I have used pellet grills for many years, and of course, Traeger was one of the first to come out. I have gone through 3 Traegers over the years, literally wore them out and really had no complaint other than sometimes not a lot of smoke, and sometimes no smoke. The customer service people seemed to be annoyed when you asked for help, P - Settings, etc. My last Treager, #4, was/is a lemon. It happens to all manufacturers, not complaining, just my luck. Major problems with the igniter and control board, but my hardware store is always accommodating; however, after the 4th time in I started researching. I settled on this grill because of the reviews and the convenience of dumping the ashes and being able to easily change the pellets. I ordered it here from Amazon and it came in as advertised. This is not a toy. It is well made and HEAVY. Most importantly, IT SMOKES. Right from the start it smoked like a chief and still does. The thermostat is really easy to use and it cleans like a dream. I have tried many different types of pellets. All of them work -- from Traeger and Wal Mart to Tractor Supply. After many years I can honestly say that this is the best pellet grill that I have owned and the price is right. Top quality and most importantly it works.

This review is one on two different grills: YOU may be looking at a Traeger unit as well as this one so PLEASE read on. I give details about both this grill and the TERRIBLE service and experience with Traeger. It's worth the read and if you have questions please reply and ask. i'll be happy to try and answer. I get email on my phone and answer fairly quickly. --------------------- Traeger and Camp Chef review as posted elsewhere --------------------------------- Traeger may be the first pellet grill butit's an outdated design that makes this unit an also ran. I bought one only to find that it does not hold temps well. In fact, they claim "set it and forget it" but that is FAR from the truth. My unit would run for an hour or two then go nuts and drive the temp to 350 or much higher. I burned everything I tried to cook for three days and one time the pellet hopper (holder) caught fire. While Traeger has generally good reviews I must WARN that many are likely from the pre-China manufacturing era and that as with all things the last few pennies are cut to make an extra few bucks. This is Traeger. Also, I have to add that calling Traeger's support and customer service number yielded not much more than an insinuation that the user is doing something wrong. The fact that the unit runs for a period of time at or near a set temp then goes "crazy" and runs 110% 400+ degrees means nothing to them. Change the "p" setting is the fix. That is a button you press using a paperclip or some other thin wire to change the setting on the auger. It seems that Traeger's digital controller is merely a timer of sorts. You set a needed temperature and it merely runs the auger, feeding pellets for XX seconds then it stops for XX seconds. Changing the "p" setting changes how often that auger/feed runs thus keeping the fire running. As outdoor temperatures change YOU WILL BE changing those settings again. It has to be "perfectly" timed. There are 9 different settings if I recall correctly. It's a try and see proposition. If one works during the spring it likely will not during the summer. Winter? That is a whole different setting as well. Get it right and as long as the unit doesn't defect and feed fuel too much and you will not burn and ruin your food. That brings me back to then support crew. The unit should NOT go nuts. It should hold near some set temp. Clearly mine in my mind was defective. Traeger? They said as long as it runs it cannot be defective. I must have run it out of pellets or did something incorrectly. I did not run out of pellets and "set it and forget it" shouldn't mean play with "p" settings, rub the Genie bottle, Pray to the pellet grill Gods in hopes that the unit actually does what it is advertised to do. Fast forward to today. I purchased and received a Camp Chef DLX PG24 pellet grill. Unboxed it, followed the super simple directions to put the legs, side shelf, and handle on, then run the initial "burn in" or startup procedure. Did that and then decided to play with all the different settings. The Camp Chef does wonders on the two smoke settings. Traeger says NOT to use the smoke setting unless you are in ZERO degree weather. The Camp Chef held consistent temps on all of its settings all the way to 400 degrees. At their wide open setting I got a little over 500 degrees. Their pellet hopper holds much more that the Traeger and it appears to funnel the pellets to the auger better - that means you won't have to refill the hopper as often. With the Traeger half full will mean it may run out as it isn't great at funneling those pellets to the feed auger. Camp Chef does much better I am happy to say. The Camp Chef appears to be slightly better built - as far as the thickness of the metal and its overall appearance compared to the Traeger. It is undoubtedly the better buy. Keep in mind too that Traeger uses the same auger timing technology on all of their units so each and every one is likely to work the same as mine --- OK to poorly. OK, if you are still with me you are wondering just why 4 stars and not 5? Well, my CampChef was damaged. The box did not show signs of damage but internally it was. I had to straighten out some of the metal using a hammer. Their support so far has been excellent and the unit works as it should. I just don't think a $600+ grill should be anything short of excellent condition. They want to make it right. We will see what that means. Until then it is 4 stars. *********** Edit 5-17-2015 I have upgraded, Yes, upgraded my review to 5 stars. I have used this thing so much that I recently ordered 360Lbs of pellets and expect to use these up the nest 9-12 months. Got a god deal on them. Back to the review. I decided this smoker was all I could have asked for. It just works and customer service and support have been top notch. I had a temperature probe go bad, likely dut to mishandling, and they sent me a replacement no questions asked. They addressed the "damage" by offering me a cover. I have also acquired the front shelf which I think is a MUST HAVE item. I just cannot say anything more or better about this and the company that stands behind it.

I am a little concerned as upon my first time using this grill I was unable to get the temps up to the instructed 350 degree burn in. I did let it burn in at the max temp it would go to which was 200 degrees for an hour. I had already committed to the smoking of a prime rib so I set the grill to high smoke and in my amazement it went to 225 degrees and cooked for 3 hours at that temp, for the second part of the cook it requires to set the grill to 400 degrees I did this and the grill would not heat up past 186 to 195 degrees. A little upset as this is not what I was hoping I would get with this product. I have emailed Camp Chef and will update this review upon the return communication and results of the issue. Camp Chef PG24 Pellet Grill and Smoker BBQ with Digital Controls and Stainless Temp Probe UPDATE: I called Camp Chef and spoke with Julie, what an experience she was knowledgeable of the product and did not treat me as if the problem was my fault. She quickly diagnosed the issue by asking me questions about the operation of the grill. She told me it could be a problem with either the thermal coupler or the control panel, of course in my head the "Here we go swapping parts out one at a time shipping stuff back and forth until we find out the actual problem. Great no use of the grill for a while". How wrong that thought was, she said she would send me a new control panel and thermal coupler out right away, she sent me the instructions in an email and they were exceptional including color pictures. Due to the holiday slowness of mail I didn't get it til the Tuesday after Christmas, I swapped out the parts as per the instructions, straight forward swap out. Turned on the grill and ran thru the temps perfectly. I can not be happier with the grill so far, and as far as Camp Chef's support goes it is top of the line they treat you as human, they don't talk down to you and their ultimate goal is to get you running and happily cooking. Recommend this product and product support is top notch. Thanks again Julie@ CampChef UPDATE-- Well almost 2 years owning this smoker and let me tell you the cooking we have done. Honestly we use the smoker/grill more than the stove and oven in the house. So I started having an issue after a cook I would turn it to shutdown and instead it would power cycle and go into startup mode again. I emailed support and they promptly replied we discussed in an email or 2 at the most the issues, and even being out of warranty they told me they are shipping me a new controller and would like me to send them back the old one so they can diagnose the problem in hopes to prevent the issue from continuing in the product. Now honestly you don't hear that every day a company wants to investigate one of their parts to perfect their system. Most of the time it is sorry your out of warranty replacement is $XX.XX. Camp Chef is awesome they have been there when I needed them and they are really top shelf support and engineering. They replaced the controller for free and the only thing they requested was the old one so they could see why it is doing what it is doing so they can improve their product even more. Whatever you do Camp Chef do not change your dedication to your customers. Thank you

I was getting ready to host a bunch of people for Memorial Day for a BBQ. I have an ancient Barbecues Galore Grand Turbo gas grill and a Jumbo Joe charcoal grill. I wanted to do a brisket and neither of those contraptions were going to do it right. I started looking into pellet grills. I liked the Green Mountain grills models but couldn't find one and couldn't get one here in time. Then I stumbled on a review of the Camp Chef on the Amazing Ribs website and they gave it their highest rating. The icing on the cake was finding it on Amazon for a couple hundred off the list price with 2 day shipping to boot. Sold! Then they shipped it UPS. I have a long history of things from UPS showing up looking like they drop kicked it all the way across the country so I had high anxiety for two days. Miraculously, it showed up in perfect condition. Not so much as a rip in the box. Assembly was a snap. My brisket was nothing short of awesome, as good as any I've ever eaten. I'm starting my second year with this smoker. I've smoked fish, ribs, brisket, yard bird, you name it. It has never missed a beat. I have a Maverick remote thermometer that I know is accurate and the thermometer on this grill is very close. People complaining about smoke leaking out of the lid. Who cares? The smoke has already passed over your meat and would just go out of the chimney anyway. I plan to wear this grill out (no sign of that yet) and then upgrade to a MAK but I am perfectly happy with this grill at the moment.

This just came today. It was packed very well and had no signs of damage. It is very easy to set up and if I had one complaint it would be that the legs aren't very tight in the leg receivers and they move back and forth a bit. Other than that, it comes with a warming grill (a piece that I would have had to order separately on the Treager), a sensor and an instruction book. The hardest part of assembly was putting the stack on by myself. No other review or video on Youtube will tell you if it fits a turkey. I just happened to have a 20# frozen turkey and it fits great. I could actually put two of them in there side by side. I would venture to say that a 25 # turkey (thawed) would probably fit also. This is big enough for all MY needs!

Technically, I'm a 60 year old woman, but I liked the word play. Wanted to describe for you how easy it was to put together. My total time was 75 minutes, which included the unpacking (about 20 minutes just for that). I carefully opened the box, and cut down the sides so that if required, could use the cardboard as resting materials for the grill. Worst case, if it doesn't work, I have to tape it all back up again. By the way - it is required - because you have to tip the grill onto its back to attach the legs. You don't find this out until you break into it all and read the directions. Everything was carefully wrapped. Caution - the stainless steel heat diffuser and drip tray are fairly well oiled, so take care unwrapping (and clean them with several sprays of 409 - otherwise you likely will get burnt oil when you fire up) . Don't know for sure, because I have to go get some pellets. The directions are pretty clear with pictures and WORDS! Provides details on exactly what size bolts to use, clearly shows where they are to be placed. Mind you, these aren't just bolts, but ones with lock washers too. Rest assured this isn't going anywhere. All you need for assembly is a phillips head screwdriver and crescent wrench to attach the smoke stack, and phillips for the handle and attaching the side table.. Comes with a nice allen wrench to put the legs on. The hardest thing to assemble is the handle. For that, two people might be better, but I still managed just fine (maybe an extra 5 minutes) by myself. Everything was very well made. Heavy duty materials, solidly finished, side table attaches with 5 bolts (normally you are lucky to see 3). Honestly, the quality on this grill is better than that of my gas grill, which cost more than $1000. I did buy the cover - have to keep my new toy nicely protected. It fits like a champ. Once I get my pellets and fire her up, will amend this review to let you know how well she works. Truly looking forward to it. UPDATE: Cooked with the grill twice. Pretty easy to use, just follow the directions. There are also a couple of nice YouTube videos on this unit you can watch. Can't wait to try out the various pellets to change smoking flavors. Working with a beef brisket today and using the temperature probe (per the directions that came with the grill). Did only a small brisket, since didn't want to have to want to wait 12 hours for the entire cook and rest procedure. So far, so good. As it was starting, threw a piece of salmon on the grill with Montreal Steak Seasoning and some dried dill mix, little olive oil Let her go for about 45 min (since was cooking at 250 degrees), checked it with separate meat thermometer...taste test = YUM. Then threw on a few chicken legs, let them go about 1.5 hrs (remember, cooking at low temp for the brisket). put a light glaze of BBQ sauce on them. Can't wait to try them. Did some brined chicken breasts last weekend - also good, but in boneless meats, watch the heat setting or they will dry out sooner than you expect. Unlike standard grills, you don't have flames, so you aren't going to get the sear you may be used to. This is more of a smoker... As a side note, saw a couple of Traegers in the store, and let me tell you, my Camp Chef is made a lot better - sturdier assembly all around, heavy duty construction, so don't be enticed by the deals at Costco. It's worth the wait. Of course, I also have a gas grill as well as a Primo (natural charcoal) grill. Girl can't have too many Grills you know!

Move over Traeger!...Just received my new Camp Chef PG24S from Outdoor Cooking via Amazon. As you can see, I asked a ton of questions before I actually ordered. I will be able to finally clarify ALL of the things that I asked about and got unclear answers. I am very happy to say, this smoker/grill is a game changer. Especially in it's price range. You can easily spend $1400 on a smoker/grill and not get any of the features this wonderful gem has. 1. This is a EXCLUSIVE model built just for Outdoor Cooking. 2. Stainless embossed lid, hopper lid and stack cap. 3. Very sturdy construction...every bit as solid as my Traeger Lil Tex. Limited Edition which also came with the stainless goodies. 4. Built in probe for meat temperature. The badging on the lid is "Smoke Pro". 5. Two of the handiest features that the spendy smoker/grills do not have. The hopper can be emptied of pellets with thru a chute located at the bottom rear. This is activated by a knob that you simply pull. No more dreaded scooping out left over pellets that you want to change out to a different flavor. The second addition is a pellet ash cleanout from the burner. The burnt pellet ash is now dropped into a removable ash cup for disposal! No more vaccuming out the burn pot. You will still have to tend to ash residue in the barrel, but that is normal cleanup anyway. 6. During my initial "burn in" of the smoker, I set it to 350 degrees on the dial. As it reached 348 degrees, it held that temperature for nearly 30 minutes without bouncing! My Traeger would sway up and down 6-8 degrees constantly. I cannot wait to actually put this through the trenches with smoked pork butts, ribs and brisket. So far, I am extremely pleased with my purchase.

Best buy ever 1st came sooner than expected seller got it off fast came box looked like he'll but it's packed well had 1 small issue contacted outdoor cooking. Com next day was all taken care of fast and professional I will always buy from this seller. Now grill was easy to put together, took about 45 minutes counting unboxing . Start up directions were quick and easy for your 1st cure . looks great cooked on it every day since it arrived. One tip is for nomax seal for lid and I got a cheep welding blanket to place on grill to help keep temperature good . Now you don't need to do this works fine on its own , and will keep steady temp but it's cold here and after I did this I used half of the pellets I did the first 2 days. Think of it like insulating your house you don't want the furnace to keep running . Very easy to use literally set it and forget it , this makes lots of smoke .tons of YouTube tips and tricks on pellet cooking . I highly recommend this Camp Chef pg24 grill sold by outdoorcooking.com it will take your outdoor cooking to a whole new level

Thinking about another brand of pellet grill? Is this your first pellet grill? If so STOP! You have likely found the best value and quality for this price range. I had a Traeger that cost me much more $$ and that poor grill was horrible. I won't go into great detail and just say the temperature controller on the Traeger doesn't actually control temperature. It merely is a timer to feed pellets (fuel) into the firepot. If the temperatures outside change then timing gets off. They have what is called a "p" setting that you'll possibly forever be adjusting. It's just old tech that doesn't work well. So why exactly did I say STOP above? Because the CampChef unit is a true set it and forget it pellet grill. You fill the pellet hopper which holds you fuel, turn the dial to smoke or whatever temperature you wish and leave it. Rest assured it will hold the temp you set and the hopper holds at least 15 pounds of pellets. Enough for a very long and slow smoke. I have had my CampChef now for about a year and I have used it at least once a week. I almost forgot what is likely to be THE most important point needing to be made. I left my temperature probe out in the rain and it went bad due to my misuse and abuse. I called CampChef to buy a replacement and they sent one FREE. They even gave me a super deal on a cover due to the only issue I had with my unit. The top of the pellet hopper lid handle leaked water under super hard rain. The cover was their offer to fix the issue. It was ether they repair it or supply the cover. I took the cover, free, and that was better than a repaired lid. Bottom line customer service has gone far and above my expectations. They were willing to make it right or, in my case, better than right.

This is the right choice for anyone that likes smokey flavors and cooking slow at home. It is my first experience with a pellet grill and I have read and studied them for a while. I was looking for a outdoor cooking solution that would give me the ability to cook like the pros without the super sized trailer. Finally deciding to go with the Camp Chef I haven't been disappointed. The temperature control is flawless so you can dial down the cooking process. I smoked chicken the other day and the red smoke ring was a 1/2" deep. It works like a convection oven so there are no cool or hot zones, it just keeps the heat even and consistent. I have noticed even if smoke isn't pouring out the wood flavors are present. It is a unique cooking system and designed to cook slowly. It doesn't get hot enough to sear thin cuts of meat like steaks but it will have a very good smoke flavor. So it's not a solution for all your outdoor cooking needs, but if you like to slow cook it's great. Pro's The hardwood flavor. Temperature control. Large cooking surface will hold two turkeys. Dump tray for easy clean out. Temperature Probe. Power failure restart. Con's Hard to get pellets out of the hopper for storage. (remove the grate or it is impossible) Ashes are blown all over the bottom and must be vacuumed out about every fourth or fifth use. Warming rack is in the way but you can take it out. Not sure I will ever use that. Checking in at six months. Upping it to five stars! Still loving it after cooking about 100 meals. Thru rain, snow, and the occasional nice day it is still going. Today I'm about to grill brats. My weber grill sits around rarely needed so it's going to get sold. I discovered with quality pellets it can grill just fine to temps up to 450. The camp chef grill cover keeps the pellets dry in the hopper so I don't even take them out unless you want to change flavors. I did have to seal the hopper handle around the rivets to keep the rain out but other than that it is very tight. See the pic makes smoke like crazy. Checking in at one year, Still very happy with this purchase. I'm not interested in professional BBQ competitions but my brisket is better than many famous BBQ restaurants I have been to in Missouri, Tennessee and Texas. Thats not just my opinion many of my friends agree and and also have encouraged me to enter some local competitions. This cooker is still the best value for the dollar for pellet grills I have been looking again for a larger rig, but haven't found one better. If you are looking for an entry level pellet grill this is the one you want. Don't be discouraged by the reviews that talk about leaking smoke or not sealing well because it does leak smoke everywhere. Look at the pic I attached to my review you can see it for yourself it does, but isn't it silly to buy a smoker that doesn't smoke. If you ever go to a BBQ competition you will see most of their smokers leak smoke also. I hope this review helps and I can honestly say I am completely satisfied with my purchase and would do it again. Two years and still going. I have used this cooker at least once a week for two years. I recently had a couple of issues with it going out and was thinking it was having a serious issue. Quite frankly as much as I use it it should be worn out by now. Here is what I discovered. Carbon had built up on the tempeture probe and the grill wasn't getting accurate readings. Suspecting the temp probe I checked it with an external one and it was off 50 degrees or more. I am assuming that the readings were off enough that the grill controller just shut it off kind of a fail safe? 30 seconds with steel wool and we are back in business. The old camp chef is heading to a new home. We have been thru thick and thin, rain, or snow, on two ocations high wind blew it off the patio. A few dents bad scratches but it still works like a top. My son is driving in form North Carolina to take it off my hands this weekend it has been replaced by a yoder ys-640. The yoder is bigger and heavier with more btu output if needed. But the camp chef still is easier to clean out and cooks a fine brisket.
