After recently doing extensive research on the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (see below), I decided to add chia seeds to my vegan diet because these seeds are an abundant source of omega-3 fatty acids. There is another big plus for chia seeds as well: One ounce (28 grams) contains 7 grams of fiber and 4.7 grams of protein! Because of that fact, due to consuming chia seeds, I have been able to reduce how much vegan protein powder I add to my smoothie each day. In fact, I am planning to slowly begin increasing the amount of chia seeds I consume each day and reduce my use of expensive protein powder even more. There are multiple vendors of organic chia seeds available in the marketplace, but Healthworks is a brand I have successfully used before for other organic food products, so I chose them. I am very pleased with these chia seeds. They are fresh and delicious. It’s crucial to realize when adding chia seeds to one’s diet that, if one tries to eat them whole, unfortunately, they will simply pass through the body, undigested. To prevent that problem, I use my blender to process them in order to achieve maximum digestive absorption of the chia seeds. If I am going to put them in hot cereal or use them as an egg substitute, I blend them into a powder. If I am going to use them in my morning green smoothie, I blend them into a paste first. This is how I do that (see attached photos): I put 1 ounce (28 grams) of these seeds in the blender with at least 1/2 cup of water or herbal tea. I blend on high until the chia seeds are a thick paste. At that point I add in my fruits, vegetables, powdered nutraceuticals and additional liquid. INFORMATION ABOUT OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS There are three main types of omega-3 fatty acids whose health benefits have been well researched. These include DHA, EPA and ALA: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are called marine omega-3 fatty acids, because they are found, fully bioavailable, in fatty fish and certain algae, most especially the algae, Schizochytrium. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in plant sources such as green leafy vegetables, soybeans, walnuts, and seeds such as chia, flax, and hemp, with flaxseeds containing the highest amount. It is important to note that, in order to obtain omega-3 health benefits from these sources, the body must first convert the ALA into EPA and DHA, and this conversion process is inefficient in humans. On average, only 1-10% of ALA is converted into EPA, and only 1-5% into DHA. The amount of the conversion is also impacted by the availability in the body of adequate amounts of the following nutrients: B6, B7, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, and iron, which most vegans and vegetarians probably already supplement in their diet (especially B vitamins). Note that the U.S Institute of Medicine recommends a daily ALA intake of 1600 mg. per day for men and 1100 mg. per day for women. It is difficult to obtain remotely enough ALA simply from leafy greens because, for example, 1 cup of raw spinach only has 40 mg. of ALA, and 1 cup of raw kale only has a little more ALA at 120 mg. But If a vegan or vegetarian is willing to add the following seeds and nuts to their diet on a regular basis (I have added all of these to my diet), it is easily possible to obtain an adequate dose of EPA and DHA from the diet alone: One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides 4,915 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 49-490 mg. of EPA and 49-245 mg DHA. One ounce (28 grams) of flaxseeds contains 6,388 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 64-640 mg. of EPA and 64-320 mg DHA. One ounce (28 grams) of hemp seeds contains 6,000 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 60-600 mg. of EPA and 60-300 mg DHA. One ounce (28 grams) of walnuts contains 2,542 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 25-254 mg. of EPA and 25-127 mg DHA. HEALTH BENEFITS Research has indicated that the most health benefits are obtained from omega-3 supplements, or the above food sources, which offer a combination of EPA and DHA. Some of these benefits include: 1. Anti-inflammatory. Research indicates that omega-3 can help reduce inflammation. This is very important because, over the course of many decades, an abundance of scientific research has indicated that inflammation is either the direct cause or a major contributing factor in virtually all disease, including especially: cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disorders such as arthritis. 2. Prevents heart disease and stroke. Research indicates that omega-3 can help reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and increase blood flow by improving the ability of blood vessels to dilate normally. 3. Improved eye health. Research indicates that omega-3 can help reduce the incidence of dry eyes, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. 4. Improved brain function. Research indicates that omega-3 can help improve mental clarity and lower the risk of dementia.

3 kids later my nails became frail paper thin and always breaking off..since I use these in my protein breakfast shake everyday my nails have rapidly grown and they're really strong & pretty. I can physically see three nutrients I've been missing. Also it fills me up and hills me over until I get a break at my job to have something to eat so great for maintaining your weight as well. I didn't notice this with other brand chia seeds so I put this one on subscribe and save.

My 68 years old aunt has been taken 2 teaspoon of chia daily for a year. She began with a blood pressure of 140/90, now she has 120/80 and has lost some weight too. She doesn't take any medications, but is using little salt, eating good fat, some fruit, a lot of vegetables, very little organic meat and chicken, Alaskan salmon and trying to exercise at least 15 minutes a day. And she feels wonderfully. Now she only takes chia 3-4 times a week. Also my husband has began to take chia too and we notice that is helping him little by little but for better results we know we have to wait some time.

Excellent experience all around. I emailed them before I purchased to ask the difference between the Organic and the No Pesticide varieties. They were quick to respond and answered my question satisfactorily. When I received my order, packaging was standard Amazon packaging (in a box with big air balloons). Chia package was fully intact. I couldn't wait to try making chia gel! The ratio I've heard is 1:9 parts water so I tried that. It was looser than I wanted, so I now use about a 1:8 ratio with great results. The chia tastes great (for chia which doesn't really have a lot of flavor). Tastes fresh, and the texture is good. I love my new breakfast alternative!! How I use it: I make a 32 oz mason jar of chia gel and keep it in the fridge. Works great. My recipe is: a half cup chia gel, 4 oz. Tempt hemp milk shaken with one scoop of Amazing Grass Green Superfood powder. That's the base. Then I add pumpkin seeds or freshly grated coconut meat. Super healthy and delicious. I would order from Healthworks again. I'm happy with the product and the customer service, too. The price was excellent as well.

This is good chia seed. i have had many different brands. most of the brands all pretty much have the same product- some seeds might be larger or smaller at times no matter what brand it was, and the seeds come from different places (Australia or Mexico). it really never made a difference in the quality of the seeds as far as I'm concerned. no brand really identifies or labels every single vitamin and mineral with it's quantity of their product, so how do you really know which is best or not. people are complaining about getting rocks in there seeds, but that's typical of all brands: And you can't get this stuff wet or anything, so when you're processing this stuff i would think that you would have to be as careful as possible and have as minimal processing or cleansing of the product in general...no? To me this is the the best chia seed so far- how not?- you get this much for the price. David Wolfe is charging $27 for a 2 lb bag of his chia seed. i purchased 6 lbs of Health Works for $26 and its Organic just like David Wolfe' brand. I have not seen the nutritional analysis of any brands so i will continue to purchase Health Works chia seeds. Thank you Health Works for this chia seed at such an amazing price. i will continue to purchase this product.

I was referred this to help boost nutrition in my special needs son (the healthy foods he will eat is minimal). I didn't know what to expect, since it was our first time trying chia seeds. Surprisingly, these are really easy to eat - almost kinda fun. They have relatively no flavor, so you can add them to literally any food. It gives it a nice little crunch. My favorite is to sprinkle it on top of white rice. The two food textures compliment each other, and it doesn't come off as feeling awkward in your mouth. You get a lot of seeds in this bag, enough to last many, many meals. It's a great value. Since taking these seeds, I do feel as though I have more energy, and also my overall mood is better. Very happy with this product and will continue to use it.

I purchased this product on the recommendation of a friend who uses them. I like the fact that they are organic and can easily add fiber to just about anything. I add them to my yogurt as a snack during the day at work. It gives you that full feeling and a little bit goes a long ways. I've been using this product for several weeks and like it. Whenever I add them to my yogurt, I give it like 5 min. before I start eating it as it gives the chia seeds time to absorb some water/moisture before eating them. I like to let them soften up a little bit first. I also add these to my protein shakes I have as well. I would recommend and plan on continuing including these in my diet.

Our household regularly adds chia seeds to breakfast, snacks, and smoothies, so we go through quite a bit in a month. We've ordered these several times and have never had a bad batch or any reason to complain, and they are now a regular part of our subscribe and save order. We mix them with coconut milk and/or oats for breakfast, sprinkle them over oatmeal, bake them into granola bars, and blend them into smoothies. They're great for adding dietary fiber and B vitamins to your diet.

Awesome option for a vegan keto diet. No net carbs, organic, large bag. I’m definitely happy. The little seeds have some kind of static effect which makes it messy as some are always singing outside of the bag and scoop I use. I’m guessing this is from the plastic. Other than that, I am sold. Finding a larger bag at least cuts down on packaging from having to buy three bags of other brands for the same quantity.

Good price (especially with prime) and quality, although Costco often carries different brand a little bit cheaper (same 3 lb bag). These are excellent source of fiber, Omega fatty acid and significant protein. No surgar and all carbs are fiber. Content is approximately1/3 fiber, 1/3 protien, and 1/3 fat (Omega fatty acids, NO saturated or trans fat). Often mix with low surgar greek yogurt, but (as with any source of soluable fiber) make sure to use with, or follow up with, plenty of water. The seeds absorb a lot of water proving the benefit of the fiber. Three pound bag goes a long way. There are about 110 servings in a 3 lb bag. I use about 4 servings a day, so one bag lasts about a month. Good product at good price with great health benefits. 5 stars.
