Microwave skills are growing...
Took me a couple of tries with this steamer, but I finally figured out how to use my microwave oven to make good basmati brown rice -- one of my goals for the year. I'm very happy about this. I have a couple of other Sistema steamer trays and they have worked well in the microwave, so I decided to branch out with this rice steamer. I'm glad I did. It's a good addition to my microwave cookware and is helping me branch out and use my microwave for more than rewarming a half-finished cup of coffee! By the way, it does make a difference how the insert just under the lid is placed on the steamer. There is a 'hump' in the middle of the insert that goes up (not down). Also, offset the slits in the insert so that they are not directly under the slits in the lid.

Easy to use, easy to clean
I've had this for 7 months now, and I think it's still my favorite tool in my entire kitchen. I eat a ton of rice, and I love how easy this is to use and how easy it is to clean. I put in one cup of white rice and two cups of water, and microwave it for 15 minutes. It comes out consistent every time. In the past, I've cooked rice on the stove and used an electronic rice cooker, and I prefer this microwave one to both. I hated how messy cooking on the stove is, and my electric cooker got mold down inside the part that you can't wash. With this, there's no mess, and there's nowhere you can't clean or that can trap mold or bacteria. I can throw every part of it into the dishwasher after I'm done with it. It's awesome! I wish I'd had this back in college.

Simple and effective
I've had this for about 4 months now but was hesitate to try it. Silly me! The thing is GREAT and a favorite cooking tool. I'm at about 2,300 ft above sea level so timing does vary from others. I use the 2:1 ratio (water to rice). I rinse the white rice 3-4 times, then put cooking water in, seal, microwave 15 mins, wait 3 more, pop the top off and presto, perfect fluffy rice 100% of the time. Unfortunately, our son got the ratio reversed and now we're waiting for rice steamer #2 to arrive. House still has a tinge of burnt rice smell to it 2 days later. Don't get those ratios mixed up!! Buy this product, you honestly won't be sorry (unless you burn the crap out of it).....

Multiple uses, saves space, saves a few minues when cooking rice
I bought this more for soups, but it works really well for a rice cooker. It saves about 5 min from cooking rice in a pan so don't consider it much of a time saver. But the rice is done just right every time, at least it has been for me. So now I have a multipurpose container, I can microwave up a can of soup or even a box of mac and cheese. The instructions for rice are clear and easy to follow. I have several Sistema products. They have held up to camping, school lunch bags, and heavy use. I expect the same from this. The only drawback in the front label on mine does not seem to want to come off even after a good soaking in water with dish soap. Still, this is the least of my worries. Eventually it will wear off.

Great !
This product is pretty great! ... my girlfriend was a little curious about it, and ordered it... did not expect it to work as well as it does. 20 minutes makes you perfect rice in the microwave (she's used it twice so far)... make sure you DO NOT!! Again DO NOT!! Add any oil or butter, otherwise, like other reviewers, it will melt in your microwave. If you follow that simple direction, you will get perfect rice every time.

Very pleased with this.
This rice steamer works great, is easy to use. I ordered it because my old microwave rice steamer was old and lost the gasket. This one has no gasket to lose. However my favorite thing about this one is the ease that the inside lid can be removed. My old unit I had use a fork inserted into one of the openings to pry it up. This one just lifts up, easy. It's also surprisingly easy to clean, doesn't need to be scrubbed like the old one. The only thing I would like is a sealing lid (both lids have slots to allow venting). A sealing lid would allow me to use it to store left over soup (which it also works great for) with out having to dirty a second container.

It's now one of my favorite kitchenware
I use pots to cook my rice on the stove every time, even-though I have a rice-cooker (the only thing I use from the rice-cooker is the cup, lol) Anyway, over the time now, the rice stick to the pot and it's hard to clean. So been looking for a good small rice cooker. The price is good to give it a try. First use I am instantly sold! The "splatter-free" lid that comes with is also good for draining water from the rice after each wash (thou, there will be some rice spilling. (still better than when I have used in the past, my hands to block the rice from the pot when draining.)) I am not sure how most people measure their cooking, I use those rice cooker cup so I say instruction should comes with "unit of measurement" (which is what is in the instruction page) and "old school " way, of how many cups of rice to how many cups of water.

Awesome rice steamer
We've had this rice steamer for 5 mos. Other than my first attempt, every batch has been outstanding. We like Chinese & steamed veggies/broiled chicken with the rice. I even made a hot sauce shrimp to go with it (see photo) I've seen the reviews showing the product melting, cooking rice to a solid mass... I don't know what they're doing to get their results. I follow the guide that came with the steamer. I start with the least amount of time shown. I open the bowl & stir the rice with the paddle then I add another 2 mins. Open, check, stir & put it back in for another minute or 2 if the water hasn't fully absorbed. I also found that washing the rice made a huge difference in how the rice cooked. There are plenty of wash bowls on Amazon. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this product. We'll never have instant rice again.

Rice cooker. This works good.
Hello again, back with another review. The spag shoebox looking thing I reviewed last time was great and this rice cooker thing is also great. I can eat for less than a dollar a day with these two things. Add in some meat juice or some sort of liquid flavoring, and you have a great meal on a budget. And, to round it out and make sure you get all your nutrients, get some flintstone vits. Ya got fiber, stuff that packs your belly, vits and all for under a buck a day. Mmm Mmm cheap eating.

Favorite kitchen gadget ever
I recently bought this—despite having a very expensive 20-year-old Zojirushi rice cooker that is fantastic—because I loved the notion, for everyday use, of having rice ready in ten minutes. I love this rice cooker. This is absolutely my favorite kitchen gadget I have ever bought. Ever. And it is only $15. It takes some experimentation to get the water/rice ratio right for your microwave (the instructions given made the rice slightly soupy for me), but once you figure out the proportions, it makes rice just as well as the Zojirushi. And it's ready in ten minutes! You can also use it to steam any veggie, and it works great for that too. I highly, highly recommend this and wanted to share my enthusiasm.
