Way beyond my expectations.
First off I would like to say is that yes you can use a hdmi to vga adapter to use this on an old computer monitor and turn it into an hd tv, just make sure you get a decent adapter with an audio out and externally powered is better but not necessary. I used the PWOW® 1080P Mini HDMI Male To VGA RGB Converter Video Adapter With Audio and it works great. Also this works excellently as digital media player and is capable of playing just about any video file I have thrown at it, including flv's. With that said this is not the most user friendly device but well worth the $48 it cost, and it is easy to learn after a bit of playing around with it. It does detect ALL cable channels encrypted and unencrypted but does not differentiate between them so you will have to delete which channels you cannot watch. You also might want to keep this device always on as it is somewhat although not to difficult to recover your setting once it restarts. It does not delete your settings though, it just kinda hides them from you and is pretty hard to explain but easy to figure out. The games are kinda weird but cool, occasionally I will play the old-school tetris and such. This device can also be tweaked by electronics techies for purposes I will not mention here. Normally I would drop down a star because of the nonexistent web support but this device way exceeded my expectations, it is very solidly old school constructed and I am very very happy with it and plan on buying another. BTW WARNING remember to peel off the plastic coating or the device will most definitely overheat.

Excellent low cost Tuner and DVR recorder
The tuner works great with an antenna, with clear reception on high def channels. The digital recorder, which the manufacturer refers to as "PVR", is what really is satisfying. You can pull up upcoming shows by channel, select the show you want to record, and specify f you want to record it once, daily or weekly -- it is that easy. If you want to see what you recorded, you can display the PVR list. I have had the box running for days, and it is only slightly warm to the touch. I'm recording onto USB 2 flash memory, which works well with high def. A one hour high def show can take 4 GBs, where 1 hour at low def takes approximately 1 GB. Another nice feature is that I can download my recordings to my computer (MAC) and review, rename or review each there, then copy these back out to flash card fir viewing on the Viewtv box. This is an excellent functioning and low cost ATSC Tuner, DVR and full function remote; how do they do it for only $39.99? I was so impressed with this unit that I purchased a second one. Update: What the instructions don't tell you: 1. The box only has a USB 2.0. It does not support USB 3.0 2. Press the "info" button once on your remote, and it displays the channel/station info, but you have to press The info button a second time to display the station strength meter. 3. Recorded output is in the form of a .mts file. After approximately 4.29 GB of recording, the ViewTV cuts a new output file under the same name, but with an extension of .mts1, and then .mts2. If needed. 4. On the Mac, the QuickTime player will play a .mts file, albeit occasionally it will hang up. Even though it may hang up on the Mac, it is still usable on the ViewTV. My QuickTime player can't handle a .mts2 file, but again, for large, multi-file videos, I use the ViewTV. Incidentally, you can rename your files on your computer and then download to your USB thumb drive. 5. Finally, I use high speed flash memory cards in a USB 2.0 flash reader. If you use a USB 2.0 Thumb Drive, make sure it is at least 40 Mbps speed in order to record in high definition. I have absolutely no issues at 40 Mbps. 11/03/17 update: it is still worker great for recording OTA content. I’m using SanDisk USB 3.0, 32 and 64 MB thumb drives purchased inexpensively at Amazon. Note: plug the thumb drive into a Samsung TV USB port, and the recorded video contents can be displayed directly and easily on the TV, obviating the need for the ViewTV box for playback.

Good tuner box for free local network shows
This is a very good tuner and recorder (on par with my HomeWorX HW-150PVR tuner box) - it does not pull in as many stations as my iView 3500STBII tuner box though. I have a 64GB USB flash drive connected to it via the USB port which allows me to take my recordings on the road. I don't recommend using platter-based hard drives as they take time to spin up, so you can miss the beginning of programmed recordings - unless of course you set it to record 1 minute earlier. The interface is a little clunky and it does not have the bells and whistles you're accustomed to seeing on TiVo and cable boxes, but you do get an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) - which you can use to look up daily programs for a channel. Select the program you want to record as well as the frequency (once, daily, or weekly) and you're done. None of the brands I mentioned have a standard remote interface, so I have to review the buttons for the other 2 boxes as I don't use them as often, but once you get used to the remote layout, it will become second nature to use. I use an external UHF/VHF rooftop antenna and get 30+ channels in the NYC area - some of them are total rubbish, so I just delete them from my channel listing. The image quality is excellent, so I have no complaints there. The great thing about the portability of the recorded media is that you can export the files to your laptop/desktop and using a video editor, delete commercials and anything else you don't want, and build your own video library of your favorite shows. The best thing about these digital tuner boxes is that you don't have to pay monthly fees - you buy the box and an antenna if you don't have one, and that's the end of the charges: no need to pay for monthly TiVo or cable service to view your local networks. The fact that the box can also be used to freely record local network TV shows is absolutely awesome! One less bill to worry about.

For $30 I don't think you can beat this thing.
I recently purchased a new 4K TV and had a run-in w/ my cable company. I cancelled my cable and picked an HD antenna only to discover that my new 4K TV DOES NOT have a built in turner and input for the antenna! I was like "Are you kidding me??" LOL! I couldn't believe it - so I started to think about the problem and figured there had to be something I could get and pair w/ my HD antenna to get an HDMI output to my TV. Enter Amazon and the ViewTV AT-163. I will add that I just got and setup the unit today but I could not be happier. It works GREAT. I also purchased a 1TB external drive (unpowered, only power thru USB) and was able to record shows immediately to it. The software interface is pretty well done - once you hook up the unit and the antenna to it and turn it on the system does a channel scan. Once that's done you tune to a channel and hit the EPG button on the remote (included!). This screens shows you all the shows the system can get from the channel. You can then pick one and the recording interface comes right up and you can schedule that show to record very easily. It's not perfect - the recording interface doesn't show you what you're recording, just what channel and what time and the frequency (Once, repeating, etc.). Also you can set manual recording times - IE "record channel X from 10am to 1pm" and that works well too. Also the time setting is a bit wonky, you have to tell it not to set the time offset and do that manually. Because I live in a time zone that observes daylight savings time (freaking stupid in this day and age if you ask me) and the clock time was one hour off. Eventually I figured how to tell it to I wanted to manually set the offset and fixed the time issue. Overall for $30 I can't believe this product was delivered to my door and works just great. I did just get it but so far I am WOW'd by how well it solves my problems. I hope this helps!

Read This If You Have HD or Timer Issues
I initially had a few issues with this box, but was eventually able to resolve them. Initially I could only record SD video as HD was very choppy using a USB, but the support team suggested I try formatting the USB in the box. This resolved the issue and my PC still was able to copy the .mts files from the drive. I use Handbrake to convert the .MTS files to .MP4 files so I can watch them on my iPad. The other issue I had was that the daily timer was not working. ViewTV support provided me with a new .bin file which resolved this issue. ViewTV will respond to email queries, you just have to be a bit patient. It sometimes takes a few days for them to respond. Box works great now.

Surprising! Outperformed my expectations- Great to go subscription free, or use to eliminate recording conflicts!

Excellent product, second one I have purchased. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
This is the second that I have purchased. I used the first for an entire year before I noticed the "remove plastic wrap" LOL but it never gave a bit of problem. Love being able to pop in and out Thumbdrives to record HD shows. So I purchased this for the big screen upstairs, and it is actually BETTER, the remote is improved, the channel display is Amber and larger (was dim green) and the power light is visible from a distance (I only saw it when it was red - off). Great delivery, great value. I highly recommend. and you will RARELY see me give a 5 star, and I may regret if I ever need Cust Service.

Works well!
Was forced to buy this device in order to be able to watch local channels on my new giant size overpriced Visio Flat screen TV which doesn't show any local programs. The TV is supposedly a "Video Display monitor", Which comes only loaded with apps like Netflix, Hulu etc. Have to use a tablet if I want to watch YouTube on that monster..What in the world??!! Anyway, back to the product that I'm reviewing. The View TV digital converter box Instantly brought in several local channels plus QVC and HSN as well as ION channels. Also several Telemundo channels, Decades Channel, Laugh TV, and lots of 60's,70's and 80's shows, plus western shows/channels etc etc. The list goes on. Comes with a multifunctional remote that I'm yet to explore..can't record any programs though, Need some other gadget to do so.

Wow! Very impressed with this HDTV Tuner!
Last week I purchased a Vizio P65-C1. I absolutely love the Vizio, but it does not come with an internal tuner. The AT-163 arrived quickly from Amazon, and it fits the bill perfectly. Hooked it up to an HDMI port, powered it on, hit the menu button, and it proceeded to find channels. It even picked up premium movie channels, but they were blacked out. Bummer. Anyway. it took all of five minutes, and I was up and running. High Def (1080i) channels look freakin' amazing! Crystal clear, with no display judder and no lag! Absolutely perfect picture, with just a cheap OTA antenna plugged into the rear input. The screen menu is very easy to use and very intuitive. I was very surprised that the remote even controls the volume on my Rotel 1056 AV Receiver. The front display is bright and easy to view. Wow! I'm very impressed and highly recommend.
