Does a WONDERFUL job. However there are several things that were ...
I am rating this Winch a 5 Star because it is a BEAST, and Does a WONDERFUL job. However there are several things that were not good and had to be overcome to get it to that point. This of course was annoying. The first issue was I got the Winch in and Mounted it to my 2500 Chevy Silverado Diesel. The Winch was SO big I had to make some modifications to the Winch Cradle I got from Tuff Stuff to make it fit the Curt 31042 Front trailer hitch. 2nd after I did 5 pulls with the Winch it just completely quit and would never work again. Now I did do four of those five pulls back to back. However that should NOT have been enough to kill it, but it did. So I told Amazon and they promptly sent me a new one that arrived within 2 days, which was nice. No questions were asked. I have used the new one for 10 pulls and it is VERY strong and works Amazing!! 3rd Alot of the fastener hardware is cheap Chinese screws that have the head strip out easily if you don't press it hard as an 800 lb. Gorilla can. I recommend replacing ALL fasteners with American made Stainless Steel equivalents. 4th they sent the Wrong Mounting bracket so I could not Mount the Module on the left side of the unit like I had preferred to do. Going to call SmittyBilt and see if they will send me the correct bracket. 5th So since the side mount Bracket did not have the correct fitment I had to use the center mount method. Well once installed the module, it would slide from side to side on the cross members. So I had to take it off and bend the Bracket so when mounted it would be tight and could not move. A hassle for sure but not that big of a deal. 6th the second winch that came in had a remote that would randomly bump the line back out into Spool out mode. So While I would try to wind it up the line would just start coming back out. I corrected this by taking the first Winch'es Remote and sending back the second Winch'es remote with the defective Winch. The Winch has Not had that problem at all since trading out remotes. 7th on both Units You have to bump the Remote in or out sometimes to get the clutch to engage or disengage. (Not to big of a deal just a little Quirky) 8th Finally the Free Spool is a little difficult. I am 6'-4" and a pretty strong guy, However I have to really put the Muscle into it and really lean all my weight into pulling the line to get it off the drum. I know that was alot, but if you can get past these quirks as I did the Winch is actually quite Outstanding. The main thing is I think SmittyBilt REALLY needs to up their game on the Quality control department, as well as upgrading ALL fastener hardware. I have loaded vehicles onto trailers, pulled up stumps and destroyed a mobile home with this Winch. it is Very Stout. I will come back and give it a 6 month review when that time comes. IF this unit ends up dying in that time.... I will get it fixed, sell it, and buy the Most expensive Warn I can find. I hope it Will not come to that though..... and by all the other reviews I have seen.... I dont think it will. I say Give this Winch a try You Might end up liking it.

Not cheap Chinese!
I ordered the winch and it arrived in days! I was very surprised that this shipped free as heavy as it was so kudos t0 Amazon. This is why I buy virtually everything from them. The install and wiring on my Go Rhino bumper was easy as can be. I have not yet used it off road and will provide a 6 month review after putting it through its paces. I will say that I researched so many winches and this seemed to be the very best deal I could find anywhere. The only negative is that this is made in China, so that probably is why its cheaper than Warn or other USA brands by lots.

I love this winch
I love this winch!!! Very well made and would buy it over a Warn winch any day. I trust it and it has not let me down. Easy to install and it even looks great on the Jeep being low profile.

Able to winch my 4500 pound Dodge Durango
Powerful: It's less geared down so it winds in faster, but is still rated at 9500 pounds. With the parking brake on, I am able to winch my 4500 pound Dodge Durango and skid the back tires on concrete with ease. I also purchased a snatch block, so I can double the pulling power if needed. Waterproof: My previous two winches lasted between 2 and 5 years, so I decided to switch brands and try a Smittybuilt. If it fails, I will update this review. Nice features: Magnet in control handle is a nice feature. Comes with a roller fairlead which some other companies / winches sell separate. Three small problems: Handle to switch from free spooling to "in" is sometimes hard to move; you have to click to wind it in a little to get to the spot where it can be changed. Bracket for attaching to the left (over the motor) has wrong screw-hole spacing, so I attached it over the spool. Slightly hard to attach electrical cables; the open end wrench to hold the inner nuts has to be thin enough to not hold out the outer nut. I had to grind an open end wrench to make it thinner.

Mounted with an Iron Cross bumper on a 2010 Dodge Cummins 2500. IT DID NOT FIT! I had to get brackets welded on the bumper to make it work. I used the winch maybe 4 times and one of the 5 little prongs in the control box broke. I was always very careful plugging it in, no idea how it happened. 3 stars for now. We'll see how Smittybilt's customer service is and then change the rating accordingly. Update: Smittybilt swapped out the broken piece free of charge. Great company to work with!

Great price point for what this winch can do.
This 12k XRC is impeccable for the money. Fairly waterproof. Mine been through foot of water with no problems. I have a 2016 Chevy 2500HD Crew Cab LTZ. The winch performs perfectly even with as heavy my truck is and once had my trailer with 2 dirt bikes, a Polaris Ace 550 and loads of camping gear. Steep, rocky incline with dry, loose gravel. The short distance to get the KO2's to grab more stable ground was flawlessly pulled. I have it in a Smittybilt receiver cradle. The option to pull forward from the DrawTite front receiver or DrawTite rear receiver makes for confidence knowing you can get through or go back eases the mind. Love the power and easy operation. The price point is excellent considering friends have their high dollar Warns etc and mine does all theirs do and my truck is huge and heavy. Performs as well and they have Jeeps.

Better than that other W brand!!!
The big W brand (won't speak the brand name here) winches are for prissy snobs that shop at Nordstrom and wear bedazzled Celtic cross button down shirts with white underarmor sunglasses (you know that guy). The rest of us, normal folk, don't have that kinda green laying around so we are force to look at other brand names. Ive been wheelin offroad for a long while now and I can say with great confidence, Smittybilt winches are top quality!!! They are so good, in fact, I decided to give it a real test and winched my wrangler right up a damn tree...the only problem was...went to let it back down and the wrangler wanted to tip over wheels up...had to get a buddy to winch me back over...wont be doing that stupidity again!!! Buy a Smittybilt...dont wear bedazzled Celtic cross button down shirts!

great product! worth the wait to be installed after i bought it!
purchased this back in 2015 (and yes, with synthetic ropes) but only installed it this year after i bought (and installed) an ARB off-road bumper, dobinsons springs and the matching ironman shocks (to handle all the weight) on my J90 landcruiser prado - front and rear. had to do some minor re-engineering on the bumpers to ensure i can maximize the winch (in terms of strength) and it works great! pulled up my sedan up a 30 degree incline for 20 feet or so without a hitch while my car was not flat straight with the other vehicle. only thing i am wishing for is a remote (wireless) control attachment so that i can operate it from the inside of the vehicle. unlike some other winches, this does not come with wires (nor switches) to be operated from inside the vehicle (unless you run the connected control all the way to the inside of the vehicle). if there would be such an attachment, i would buy it in a hearbeat! it performed as advertised. i just could not install the cover (yes, i also bought one) due to space constraints on the install - my bad. this will be a great rescue vehicle now specially in the philippines... it did not come with a sticker for me to put on my bumpers but had one manufactured anyway!

Great Winch for the $ !!
I have the XRC 9500 mounted on the front of my 99 Silverado and it has never failed me. I live next to the Withlacoochee State Forest in Florida with lots of sugar sand and in the rainy season there are plenty of deep puddles some of which can leave your vehicle high centered and immobile. Although I haven't been stuck many times, I have use my Smittybuilt winch countless number of times to extract other vehicles that visit the area for 4 wheeling that aren't familiar with the pitfalls of the forest... My only problem is last week I went to use my winch to extract a jeep and the control cable wouldn't control the winch so I had to manually short the solenoid to operate the winch.(the winch is a year old now) When I got home I contacted Smittybuilt to inquire as to how I could acquire a replacement remote cable. The customer service rep had me do a couple of tests so he couls indeed confirm the it was the control cable that was faulty. After that was done, he asked for my address and told me that he would be sending me a new control cable out free of charge.!! Not only is Smittybuilt a GREAT winch, but the customer service is "top notch" and they speak English !!
