I believe the many squirrels that live in my back yard can read and thus know of this product. They are really smart and have outwitted or destroyed all previous birdfeeders. When I had finished loading the Brome 1057 with sunflower seeds (the birds and the squirrels favorite) about four of the little critters massed on the closest branches and studied it carefully, you could tell they were chatting excitedly in squirrel..and then they just left....for other parts of the yard...they seemed very dejected...they didn't even try...and two month later don't even give it a look. The birds love it. The best designed product of its kind on the market.

I just ordered my 2nd one of these because it's fantastic! I have cardinals, nuthatches, and finches who regularly visit my feeder and the squirrel who used to eat all the food is no longer successful. It's fun to watch the little bugger get frustrated and just drop off of the feeder - the birds actually wait just off to the side until the squirrel drops to the ground, then they come right back to continue eating. I have another feeder right next to this one, but the birds almost never use that one, which is why I'm getting a second one of these. Best feeder ever!

This "squirrel proof" feeder just survived a bear! That's a strong bird feeder.

I'm telling you the combination of this bird feeder and the clear plastic dome is 100% squirrel proof in my set up. I've watched squirrels climb up the post and try to reach over, reach down and they can't get to it. It's a miracle! *Not sure the feeder without the dome would be as successful, but it still would keep most away. They are so discouraged, they don't even try anymore. I'm going to purchase the larger version soon.

After being tormented by squirrels for months and trying various baffles and such tactics, I am proud to say we have found the solution. I was originally looking to get the brome plus model but because of the location of our feeder the plus was too big. This one is working perfectly and the birds love it. My only negative, as previous poster stated, is the small amount of feed, but seeing that I had to fill my previous feeder daily for the squirrels to eat, it is of little concern. Great product.

One squirrel conquered this feeder, but only briefly. When he tried again, he couldn't seem to remember how to do it. See the picture--it's a bit hard to see, but he's hanging upside-down from the rod the feeder hangs on, and somehow he was able reach the feeder and pull it toward him. I think if it were hanging from a straight rod, he wouldn't have succeeded. I've had this for over a year, and I've seen many squirrels try to get the food, but this is the only time I've seen one succeed. As someone else said, it's fun to watch them try. As for the feeder itself, it's great. Easy to fill and all kinds of birds use it, including larger ones, contrary to what someone else posted. We get a lot of cardinals, though we don't have bluejays around this area, so I don't know if they'd use it.

This review is for Brome 1057 Squirrel Buster Standard feeder. This is a very well made, substantial feeder. It took the birds a couple days to discover and visit it, but now there's quite a crowd at feeding times every day. The squirrels (we have tons of them in the yard) so far have not been able to even get to the feeder. I hung it from a tree branch on a 3' long length of steel picture hanging wire (4 strands twisted together), so it hangs about 5' above the ground. Even if they did get down to the roof, the smoothly operating mechanism would snap the seed supply shut immediately. The first day, a squirrel was at the top of the wire trying to figure out how to get on the feeder roof, but didn't have any luck. He couldn't climb down the wire. Now they mostly just look at it, and sit on the ground underneath at feeding time and pick up what the birds knock down. Drawing on what another reviewer wrote, I also modified the perch by using copper wire to fasten two pieces of dowel to the perches to make more room for the birds to perch. This is our first-ever bird feeder. I would definitely buy it again, it works great for a reasonable price. We are really enjoying watching the large variety of birds that visit. (See the pictures for the hanging method and perch modification.) Update after 6 weeks: A squirrel finally managed to get on the feeder, but it worked as designed and he didn't get anything, was just being a nuisance so I scared him away. Haven't seen him back since then!

I originally purchased a Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder of another brand and after having it up for several days, nobody showed up, neither birds nor squirrels. It was in the same spot where the feeder it replaced had been occupied throughout the day (by birds and squirrels). I returned it and was promptly issued a refund (Hoorah for Amazon-Prime!). I ordered my new Broome and in less than an hour I got the first of many subsequent bird visitations. The first squirrel (two of them) showed up on the third day and after many attempts to get at the food, they gave up and angrily shook their clenched paws at me and departed. I’ll wait a couple more days, as our North Carolina squirrels tend to stick to it, to see if they can find a way to defeat it. Since my purchase I have had many squirrel visitations, and as always, it ends up with them shaking their clench paws at me and running off. So I just ordered a second 1057 for the front of my house as the squirrels have figured out how to get around the overhead hood by dropping off the hood and catching the lower perch of the feeder on the way down and having a feast while I shake my clench fists at them. Great design and I thoroughly recommend it.
