My husband works basically during all daylight hours, making the tedious part of yard work (weed eating, cutting of small trees, push mowing the parts the rider can't get) sadly lacking. Our gas weed eater, I readily admit, works just fine and has for many years, but that sucker is HEAVY after lugging it around for than 30 minutes. I finally made an executive decision to purchase a battery powered...well, everything, to make my life easier. So here's the review: Note: My property is a little over 3 acres with about an acre or so of mow-able land. The rest is timber and underbrush. We slowly clear the underbrush to have more open land. And we have a LOT of trees that have a lot of grass around them. Enter weed eater necessity. PROS: - It's light, seriously light. Yes, it gets heavy, too, after a couple hours of weed whacking everything, but definitely not like the gas powered one. - Adjusting the intensity of the 'whacking' is simple, just a twist of the dial. Easy for grass (I mean the thick stuff that hasn't seen a mower in two years) and brush. - It's fun, yes, fun. I keep finding more to weed eat just because I want to play with it. - The battery has a meter on it that tells you how much life (approximately) is remaining. - The battery charges relatively fast - about on hour. And with that meter, you can see how much more it needs to charge (approximately). - The shaft retracts into itself for a smaller footprint. CONS: - The battery life is less than desired, but I knew that going in. You have between 20 and 30 minutes of life out of each battery. I have 3 so this is not an issue, but even if I had only 1, the hour break is not so bad. - It didn't come with a hot, shirtless young male gardener.

I bought this at the same time as I did the 40V Black and Decker mower which came with 2 batteries so I opted to buy this with no battery. The Batteries seems to charge a little over an hour after being depleted, not bad. My yard had gotten very out of control due to a new born and busy work so it had become very dense and very tall. I was thoroughly impressed with how well this did! I got about 30 minutes on the highest setting per battery and it did battle against the evil weeds with ease. I'm sure with a better kept yard you can achieve much longer duration on your batteries. I have attached pictures of how far 1 battery got me. The weeds are probably close to 3 feet tall or taller in some areas. Due to our one outlet outside a corded weed eater would not work and I was tired of the old 2-stroke gas engine. This was well worth the money, it does a fantastic job!

I've had a 4-cycle gas edger for 6 years, and it finally started causing me some problems. I'm a software engineer, so I don't pretend to know a lot about gas engines. I've come to terms with it. So, I decided to see what alternatives were out there, and found this. I was a little dubious at first, but decided to give it a shot. The verdict? I like this one better than my old gas one in every way, and I won't be going back. 40 volts is a lot of juice for an edger. It cuts through weeds and edges along my driveway and walkways without any hesitation. And the battery lasts quite a while. I leave it on the maximum setting 100% of the time, and I can trim around all the trees and natural areas in the yard, and then edge around the back patio, the driveway and the walkways, and still have over 50% battery when I'm done. It is lighter weight and lower maintenance than my old gas edger. You don't have to worry about running to the gas station to refill the gas can. You don't have to put oil in it. You don't have to worry about a spark plug. You don't have to adjust a choke. You don't have to troubleshoot when it won't start. And, the automatic line feeder works surprisingly well. All you have to do is charge the battery (I throw it on the charger right before I start mowing and it's ready by the time I'm ready to edge), throw it in, and pull the trigger. It's really that simple, and it has the power to do everything my old gas one did. Why would I ever go back?

I am a semi-retired landscaper that has used many gas oil string trimmers over the years. I like this one so much more! This one does not get hot, it doesn't smoke, it's lightweight and my neighbors can't hear it. No more gas oil mixtures, gas cans and gummed up carburetors! I use it to Edge the curb, my sidewalks, the driveway and my flower beds. It's easy to navigate with the rotating head and it cuts very well on the lowest setting number one with only using about 50% of the battery to do my entire yard. It charges pretty fast in a couple of hours or less. You have to remember to let the battery cool before putting it on the charger. Be sure the charger is plugged in the wall before inserting the battery or you will get a flashing light error. If this happens you have to unplug from the wall for about 30 seconds and then plug the charger back into the wall before inserting the battery. I really like the auto feed string instead of the Annoying bump and go method. I would recommend this to anyone that doesn't want to deal with a heavy, hot, noisy and smokey string trimmer.

I got an LST36W trimmer, an LSC40 charger (max fast charger), and an LBX2040 (2.0 AHr) battery! The last two are not what is listed in the description, and are both upgrades in products. The 40 volt power makes it comparable to a corded trimmer. I'm excited to give this as a power tool gift. I purchased a LST36 in 2015 and have taken care of the battery in my cold weather climate. The trimmer has performed excellent over the past two years. On my large lot I can usually get two trimmings off a charge with my battery. The weight of the unit is both balanced and below 8lbs. I have learned that it's best to buy the 3 pack B&D spooled line on Amazon. The line is spooled at the right tension for the self feed to work properly. I've tried spooling my own,and it stops feeding correctly. I really like the adjustable power dial from 1-6. I usually set it at 3 to do most of my trimming. This model trimmer offers the highest RPMs (6500-8500RPM) of the B&D line of trimmers . Force=Mass (line weight, not diameter) x Acceleration. At power setting 6 (Max power) I've had weed parts fly all over. The guard does a good job of protecting the user, but it can't stop everything. When in the edging position, debris will be even more intense, including sand and pieces of line. I've had no problems when wearing jeans and safety glasses.

I have tried my luck with cordless electric trimmers before and the batteries never lasted very long, or they were underpowered so I was hesitant to go that route again - but like most people I can't stand dealing with oil+gas mix, or priming and yanking the cord 50x to get a gas model to start after you've owned it for a year or two. This 40v lithium battery works wonders and I can do my entire yard on one charge. It also recharges the battery in < an hour if you need to do more. The edging feature is nice although i've only used it a couple of times in the 5 weeks i've been using the strimmer (you can press a button to rotate the head 90 degrees and flip down the edging guide). The auto feed spool seems to work great and I bought a 2-pack of extra line when I ordered this to be sure I was set for all summer. If you really have a larger yard, I think on a moderate speed setting you should get 45 minutes to 1 hour of trimming so you may want a 2nd battery if you have a lot of trimming to do. I recommend spraying down the trimmer with a hose after each use to keep it clean and the grass from clogging up the guard. The other big plus of this battery powered model is it is a good bit lighter than any gas trimmers that i've used in the past. Did I mention you just squeeze the trigger and it runs every time? No yanking a cord and hoping you can get it to work. A note on height: i'm 6' 6" tall and it works well for me, I wish it was slightly longer but if I just switch from left handed to right handed trimming I don't have any issues doing the whole yard and having to stoop much.

Love this trimmer. I used to work for a professional landscaping company a long time ago, and thought gas powered was the only way to go. Probably makes more sense if you're going to use it all day long, but for me trimming my lawn 1-2 times per week, this is perfect. I have had this for two years now and never had a problem. I am really impressed with the fact that it took me almost two years before I needed to replace the spool of string. I read that some people rewind them, I'm perfectly happy to pay for a new spool every 1-2 years at the rate I'm going, and I don't have a small yard. The battery sits on the charger when I'm not using it, I even kept it there over the winters with no problems. I personally don't use the variable speed, I keep it on max and don't change it. The only thing I found annoying was the "safety" button that you're supposed to push before you can pull the trigger and make it work. The button is uncomfortable to push and really annoying. I found an easy solution to that... Push the button all the way in from one side, drill a small hole in the black button close to the handle, then hammer in or glue a small nail. This locks the "safety" button and you never have to push it again, just pull the trigger and weed whack away (see pictures). I don't use the 180 degree rotation feature, I just flip it upside down for edging driveways / sidewalks, the metal guide is pretty cool, it's not the most robust, so would be easy to break if your are not careful, but it works well. I don't usually write reviews, but am impressed with this product, and hopefully the nail tip will help prevent some thumb pain and annoyance as it did for me.

I wanted to revise my review Black and Decker sent me a new trimmer and it works great. I did have frustration while they sent me a battery which took a week and then another week for the charger. Then the last time I called I spoke to someone who said they would send me a new unit. At the end of your call to customer service is a survey just a couple questions but you can leave a message for a manager I did this. I was amazed a manager called me within 10 minutes and told me he would do everything he could to get my trimmer to me. It arrived in just a few days and works great. I ordered this trimmer August 28th, 2016 and I didn't receive it until about September 1st so I used it twice before winter here in Minnesota. I stored the battery properly and this year it didn't work. I called Black and Decker they sent me a new battery which took a week and didn't work either. Then they said it was the charger so they sent a new one but I think the batteries were damaged in the old charger and now won't charge. Amazon of course won't take it back and Black and Decker said I can send it to their repair center but I have to build a box and wait for it to be fixed which doesn't seem right for something that was used twice. I would not recommend this I know I will never buy another Black and Decker.

I used this Black & Decker LST136W 40V Max Lithium String Trimmer for a while before deciding to upgrade to the DEWALT DCST990H1 Max XR String Trimmer. Here is a comparison of the two without taking price into account. POWER -Dewalt is a beast of a trimmer. It is able to power through thick blackberry vines and densely-packed, tall, reedy grasses. -B&D doesn't have the power to easily mow down heavy thick brush but works very well for lawn grasses and moderate weeds. ERGONOMICS -Dewalt is difficult to control due to its length and enormous battery pack. You really need a lot of arm and core body strength to be able to use this tool in a controlled manner. -B&D is lightweight, well-balanced and easy to use for anybody. PRECISION -Dewalt is so big and tough to control that you won't have much accuracy with your trimming. It's made to destroy everything in sight. -B&D allows you to make much more precise cuts which is good if you are working around small trees, vegetable bushes, or flowers. BATTERY -Dewalt 6 amp battery is HUGE and heavy but totally worth it if you need the extra runtime (>1hr) at high power. -B&D battery is about a third the size of the Dewalt and only lasts about 10-15 minutes on high power level. On low to medium level, the B&D will last about an hour with intermittent use. Low-medium is strong enough for standard trimming tasks like lawn grasses and small weeds. SAFETY -Dewalt violently sprays particles everywhere because of its power and its tiny guard. Expect to get your legs blasted with vegetable matter. I routinely get stuff sprayed into my face. You will want to wear tough, long pants and safety glasses at a minimum. -The B&D sprays stuff too but you don't need to get armored up to use it. STRING MANAGEMENT -B&D has a big edge here because pre-wound spools are available. This means easy replacement and no concerns about knotted or crossed lines. -Dewalt string can be a pain to deal with. I have been trimming with the Dewalt weekly and lately almost every session requires me to deal with a string issue of some kind. You must replace the string yourself which is cumbersome and takes practice. The string is stiff and not that malleable which means is difficult to wind it neatly without crossed lines or knots. OVERALL -Get the Dewalt if you live in the country or need to power through thick brush regularly. -Get the B&D if you just need to do general-purpose trimming tasks on a suburban or city lot.

At first this thing looked like a toy. I charged the battery and assembled the unit (very easy). My two gas weed eaters (curved shaft & straight shaft) are of the professional quality and have a double string assembly so in turn this B&D single string unit looked and felt like a toy. Never-the-less I used it and to my surprise it did a wonderful job. I was amazed. I trimmed the dog run fence (70ft by 100ft) inside and outside and still had a 1/2 charge left in the battery. I purchased it just for doing the dog run because the dogs are always fertilizing it. I have over 3000ft of weed eating to do with the gas weed eaters. I modified the gas weed eaters to a single sting system like the B&D one. You might ask why? Because I noticed that the B&D did not pull the head into & scalp the grass. Life is easier now. Since the B&D has a plastic shield on it I suggest you clean it after use (I use a stiff Wisk broom) and make sure you clean the top of the motor off because that is the air intake for the motor and you want to keep it clean. Thank You !!!
