Pretty quick and strong
Pretty quick and strong. It does need a level, flush connected track to run smoothly though. When we set our track up in the playroom on top of the carpet, the engine would stop each time it met a joint in the track that wasn't smooth and level. When we corrected those joints, this engine was rocking and rolling. The sound effects are a big hit with my boys.

Pulls 8 cars easily with great train sounds!
This train pulls 8 wooden cars easily up a bridge. The whistle is very nice. The chuff is also very nice and the back up Bell is perfect. I bought this for my 2.5 year old grandson. His Grandpa builds and puts lights and sound in HO model trains. It is so much fun to watch them both enjoy their trains together. It is not difficult for me to change the battery as I own a set of small Phillips head screwdrivers.

Finally a automatic train that works up hills
This train works awesome! Finally a train that goes up the hills and over the bumps and ridges of our wooden train set. My boys would get frustrated with the trains we have bought getting stuck and falling off or not able to make it up the hills. They were thrilled with this one. One thing I will say is it seems to eat through batteries. I have to be hypervigilant to make sure it's turned off all the way.

It’s strong and durable.
It’s strong. Just make sure to turn it all the way off or you’ll be changing the battery often. You can see in the picture it’s pulling 8 varing sized cars. When it’s a fresh battery it can pull more at a good pace.

Strong locomotive
I have also a single AA battery locomotive from Brio, this one (2 * AAA) is much stronger and can pull a lot more cars. Due to its big size it tends to derail more easily than shorter locomotives, a tendency that's even worse on the reverse gear. The ability to disconnect the motor (which allows for free wheels movement) is simply brilliant - in my experience, toddlers are always happy to push trains, and this single feature allows for continuous fun, even long after the battery is dead. BTW, battery life is very good.

Grandson's delight.
When we took down our Xmas tree and its surrounding Lionel train set, we broke the heart of our 18-month-old grandson. Until, that is, I bought this to pull his Brio trains around their wooden tracks. He's in love with it. It works best on flat track and doesn't always handle esses with ease, but it can manage a bridge if there aren't many cars in tow and the AAA batteries are reasonably fresh.

Mighty Action Locomotive Indeed!!!
Great Engine for my two little rail barons!!! We got the Red colored one not knowing it also comes in green but no matter, the boys take turns and it pulls great, rolls steady along almost any configuration of wooden track they create (and, we have all sorts of track pieces from many different manufacturers.) Lights and sounds add a lot of fun and have even gotten to boys to work together in the dark to see what's happening! Only thing we haven't really figured out is what is the strange big-bear sound it makes going forward (we're sure it's supposed to be a train noise just like all the rest this engine makes but it sure sounds strange ;-)

great train
We bought this about 2 years ago. It has been a durable little train with 3 and 5 year old boys. It is compatible with the wooden tracks and it goes on the hardwood floors. We have changed the battery a few times but it still works. Its hard to make a toy that stands up to the abuse of small children but this one has been a good one. It has good power to chug up "hills". Great sounds. Really good toy.
