'm giving this product only four stars because our original - the one this goes to- broke after two years! We LOVE to make sweet potato frys, and broke numerous plastic fry cutters before finding this awesome machine. It works fantastically, except after two years it too bent and the metal replace the parts on this machine about every 2 years. At $10 for the replacent piece, and $60-$80 ( I think it went up since I bought it!) for the machine, yiu are looking at a little while before you get a return on your investment, but if you eat French frys/ sweet potato frys like I do, than it won't take long! A little over a one pound bag of Organic at Safeway is typically around ~$6-7. And even organic sill usually has unwanted additives. The organic sweet potatoes I buy in bulk from Costco, 5 lbs or so, is for approx $7-9. In just a couple of bags of sweet potatos, you'd have earned back your investment and would be starting to save money!

After breaking our second plastic consumer-grade french fry cutter within 3 years, we decided to upgrade to this commercial grade fry cutter. Having worked for both food service and food manufacturing companies, I am familiar with commercial- and industrial-grade cutting equipment, and had used New Star cutters in food manufacturing laboratories and research kitchens for cutting potatoes. As I expected, this cutter is well-constructed, and with such a long handle for leverage, the force required to push a potato through the grid is significantly less than that needed for the smaller consumer cutters. The attachable suction cups grip the countertop firmly, allowing me to place the cutter next to the kitchen sink and eject the cut potatoes directly into the sink. Hint: For best results, fill the sink about 1/4-full with cold water, and add 1/4 tsp of citric acid (available in the canning section at the grocery store). This will keep the fries from turning grey or orange caused by enzymes activated on the cut surfaces of the potatoes, even after removing the cut potatoes from the water. My family especially likes the variety of cutting heads shipped with this combination package, allowing three different sizes of french fries and two sizes of potato wedges, also popular with my family. The cutter is a bit pricier than consumer models, but for us the improved ease and durability are well worth the cost. We are using this cutter once or twice per week. The only thing that I would like to see different in this design would be the ability to remove the pusher grid plate without needing a Phillips screwdriver; however, this is only a small inconvenience. Since the cutting blade plates are already removable without tools, it would be nice (and consistent from a product design standpoint) to have both plates removable without tools. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this New Star cutter for anyone who likes to make home-made fried potatoes.

We ordered this French fry cutter because we love French fries. We figured that this would be a great way to save some money on store-bought fries. The cutter works very well. The only problem is that larger potatoes are a little bit of a challenge for those of us with limited upper arm strength. It was easy to assemble. All we had to do was attach the lever with two bolts and put the four suction cup feet on. That was a snap. The cutter is commercial grade and it feels that way. It has the heft you would expect from devices in grandma’s kitchen from back in the day when products were built to last. We give the French Fry Cutter all five stars. We think you will, too.

Since our family loves homemade fries and makes them a lot; I was looking for a fry cutter that was a little better than the plastic hand held ones that take a lot of strength and effort but just don't work well with potatoes. I got this and I am very satisfied with it. It is a professional restaurant grade cutter, very sturdy. There were no instructions but it was pretty obvious how the thing is put together; maybe took 2-5 minutes to unbox, figure it out and put it all together. The components are all held together with bolts, wing nuts and Philips screws. The plunger and cutter can be unscrewed and removed for clean up. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the plunger when you want to clean it but that's it, all the other parts can be finger tightened together. The suction feet do grip well with most surfaces; I used it on granite countertop surface and it sticks well. I use a butter knife to slide under the feet to dislodge and when I want to move it. I am an ordinary guy and had no problems running potatoes through it. It does take a little effort but I found it works best to push the top of cutter in the opposite direction with one hand as I pull forward with the arm with the other. It cuts the potatoes real easy. The only con with this is the dimensions and you need a space to put it away when you done. It is approximately 16 inches long by 8 inches wide by 14 inches tall, all put together with the arm attached; that's a lot to space you need to store it! You could remove the arm and feet when your done to reduce the height but that could be a hassle. Glad I got the 3/8" inch square size; perfect size for fries (not shoe string, not steak size but just the right size). Anyway if you love to make your own fries and make a lot of them then this is great. If you only want fries occasionally then maybe the cheapo plastic handle ones would be best for you.

I bought this New Star Commercial Grade French Fry Cutter for my fiance who is the French Fry King. He loves this French Fry Cutter with all the cutting choices! It cuts each potato with ease and no waste of the potato. For years he cut potatoes into french fries using a big knife and cutting board taking a lot of effort and time (and some cutting accidents too). Wow, what a difference! Less time and effort and safer, making more time to eat and time with the family! Win-win situation!!
