My first spotting scope and I love it. I saved hundreds of dollars by getting the "old" model, with the course and fine focus knobs. I'd be curious to try the helical focus ring on the new model, but I can't imagine it being worth the extra money. The clarity of the glass is top notch. I've used my friend's Swarovski scope, and I cannot see paying that price when this scope is available. I don't know why I waited so long to make the investment in my birding.

I bought this scope for the range and for hunting. It's clear and works well enough in low light conditions (did not do a whole lot of really low light testing). It's good enough to make out the rigging on a sailboat that's at least 15 miles away and we could clearly see goats on the top of a mountain that was probably five or more miles away. We did a comparison with an older Bushnell scope of the same power range and a bigger, 60 power Leitz. The Vortex holds its own against these scopes in terms of clarity and ease of use. In fact, the owner of the Leitz commented that Vortex makes an excellent product for the price point. Friends recently bought a Leitz for twice the price of the Vortex but I'm not sure they're getting a materially better scope.

I originally had my heart set on a Swarovski; but did not have the bucks. Saw this at the Cornell Ornithological Lab in Ithica so I investigated it on-line and was impressed with the variety of positive responses. So here is mine. My Audubon group just had a fund raiser silent auction with a 20-60X60 Swarovski and the 20-60x85 Vortex is as good or better. I am thrilled that I got the Vortex - even if it were the same price; but it was half the price. Also the Vortex tripod is simple and very sturdy - better than the more-than-twice-as-expensive Manfrotto that was packaged with the above Swarovski. I would give this combination 10 stars if possible.

I've used this spotting scope for two full seasons now in Arizona. It is awesome! You really can pick out deer a long ways off. The built in sunshade is really nice and easily deployed if you start getting some reflection. Everything about this scope has made me happy. It's clear, easy to use and built tough. Yeah sure, a spotting scope that costs three times as much is a little more clear but what else would you expect? This one works for me, I'm very happy and I think you would be too.

Really for the money this can't be beat for mid-range spotters. It's super clear with either the stock eye piece or the wide angle 23x power optional lens. I like the body that is coated with a textured paint that feels solid with thick rubber inlays for grip. To me this is hardier than the rubberized Pentax method of weatherizing. The 65mm model still retains the adjustable/lockable tripod base whereas the 50mm mini model has a fixed base. This model also allows Vortex eyepieces but the 50mm model won't. Also this one has the pull out sun shade. Focus is nice on both versions. It's made in China but high quality with a great warranty. This is quality though with great colour in all light conditions. I feel this 65mm lens does the work of the major league players but is portable and balanced for actual field use. An 80mm scope is very large by its nature but without amazing optics inside the advantage won't play out. Pay little mind that this one 'only' goes to 48x. 60x is very difficult to manage, and needs optimal conditions to be of any use. Remember the higher the power the less eye relief there is (eyeglass wearers take note). This zoom lens did not give me much grief at full power if that helps.

Very nice scope. Excellent clarity, even when zoomed to and around maximum magnification. Holds its own against the big name brands, with a more affordable price tag. This is nothing against the scope, but Amazon gets a rare thumbs down on packaging. My scope came together with my Vortex tripod in the same box. The box was enormous with tons of extra room, and instead of the usually good packaging material and large bubble wrap, there was a single piece of brown paper separating the two items. The only purpose that this piece of paper served was wasting a piece of paper. On the other hand, I also ordered a fitted case for the scope which came separately, and this was wrapped like it was a Faberge egg. If it were me doing the packing, I would have more firmly secured the box containing the $1000+ worth of optical equipment...vs the fitted case, which could likely be run over by a car and still come out fine. Luckily the scope itself is very well packed by Vortex, so this likely helped protect it in transit.

Been to the range with this multiple times. Spotting at everywhere from 100 yards to 1200 yards. This scope, and the auxiliary MIL reticle eyepiece, work extremely well. It even allows one to read wind from mirage, while still seeing the target, in many conditions. Excellent. Highly recommended.

We got this last week and took it to the National Bison Range to try it out. It was great. My wife and daughter loved it so much, I couldn't get close to it. We watched a bear on a ridge over a half mile away, and it brought it right in. We were watching big horn sheep at about 150 yards and my daughter (11) commented on the color of their eyes and the shape of their pupils. This was a great buy.

Ok, so I do not hunt. My brother in law hunts. And he has been yammering on about this scope forever. So finally I bought it for him. Like I said I do not hunt so to me I do not get why anyone would need this piece of equipment. But once it arrived he showed me what it does and how to use it. Mind you I have nothing to compare it to but I will say, if you are looking for game far off, this thing is awesome. I felt like I could reach out and touch one. I was impressed and I don't even use it. The problem is that all the other guys in the family want one now too.

My 325 yd. range is private, narrow and shaded. I started with a $140 scope because the reviews and specs were good. Maybe some people can see 223 holes at 250+ yards, but I couldn't. So I bought this 20-60x85 Vortex Razor. The resolution was a little better, but not enough, I'm sorry to say. My eyes aren't perfect, but even with my prescription glasses, I couldn't see 223 at 250 yards. 308 on splatter targets were OK, but not good enough to distinguish holes close together. I called Vortex for advice and experienced their superior service. And their honesty. Kowa or Swarovski were my better options, or a target camera system. I looked into a target camera and was amazed to find that the camera can only be 2 to 3 feet from the target. I'm a good shot, but the light triggers on my 223 and 308 go a little early at times, so a camera a few feet from the target seems like a bad idea. I may yet try it. So I'm moving up to a premium scope. No fault of Vortex, and I still rate the scope a 5, but I thought my review about clarity at 250 yds. would be helpful to someone.
