I replaced the front door lock because it's a hassle getting your keys in and out of the pocket all the time. It works really well. There is the lock button that will lock your door without you using your keys. It is operated by battery so if you run out of battery then it won't work. However, you can still use your keys to get inside. I had another lock that didn't have the key option and was locked out before. I just got it so not sure how the battery life is with moderate use.

I am so thrilled to have this lock! No more kids losing or forgetting their keys! No more logistics of getting a key to the pet sitter! If someone needs emergency access when we are not around, we can just give them the code - and then delete or change it later. I just received this lockset and installed it. I was installing it in a door that already had a deadbolt, which I removed, so the holes were already drilled. (If you are installing it into a new door, there is a drilling template.) I worked carefully, but this was one of the easiest installations of any products that I've purchased in recent memory! Everything went smoothly and worked as it should on the first try. The only tool that I needed was a Phillips head screwdriver. A few key tips: The box included two instruction booklets - one in English and one in Spanish. Or at least the first and last pages of the one booklet were in English - the middle two pages were in Spanish on both papers! This was a problem for me, as I unfortunately do not speak Spanish. Luckily, you can go to the Kwikset website and download the complete instructions in English. Other reviews, and the installation instructions, said that there would be one screw that required an enclosed Allen wrench. My box did not appear to include that screw or that wrench, so all of the screws that I used had Phillips heads (which was more convenient). You can set a Master Code so that only the person who knows the Master Code can add or delete lock codes (the Master Code will not unlock the door). The instructions that came in the box did not include instructions on how to do this, but you can download the Programming and Troubleshooting Guide from the Kwikset website and it includes these instructions. You can toggle switches inside the lock to: (1) turn on or off the beep; (2) to turn on or off the light -- it flashes periodically in colors that indicate whether the lock is unlocked (blinking green), locked (blinking amber), low battery (blinking red), or to indicate a problem (solid red); and (3) turn on or off the option to have the door lock automatically 30 seconds after unlocking. The only negative for my application was that I was unable to rekey the lock to match my existing key. My existing key was the wrong size and shape to fit into the lock. I'm guessing you have to have a Kwikset key to use this feature.

A long time ago in the first house my wife and I bought, we locked ourselves out. A call to a 24 hour locksmith, 2 hours sitting on our front porch, and $100 later, we were back inside. I swore I would never do that again. We tried key boxes but I never liked the idea of leaving a key unsecured (albeit hidden) for anyone to find. When we bought our current home, I told my wife that I wanted one of these locks to replace hiding a key box. It has been fantastic. We use this lock literally 5-6 times a day and it has never failed. I will say that I have tested other Kwikset models and they seem to be faster than this one, but it does the job reliably. I like the idea of having separate numbers on this rather than 5 groups of 2 (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, etc). To me that makes it harder to guess the combination. I also like that this can be connected to a security system and automated if that is ever needed. We have had this almost a year now and we're still on the original batteries as well. If this dies on me I will update this review.

I purchased this item on July 1, 2015 and it's been over 1-1/2 years of experience with this item. It's still functioning great. Originally put some Duracell batteries in this thing and they lasted several months. Replaced them with Rayovacs and lasted another several months. It's now running on some rechargeable eneloops and it's been about 4 months right now. If they last another 2 months, I'll be very happy and will need to update my review on the eneloops. For those not having much luck with rechargeables, try the eneloops. I swear, they are the BEST rechargeable AA/AAA cells I've ever experienced. You can get them at Cosco for less than what Amazon lists. [Pros] - Batteries last at least several months before having to replace them. - Rechargeable ENELOOP has lasted 4 months and still going... I will update with overall. - Been over 1-1/2 years and still works great. No issues. - Convenience of not having to deal with metal keys. - Add guest pins for neighbors when out of town to water plants etc. Returning the favor of course! - Easy to install, RTFM and you will be fine. Also, don't lose the manual and the included allen hex key! - Buttons have not worn out or can expose the numbers used in the pin. I've read reviews where the touchpad one can possibly expose the numbers due to wear. Just looking at the buttons. When I got the z-wave model, I didn't get the touch (916) since these buttons are perfectly fine. - Hit lock key again to show backlight in the dark. I've never had to use it since my home is automated. If the power goes out, then I probably would need to use it. - Works when the power is out since it runs on batteries. - Looks great and matches all the other ORB kwikset handles I've installed. [Cons] - None since purchase! [Regrets] - Wish I had purchased the z-wave model at the time. [Additional notes] - Comparing this with the new z-wave model, the keypad on the z-wave version is a little smaller so the paint marks outlined the new one. I decided to try the keypad from this one with the z-wave version and it works. So the keypad from the new one is connected to this (non-z-wave) model. Hope this info is useful for those who plan to upgrade to the newer smart versions. [Conclusion] I've read some strange reviews, such as the guy who removed the plastic window thinking that's how to replace the batteries when the manual doesn't illustrate to do that. The plastic part is for z-wave and zigbee radio frequencies. For those with battery issues, it's probably the cold weather. Lithiums might be better to use. In my case, I live in the south and the eneloops work great. I'm so happy with this product that I decided to upgrade the one on my front door with a z-wave model. I've moved this one to the interior garage door. My wife would accidentally lock me out in the garage not knowing I was out there. I can easily enter a pin and get back inside now. I'm ready to buy one of the z-wave interior locks and another z-wave deadbolt for the backdoor. I will be writing a review on the z-wave version. I'm using some fresh recharged eneloops on the new one. Hopefully it lasts as long as this one has.

I love this lock, I can’t imagine how many times (before owing it) that I rushed out of the house and asked a family member to lock up behind me. Now that I can lockup with one press of button there’s no excuse; I always lock the door on my way out. (BTW, there is an auto-lock feature but I don’t use it because we don’t want to deal with that when unloading groceries from the car.) I also love the fact that everyone in the family can have their own key code. The ability to have up to 10 digits per code allows everyone to use their favorite numbers (no matter how long or short they may be). I’m the principle driver in our household so prior to owning this lock everyone always waited for me to exit the car and unlock the front door for them (basically because I already had my keys out since there were in the ignition). Now my wife and son don’t wait for me; they usually have the front door unlocked, opened and the home alarm turned off long before I have the keys out of the ignition (and my sunglasses put away). This lock works like a charm! The ability to use either a key or combo keeps me from worrying about the batteries running out yet it also means that my son never needs to keep the house key in his backpack at school (that used to be a small worry for me). One more feature that I love about this lock is its ability to be easily re-keyed by me... Keys are cheap but I've always hated giving a key to a neighbor when we head out on vacation (I trust my neighbors but know nothing about their teen visitors). This lock allows us to have multiple sets of keys and switch sets via a simple 60 second process. One could always give their neighbor an access code, but adding and removing codes is actually more work then re-keying. Aesthetically, most locks eventually develop small scratches from frequent key use… I suspect that I’ll rarely use a key on this lock unless the batteries run down yet I’ll probably replace the batteries long before that happens.

Been using this since it arrived in November 2014, so after 3 years of use I think its time for a review. Put this on a newer door that already had a deadbolt, so installation went easily. I set the automatic feature to lock itself after 30 seconds. For those of us that live in a 4 season zone, know our doors and windows open and close differently according to outside temperatures. I've had to make some minor adjustments here and there during different seasons, but nothing major. It will sound an 'alarm' so to speak when the lock is not fully engaged. Some reviewers complain about that but, our house having been burglarized, I think this is a great feature. If your door opens differently according to outside temperatures, plan on doing a little minor shaving and chiseling here and there and keep a key within outside reach for a year or so until it works perfectly, like mine does now. I also discovered the perfect batteries for this. They are sold here on Amazon. Quite by accident I put the 3.7v 14500 2000mah rechargeable Lithium batteries in the power pack one day. What a difference! It no longer sounds and moves like its battery powered. Now, with these batteries, it moves and sounds like it an electric lock. Long story short, after seasonal adjustments to make sure the lock properly engages in all temperatures, and with the upgraded batteries, 3 years without a key!

I love the sleek look of the satin nickel. I love that this allows for keyless entry, so I'm not having to fumble or look for my keys in the dark. It's convenient that my family and I can go on walks around our neighborhood and not worry about if someone grabbed a key or not. Pros: - I like not having to carry around a key, although it has a keyhole if you forget the passcode or if the battery on the unit goes dead - I like that there's an easy lock button, so when you exit the house, all you have to do is push the lock button, and it turns the deadbolt to lock (no having to use a key to manually lock from the outside) - I like that you can program a number of different passcodes, so each person in the household could have his/her own code that is easy to remember - You can program this to be compatible with another Kwikset SmartKey (so for instance, if you purchase the separate Kwikset knob that comes with its own key, you should be able to program the deadbolt so that it is compatible with the key for the knob, that way you are not having to carry around 2 separate keys; 1 for the deadbolt, and 1 for the knob). We haven't tried or done this yet, but it's a nice feature. Cons: - The keypad does not light up, so it can be hard to see the numbers in the evening - The battery seemed to die quickly; we had to change it within the first month after purchasing. Hopefully this was just a fluke in the first set of batteries we used, because it'll be a pain if we have to uninstall the deadbolt and replace the batteries each month. - I wish you could program the Kwikset with your existing house key instead of it having to be with a Kwikset key because if you don't change the bottom knob, you will still have to carry around 2 sets of keys (1 for the deadbolt in case the battery dies and 1 for the bottom knob) Overall I'm happy with the purchase and am satisfied with the convenience it has provided!

Does everything I was looking for it to do. I like how you can program multiple codes and the code doesn't have to be just 4 digits. Just know that at night, you have to press the lock button first before the keys will light up. I called customer service thinking something was wrong because the numbers weren't glowing when I entered the code and they asked if I pressed the lock button first. So I was the dummy. Great product.

Other reviewers have mentioned that it didn't last very long, but all I can say is that it installed fairly easily (about 35 minutes, but it was professional installer that I arranged through Amazon to do it - GREAT service by the way!!! Hire a Handyman). And for now...it's working great. UPDATE: My device needed new batteries today, exactly 1 year, 10 months and 3 weeks after original installation. That doesn't seem to bad to me, but I have to admit that (since I work from home), I don't enter/exit the house nearly as much as those who don't. I wil l also say that I didn't pick up on any kind of warning that the batteries were "going" - just all of a sudden the keypad was "dead". Good darn thing I still carry a set of keys in my purse! :) BTW, batteries were a BREEZE to change (see photos). Hope that helps others a bit.

First, I had an issue with getting Prime delivery. I contacted Amazon and they said they would have it sent from another warehouse. I got it on time... however, upon opening the box, the adapter was not in the box. I called Kwikset and they sent me an adapter, but they told me it would take at least a week, so I put it on without the adapter. The turnstile has to be in a certain "home" position for the bolt to turn properly. After several unsuccessful tries, I finally did a factory reset on it, played with it some more, and that finally set it up so I could install it. You're at the mercy of how the motor turns, as you cannot do it by hand. Now, the damn keypad won't light. I call Kwikset and tell them that I tried a diagnostic test that is supposed to light the keypad, and it doesn't. They tell me that I have to be in front of the lock to verify this, and the lock is on my mother's door. I get a case number and tell them that I will call back when I have more patience. Just burn a $100 bill, it will be easier. The lock does work now, but the keypad won't light and the time involved for their "easy setup" is ridiculous. I have a funny feeling that since I complained about the shipping time, they sent me a piece of garbage, just to get it out on time. I'll update this after I call Kwikset... for the third time. Edit: After working with Kwikset, it was determined that the lock was faulty and I was sent a new one, covered under warranty. It set up easily and works great.
