The yarn guide needs to be pulled out hard enough to lock it in place. When I first used the winder, I thought I pulled out the yarn guide to lock it but it kept on moving which took too much effort to wind my first ball of yarn. I wanted to return the winder but gave the winder another chance and really pulled the yarn guide like I want to detached it and it finally locked. When winding you need to hold the yarn and pull at it so there is some tension for smooth winding. I can't stop using this. I just want to buy more yarn so I can wind it up.

Spending an hour winding a hank of yarn with a nostepinne is not my cup of tea, so I decided to spring for a ball winder. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, and decided to go with this model. Yes, the yarn guide wants to fall constantly, but I yanked it HARD, and it has stayed in place through multiple hanks of yarn now. The main problem I had with this winder was attaching it to a table. My dining room table has rounded beveled edges, and it wanted to tilt at a 45 degree angle. I had to use one hand to hold it down, one hand to put tension on the yarn, and one hand to wind.....wait, that's one more hands than I have. Yeah, problem. So, you need a squared edge. My bathroom counter was the only squared place I could find. That's fine, but then this little winder kept sliding and twisting, because the counter was too slick. Rubber shelf liner to the rescue! Got a roll of the stuff for about $5, cut a 5" square to put under the winder, around the edge, and below, and now my winder holds steady and secure. Works like a dream! I'm going to try using a plastic lid from cottage cheese or something, cutting a hole in the center, and using that to make the base a little bigger (saw that in another review.) You do need to hold the yarn with one hand to apply a little tension (not a lot, or it will wind very tightly, and you'll lose the spring in your yarn after it sits like that for a while). If you don't apply tension, the yarn will want to wrap all over where it shouldn't, and make a mess.

I love this little yarn winder! This yarn winder works as well if not better than big expensive yarn winders. It turns yarn into a nice compact "cake" that is easy to store and you can pull your yarn from either the outside or the inside of the cake. I have even used this to wind an entire skein of blanket yarn with no problem.

I was worried about buying a cheap, low end winder, but decided to try it out. I have had no problems with this winder. I have wound several balls of yarn/thread with ease. It has worked well and winds fast (as fast as you want to turn the crank). The metal thread holder locks in place by pulling it straight out. I also realized I needed to use my fingers for TENSION. Otherwise the ball was much too loose winding without any tension. Clamps nicely to the corner of a table or desk. I love it! And love that I didn't have to spend a lot on it.

Great little gadget. So much less stress winding yarn, and sooooo much quicker! NOTE: make sure you pull the metal spiral arm all the way out so it locks in place. So many people complaining about the arm, when all they have to do is pull harder to lock it in place. If I didn't read the other reviewers, I would have made the same mistake too since you can't really see where/how it locks in. Just pull it straight out until it clicks and/or locks in place. Also, as for how much yarn can be wound.. some people are saying it can only wind 50g of worsted yarn. I definitely had over 100g on mine, so not sure what's going on there. I think you just have to keep a little less tension on the yarn to keep it from slipping across the top as the ball gets larger. It also helps to keep a finger or two on the locking arm to keep it from "wobbling" a bit, which makes the yarn slip from position. My personal experience with winding yarn by hand has always been a hassle and a horror for me. Even after I got the ball wound, it ALWAYS ended up getting tangled while I was crocheting! I just couldn't hand-wind a center-pull ball without it getting severely tangled (especially at the beginning and end). This thing has just saved me from selling/throwing out all my yarn and needles and never crocheting again! I'm glad, because I really enjoy it, but the hassle of hand-winding and then to get tangles after it anyway was just more trouble than it was worth. NOT with this little gadget! I'm so excited! I wound up like 3 or 4 skeins of yarn in the same amount of time it would have taken me to wind up 1 by hand! Money well spent! UPDATE (6-months after original purchase). I still use this handy little gizmo. It's not perfect, but it's still working. Sometimes no matter how slow I wind the crank and use my little trick by holding the crank arm steady, the yarn will slip off the top of the ball at a certain point. Even when I start all over from the beginning it still slips right around the same point. However, I notice that if you just let it slip and continue on, it doesn't mess things up very much. It continues on just fine. I've been looking into purchasing a better manufactured one but they're a lot more expensive. With that said, this one isn't so bad considering.

I love this. I have older cats that become kittens when they find yarn. This product has helped me recover yarn that I previously would have discarded due to tangles and snarls. If you have arthritis and still love to knit and crochet. This is a fantastic tool. If it made larger balls it would be beyond perfect. A larger spindle would be great. The fact that you can pull the yarn out from the center (no rolling around) is it's best feature.

my wife cant get enough of this thing she swears its therapeutic we have more yarn than I can explain as she is a huge knitter and crocheter. she wants to get one for her mom and sister, package was a little sketchy but the item was OK so overall shes happy Im happy also very solid design it seems like it will last for a long time so for the price point its a win.

This yarn swift makes quick work of making my skeins of yarn into balls. I've had no issues with it, it's super easy to use and a reasonable price too. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to start crocheting or knitting with yarns that don't come in easy pull balls or skeins.

This is a great solution to all those floppy, loose remnants of skeins that are too much yarn to toss, but not enough to store with the other skeins without getting all tangled up. This winds it into a tight little "yarn cake" and you can fold up the paper wrapper and put it in the middle when you remove it from the ball winder.

This yarn winder is really good for taking those store bought skeins and winding them into usable balls. Every time I use a skein of yarn from the store, I get knots and a tangled mess. If you take the time to rewind your yarn, it will save you a lot of time on your projects. I love the way it winds the yarn smoothly and it really keeps you organized too. I wound about 50 skeins. The package arrived earlier than expected and was well packaged too.
