This thing has quite literally changed my life. Upon opening the box, I was a little disappointed at the size and build for some reason, but don't let that bring you down at first. Keep in mind it just sits in one spot for extended periods of time, in my case it hasn't moved for months. So size and build quality shouldn't be high on the requirements. I keep it on the opposite side of my bedroom, and at first figured it would sound too "fake" or "emulated", but it honestly nsounds EXACTLY like a fan is on in the room. I use the White Noise sound 90% of the time, but I also like to use the Rain themed sound as well. It makes things very calm and tranquil. I've since been telling everyone about this, super cheap and helps me fall asleep almost immediately.

We have been using this item for 5 years now, and it is brilliant. It has been in our son's room on the rain setting to support his sleep. We have travelled loads with it during this time (be aware, use batteries if in another country, do not plug in or you will fry the machine). We have just re-bought another for our new baby and have also bought this as a gift for a friend who is expecting. All of the sound options are great, and there is only one tiny light on the machine (easily covered with a band aid) if darkness is important to you. Babies need constant white noise to aid sleep, not just 45 mins as provided by sleep sheep etc.

Best thing is ever bought for night time and nap time for the kids! It works great and the sounds are so soothing. I leave it on form 8pm until 8am every day and I have not had a problem with it at all. There is a timer though if you want to set it which is also nice. I give this product 5 stars!!!!

My husband bought me this for Christmas one year because I was freezing him in the winter by sleeping with a fan on. So I tried it instead of freezing him out and I love it! When we travel I take it with me. Our 18 month old knows that sound means it's time to go to sleep and he'll go turn it on. So we bought one for his room, too, lol. I love this "noise maker". I seriously don't know how I slept without it before. If you're like me and need just a little noise to sleep better and it's too cold for a fan or you don't have one, this really works.

A year and a half later, it runs all night long, blotting out street and neighbor noises. There is a choice of six different sounds. We favor the seashore sound (crashing waves) or just plain gray noise. Chirping crickets and croaking frogs don't help us much. If I could control the choices, I would add just a simple sine wave version of gray noise - some variation up and down, but more regular than the crashing waves. I tend to go to bed a little earlier than my dear spouse, who then tends to sleep later, so all in all, this little unit runs at least 12 hours per night, every night - longer if we forget to turn it off the next morning. I guess the design is somewhat limited by the need to have a speaker, but it does take up a bit of space on our nightstand. Location of the cord makes standing it on an edge close to impossible. All in all, a dependable unit - which wouldn't be good for anyone with infants or small children.

I bought one of these to put on my desk at work to help drown out some of the background noise in my shared office. I think I can safely say this has been the best $20 I've spent in a very long time. I use the "white noise" setting at work and it's just the perfect little bit of sound to cut out the noise from other people (chatting, typing, etc). I can even turn it up louder if someone is being especially obnoxious. It has insulated me from a lot of the annoying noise that previously drove me up the wall. I'm planning on buying another one to use at home for sleeping since I really like the "rain" and "thunder" sounds. I use the AC adapter and this little speaker runs a solid 9-10 hours a day, 5 days a week. I have been using it for well over six months without any problems whatsoever. I even left it on accidentally one weekend and came in Monday to it quietly shooshing away on my desk. I have recommended them to several coworkers and they all love theirs too. Fantastic little product.

I'm one of those people who is very sensitive to unwanted noise. It's a curse I've had since a child. I have a sound machine of some kind in almost every room. I used to use fans but those would get kind of cool in the winter! I even went to a sporting goods store in desperation to block out loud barking and bass music sounds and tried earmuffs for gun ranges! But the guy there told me you couldn't block deep sounds so low in the spectrum because you weren't hearing them with your ears, but with your body. I bought this sound machine to replace an older model of the same kind for when I travel, especially internationally, because it can operate on batteries. My other unit has lasted years and is still running, but the battery section no longer works. This new unit sounds as good as my old one. I like white noise the best because it has the most even, non-invasive tone. I don't like that it now has a knob you have to turn on and off as opposed to a push button, but I can live with it. It would also be great if it had a headphone jack but I have my iPad white noise for that. As for these sound machines blocking dogs barking or music or loud talking and my latest nemesis, the motorcycle across the street, I haven't found anything that could do that. But these lessen the irritation of softer noises or even too much silence when you are trying to work and want to increase concentration.

Much cheaper and more versatile than those other sound machines. The rain setting makes the room feel so cozy and helps blend over the sounds of rude neighbors who like to rev up their motorcycles every morning at 6:30 am before burning rubber down the street. I don't use it on a high enough volume to actually cover the sounds of said rude neighbor, but at a medium volume, it's enough to allow me to sleep through the neighborhood sounds. It also helps cover the sounds of late night fireworks and bass on any random night of the year people seem to think is a night for boisterous celebration so you can fall asleep without having to wait for them to all finally pass out. My partner was initially skeptical, but now he likes it as much as I do. He slept in very late one day off because he said he kept waking up and thinking it was rainy outside, and now he always wants to use it.

I've used a Brookstone white noise machine for almost thirty years and my third one, just died on me. I received my Homedics white noise machine, today and have to say that I'm thrilled. The sound is really great, it's lightweight for travel, and it can run all night long without the timer set. I am really happy with this purchase as to the price and quality. Our Granddaughter has used one for several years and it has held up quite well. After reading some negative reviews, I purchased anyway, because I think they are rare, and Amazon has a reasonable return policy, so you're not stuck, if you're not pleased with the product.

This is just to update reveiws since the lates one was several years ago. My family has used a sleep machine every night for years and have one in every bedroom of the house as well as in our children's homes. We first bought the Hammacher Schlemmer version, which runs like an old locomotive, but are a bit big for traveling. This machine is the second HoMedics version for us. I bought the first one in 2013 to take on the road when traveling. We now have one at home and one for me to pack for trips. There are a number of settings, though we prefer the waterfall as it is more constant and sounds more like wind. From 2013 until about 6 months ago I used the first one some 3-4 nights on the road, but have run it every night as a second sound machine in an adjoining room without a single problem. I would recommend this model for anyone who travels and, for us, it has held up to the test of time.
