My scoby arrived in tact, appeard healthy, and the packaging was sealed and clean. It came with about a cup of liquid as promised, and I was able to keep it in the bag a few days before I got my supplies to start my first batch. It also came with a paper attached with a recipe for a quart of Kombucha but I am following a different one I found online that suggests brewing 12 bags of black tea in 1 gallon of water combined with 6 cups of white cane sugar in a glass vessel, covering that with 2 coffee filters held in place with a rubber band, and allowing it to sit undisturbed in a warm dark place for 7-10 days for the first fermentation. Then, bottling and adding juice, herbs, etc. to the bottles to flavor, and allowing that to ferment a second time for 1-3 days. I do not have any prior experience with making Kombucha but I’ll update my post when I try it. Thanks(:

Got it on SATURDAY since it was shipped USPS and installed it in a dispenser for continuous brew on Sunday. Since it was only 1x small, I used the recipe for 1/2 gallon. Set it up on Sunday and used a seedling mat wrapped around the jug to keep the temp at about 80 degrees. Today (Wednesday) I've already got a skin of SCOBY forming on top and the flavor is starting to change. Fresh kombucha in a week or so! UPdate: My first half gallon was done in a week. It grew a full size (2.5 gallon dispenser) baby. From my first half gallon I took 16 oz to try a second ferment and filled the dispenser with 2 more gallons of sweet tea. It's been a few days and I've got another big SCOBY on top and the tea is getting less sweet. The 16 oz 2nd ferment (with cranberry juice concentrate) is about ready and it's getting a tiny SCOBY on top too. Very active SCOBYs. Lovely soft flavor from gunpowder green tea.

I was a little skeptical of buy a SCOBY on Amazon, especially one that has been stored in a big warehouse where who knows what the conditions are. BUT I have prime and wanted it quickly so I gave it a shot. It arrived quickly and was packaged in solid white packaging with starter tea. The SCOBY I received was quite small in diameter (approximately 3.5") and decently thick. I added the SCOBY to my cooled tea and it sank right to the bottom. It was pretty flat when I received it and the edges have since curled up to create more of a "U" shape. I'm currently on day 7 of my first brew with it. I chose to brew a gallon. The smell seems to be perfect and I can start to taste the fermentation of the Kombucha. As of day 6 I started to notice the stringy film on top and it looks like a baby is forming. I wasn't too sure of the results I would achieve with this, but so far I'm quite pleased. With any luck I won't need to order another, but if I do I would have no problem ordering this same Scoby from ScobyKombucha again.1 X Organic Kombucha Scoby - Live Culture by Scoby Kombucha

I received my SCOBY within a few days. It was well packaged and included two small pieces and about 1/2 cup of starter tea. Being new to the process, I tried to make a gallon in a two-gallon container my first time out. After 10 days, it still wasn't done. I did a little research and decided to start over with a smaller batch (half gallon jars but about a quart of tea). Since I had 2 separate SCOBYs, I did an experiment where I left one on my counter placed in a dark corner, blanketed in a towel and the other was placed in a cabinet next to an outer wall and my dishwasher (heat sources). Both had the top covered with a coffee filter and a rubber band. Results: the one on the counter developed mold (I'm certain it was mold as it was a white, dry powdery substance that smelled like bread mold) and the one in the cabinet tripled in size and was very healthy! Whoop whoop!! Worked like a charm. In the meantime, the two-gallon container with the tea from the first attempt sat on my counter with the lid closed - completely forgotten. When I finally decided to deal with it, I realized a new SCOBY had formed on the top and the tea was delicious! I had officially produced my first SCOBY baby! That SCOBY is now about an inch thick! I guess the point is was a lesson in patience and a watched SCOBY doesn't grow - without a lot of patience! I am attaching a picture of my "buch-ment" closet where I now keep all of my kombucha, kimchi, and sauerkraut projects. I have the original 2-gallon contain, a half-gallon green tea kombucha, a half-gallon SCOBY hotel (only 2 guest at the moment), and two quart-size jars that are on their second fermentation with blueberry tea in one and pomegranate tea in the other! And it was all born from two thin little baby SCOBYs I received from this purchase!

This thing is amazing. I've had it for about 3 weeks, and I'm brewing kombucha so fast I have to give it away to keep up! The quality and taste is amazing, and the scoby just a keeps performing like a champ. Came in wonderfully secure packaging, with enough starter fluid to brew your own fermented tea. Easy to use, easy to care for, and lots of delicious and healthy tea for as long as you want to keep your scoby alive. You can see how my scoby keeps growing bigger each brew. The smallest one on top is the original one, with the latest being about the size of my dinner plate. They will grow as big as the container you keep it in, so keep that in mind. I highly recommend purchasing this guy if you're interested in brewing your own kombucha.

I have no kombucha brewing experience. I've drank kombucha only 3x before realizing this is something you could make on your own. I read a few articles on how to home brew kombucha and it seemed easy enough...I had all of the ingredients except the scoby. I hopped on Amazon and found this seller. I ordered the scoby and it arrived in 2 days as expected. The scoby was in a sealed plastic pouch with some kombucha vinegar. I followed a simple kombucha recipe found online (black tea, sugar, kombucha starter, and scoby). Attached are some picture of what my batch looks like after 4 days. So far the scoby I purchased is doing the job! Very happy with my purchase and anticipate I will have a delicious batch of 'booch' in 4-5 more days.

This was a great starter! When you order this, the company emails you a list of clear instructions. You should have enough time from when you place your order to until it arrives to have all your materials ready. But I didn't because I was busy. So I had to store it in a plastic container in my fridge for a little while. But once I had my gallon jar, white sugar, tea bags, and vinegar I was set and it made a great first batch! Yes, what they mail you is a tiny and thin little scoby, but given a few days that proud mama births a big baby. I've been brewing from this original culture for 3 MONTHS now and I find myself having to get rid of both the original and a few of the older generations in my gallon jar. Give it a chance! At first I was very scared and worried about not having ph test strips or how to test for mold. But after google imaging pictures of mold, I know what to look for and have become a relaxed pro when it comes to brewing. Now I boil about 3 quarts (a pot) of tap water (I live in NYC where the tap is pretty good) and keep it rapidly boiling for about 5 mins to boil out the fluoride or whatever makes people not want to use regular tap water. Then I add about a cup of sugar and 7 tea bags. I pour out 3 quarters of my kombucha and store it in glass containers in the fridge. Repeat every 3 days. Considering that a store bought bottle of kombucha costs about $5, this culture was an amazing investment! Some of these negative reviews scared me at first too but I feel so awesome that I made a great batch on my own.

This starter works great. It arrived quickly through Amazon prime. Measure how much starter you receive. I received one cup which is enough to brew 1/2 gallon of kombucha. After my first fermentation, I saved 2 cups of starter from it so I could ferment 1 gallon of kombucha. There was info on Amazon which said it was 1/2 cup starter. So definitely measure how much you receive so as to get proportions right for fermentation. If you need more info about proportions to use, you can join a Facebook kombucha group like Kombucha Nation. Lots of helpful people. For in depth info I also recommend "The Big Book of Kombucha".

Pros: fast shipping, culture arrived alive and is suitable for making many batches of kombucha, light in weight Cons: needs occasional cleaning, proper care (sugar for it to feed on & good tea), and a big jar for fermentation A few months ago, after hearing all of the health-food craze about Kombucha and purchasing a few ready-made drinks from the store, I decided to buy my own culture so that I can ferment my own probiotic drinks for less than in store and with the ingredients that I wanted. Upon arrival, the culture worked as promised. To get the process started, traditionally you should heat water until it's warm and dissolve a few cups of sugar in it, as well as a few tea packages for flavor. This will be the food for the Kombucha. Submerge the mushroom in this water and leave for a few days. After this, take any bottles, or mason jars that you may have and bottle the drink. It can last around 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator before you enjoy it. Overall, it was as described and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable option to get the benefits that Kombucha has to offer. Got my anemic little scoby in the mail, it was thin and small, floated to the bottom of the jar of cooled tea instantly. I live in a big drafty old farmhouse so not a lot of heat here. I put it in an upstairs room close to the heating vent, put a coffee filter over it secured with a rubber band and covered it with a towel to keep it in the dark. Kept checking on scoby and noticed a film at the top of the jar but not much else. After a couple of days, it floated to the top and joined the snot party that by now was already going on. I checked it every couple of days and noticed lots of "snot" on the top of the tea. Lost tea due to evaporation so that I had about 3/4 of a jar of tea instead of a full gallon. On day 11, I took the mother out and my "baby" which was HUGE because it had more area to grow in due to all the tea that had evaporated ( the jar gets more narrow as it gets to the top) and was 4 times the size of the mother. It was 5 1/2 inches in diameter and 3/4 of an inch wide at it's thickest point. The mother did not grow together with the baby, it remained separate. The tea was tart and fizzy and even my picky husband had to admit he liked it. I got mine from poseymom and paid 15.60 for it, I didn't get it as cheaply as they are going for now. I had to cut the giant scoby into 4 pieces to start new tea batches and it was a surprise to me that it was not so easy to cut, I thought it would be a gelatinous goo but it was a thick, rubbery membrane that took work to cut through with the scissors. I am very pleased with the new scoby and the tea that both came from that skinny little mother. Good things DO come in small packages!
