Works great for kombucha! I replaced the spigot with a stainless steel one as the original has small flecks of the silver paint on the inside. Take note that the spigot is higher up which is good that you aren't getting all the yeast from the bottom but you also have to tilt it to get the last few cups out. You can see in the picture I have about 4 cups of starter/SCOBY and it is below the spigot completely (I'm giving it a rest right now)

Bought these to brew kombucha, and took the recommendation to upgrade the spigots to stainless from the plastic ones. One thing I did different was to use the original silicone washer, instead of the replacement ones because the old one is like a grommet, and completely prevents the metal spigot from contacting the glass.

I use this lovely jar for brewing Kombucha (though I replaced the plastic spigot with a stainless steel one, and I rubber band a kitchen towel over the top). I bought 2 for wedding gifts--I gave them each with a decorative plant stand to elevate it off the counter, so you can get a cup under the spigot.

There are two things that I might note as negatives: you do have to replace the spigot with a steel version, and I wish it came in a larger size. But, seeing as how you're not really buying the spigot, but the carafe, and adding the cost of the spigot still makes this American made dispenser better bang-for-your-buck than the imported ones, I can't ding them too much for that. As for the second issue, I can't ding them for that, either, as that's a personal preference. I would like to see a 3 gal version become available, though. All told, this is a very solid piece of tempered glass. It's easy to handle, move, refill, and clean. One mark that glassware is well made when it has minimal waves and warps. This has almost no distortions, which is a sign of how even the firing process was that gave this a perfect round diameter with even walls throughout, with a wall closing in on 1/2" thick. I think even hard use would find you hard pressed to chip this glass.

Got this to make kombucha. I hate that the spout is plastic so I bought the stainless steel Oakleaf brand that other reviewers mentioned and it fits great and works great. This jug feels sturdy and will likely last forever as long I’m careful washing it. I bought this so that I could use it for continuous brew kombucha rather than using the batch method with containers without a spout. It’s much easier not to need to clean the container between batches. I’m sure at some point I’ll need to take the SCOBYs out and clean it real well, but I’m happy not to need to do it every time. This is a lot taller than I expected (2 gallons is big) and would not fit in my refrigerator but I keep it on my counter top so it’s not a problem. It is nice to have a large capacity so I’m ok with the size. I keep a dish towel over it instead of the lid so that my kombucha can breathe. The lid seems fairly well made though and maybe I will some day use this at a party to serve sangria! Then I’ll have a use for the actual lid!

I use this to brew kombucha, though I did change out the spigot for one rated for kombucha (the one you get is cheap with silver paint). The glass is thick and the neck has a nice dent to take a stretchy hairband and hold the dish towel in place. I'm doing continuous brew so the height of the spigot is fine since I'm going to leave 1/3 of the liquid to start my next batch. It's nice to be able to see what's going on inside.

I make a lot of sun tea all year long, (living in Texas) and this two gallon jar is perfect. It sits on the top shelf of my refrigerator and only takes up half the shelf. I replaced the plastic spout with a stainless steel spout. There is no leakage and the spout shuts tight. I make the tea in a one gallon tea jug and pour the finished tea into this jar. Yes, it's heavy to lift once full but not that heavy. The lid fits well in spite of not having a rubber washer. The weight of the lid keeps it seated. If you make a lot of cold tea, or cold coffee or lemonade, or juices, this is the jar for you.

I use this item for brewing kombucha. Reason I like it is Because of the large opening at top where lid is, it’s easy to pull out the Scobie When It gets too big and also easy to pour in the new tea for a fresh batch also drains well into bottles from bottom Spigot. As shown in the photo, I replace the spigot to a better quality one.

Great product. A little bulky and I opted to set the jars on the table and then fill them rather than trying to carry them already filled. The spout did leak but I think it was because I didn't tighten it properly. I did, however, change the plastic spout to a metal one after my event was over.

Latest review (2018): Well folks it's 2018 and after three cross country moves and four apartments later I'm happy to say this dispenser is holding up like a champ. I am just now reading other reviews about replacing the spigot. I'm interested in that upgrade but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've had this now five years and works great. I hope I didn't just jinx myself. Another reviewer said the spigot is too high, which I agree it does get a little annoying to tilt it to get the last three Mason jars worth of water out. Thankfully it isn't too heavy. For what it's worth, I've only used reverse osmosis water in this. I bought a smaller version of this to make kombucha and it did great for that too. 2014 review: A year later and this still works great. The spigot has yet to leak and I've had zero issues with it and use it daily. Highly recommend.
