Appeared to be brand new and a steal at this price
This Brother RSQ9185 Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine, Renewed, appeared to be brand new and is a steal at this price. This is a computerized machine that is wonderful for new sewists or more experienced sewists, alike, who are looking for a lot of features at a bargain price. I have been sewing for more than 40 years and create a variety of items including home dec, clothing, even wedding gowns. I have several, much more expensive, sewing machines but I purchased this for a young woman I am teaching to sew. It has the features I consider essential for pleasurable sewing, as well as a host of extras that really encourage creativity. Crucial for new sewists, IMO, is the drop-in bobbin, speed control, needle up/down button, push button reverse, a free arms for sewing cuffs and baby clothing, and one-step buttonholes. Beyond that, this machine has 185, built-in, stitches. These include a number of stretch stitches, which are necessary for sewing knits and other stretch fabrics. There are 8 different buttonholes and even an alphabet with numerals, although the alphabet is very simple and more for labeling clothing. It comes with an extension table, which supports larger projects, and is very useful for sewing knits without stretching the fabric while stitching. The stitches are easy to select and adjust because of the backlit, LCD display. The bobbin winder mechanism works well and winds smoothly and evenly. It's easy to thread. It has an adequate light on the sewing area although all sewists benefit from additional lighting at the machine. The machine has more heft than many budget machines but it is still lightweight enough to move or take with you. (It does not come with a case but you can buy one for a reasonable price. https://www.amazon.com/JOYPEA-Sewing-Machine-Carrying-Case/dp/B07R13HVP3/) It comes with a small assortment of the most used, snap-on, feet - even a walking foot, which is good for slippery or difficult to handle fabrics. It also comes with an excellent user manual. And even though it is a refurbished machine, it carries the full warranty. This is advertised as a sewing and quilting machine but that's a little misleading. You can technically quilt on any sewing machine that has a straight stitch and you can certainly do so on this machine but quilting machines generally have much more space between the needle and the right side of the sewing machine to accommodate larger quilts. You will have no issues piecing quilts, but actually quilting bed size quilts will be challenging at best. This machine is better suited for smaller quilted items or clothing, as well as general sewing. It will be frustrating, space wise, for people who want to quilt large quilts. So this is not an all metal machine and I would not advise sewing very heavy materials like multiple layers of denim or leather on a regular basis. Hemming jeans or small items out of heavy canvas, etc., are OK as long as you use the right size needle and take it very slowly. This machine is not heavy duty enough to sew those kinds of materials frequently. But for most fabrics, it sews with ease. I also found that some of the stitches needed some adjustment to be perfectly balanced, but this is easy to do. The manual covers what a balanced stitch is and how to achieve it. In general, I would say this is not a machine you will be handing down to your grandchildren but it's a great machine for pleasurable sewing that won't break your budget. It would make a wonderful gift for any new sewist and at the current price of less than $120, it's a deal. After reading the other reviews, I see that some of these machines are not as pristine as the one I got. For that reason, I would suggest opening it immediately and at least test driving it so you can return it for another one if you have a problem. The price and features were good enough for me to buy this and fortunately, I got one in perfect condition. My young friend is thrilled and just sewed her first article of clothing on this machine. If you have decided to buy this, or any, sewing machine, here are my best tips for prolonging the life of your machine and getting great results: keep the bobbin area clean. Brush out fibers regularly - with every bobbin change is my rule. Lint in the bobbin area messes up your stitches. Use quality thread. Cheap thread breaks and sheds and frays and gets lint all in your machine. Use the right size needle for your fabric. Try to avoid sewing over pins. If in doubt, re-thread your machine. That will fix most issues with stitches that aren't due to lint in the bobbin area. Happy sewing! Update: I like the one I got for my young student so much that I bought a second one for myself to travel with. The second one, again, looks brand new and works perfectly. I am very pleased.

This is a great machine and a great value
We bought this sewing machine after doing a bit of research. We really just needed one that would sew patches and repair minor clothing issues. This sewing machine is absolutely fantastic. It has a automatic bobbin winder, bobbin loader, needle threader and super easy to use. We have never owned a sewing a machine and don't really know much about sewing and we were able to get it threaded and start sewing in about 30 minutes. The results are beyond our expectations and the price is almost too good to be true.

Value for money. 3 months return period gives you enough time to know your machine.
I am not an expert in sewing but very interested to learn more and sew well. This Brother machine I got is so good and comfortable to use, the manual gives you precise information and has enough features for the new and experienced seamstress. How else can we learn if we buy a basic machine. The refurbished is just a tag, and my machine is just as brand new. Great buy. Value for money.

Totally worth the money!
I am VERY happy I bought this sewing machine. It's very easy to use and the instruction manual is written well. This machine has all the bells and whistles that a more expensive machine has without the high price. The variety of stitches is awesome. You get a great accessory package too! I had to adjust the tension and it made a noise when I first used it but I got the tension adjusted easily and the noise went away, (I believe when the gears became lubricated from using). Yes I totally believe I got my money's worth with this machine and I'm very happy with it.

Happy customer!!!
Holy canoli is this machine bad to the Bone!!! I had ordered a brother cs6000i but I wasn't too fond of it so I sent it back. I'm a beginner so I wanted something user friendly that I could learn and grow and the machine get better and better as I do. This is the machine for the job!!! I ended up getting the refurbished model because the price was on point and budget friendly for a really nice sewing machine PLUS you get the same warranty as a brand new machine so really what do you have to lose!? It comes with all the original tools and comes packaged like it's new in a box that has the logo but says refurbished model. The ONLY complaint I have is that when I first used it and wound the bobbin, it was acting funny so I tried and tried again but it was winding underneath the bobbin. I looked and there was Black string under there so I could tell it was used but hey if it ends up not working for the next few weeks I can send back and re order. No biggie to me. Needless to say, I most definitely recommend this!!!! Update: after I took out the black string from underneath the bobbin winder, this thing runs like a top! I've have no issues whatsoever! As a beginner I even fixed my daughter's blanket that was coming apart and made 2 throw pillows! With the help of YouTube, you can do anything!!! Again, most definitely recommend this machine!!!

When the lady selling sewing machines tells you to buy the one on Amazon...
I am new to owning a modern machine and besides watching my mother when I was very young, have only learned to sew through having occasional lessons, and regular access to materials and "school style" sewing machines at my local women's shelter, so when I first saw this deal while comparing pretty much EVERY machine on Amazon in the $200 range I wasn't sure if I was not understanding some of the features on OTHER machines, because even other refurbished ones were higher priced with less features. Eventually I went into JoAnn's to check out some machines and prices in person. While looking at a similar, though slightly more limited model, I pulled out my phone and asked how this machine compared with the one I was viewing in store. The Lady had to get a closer look and scan through the description a bit, then handed my phone back and said "how do they compare? well, i mean it depends on if you're looking for lots of features and stitches or want a machine to just do the basics..." She then paused, and changed her posture appearing more casual and familiar "That's a great deal. I mean I can't compete with that. I don't really think you'll find a better machine to hone your skills for that price, And its got all the features and stitches you could want even for someone who's been sewing for awhile. I know my job is to sell you a machine but, " she gestured back and forth with her head, "uh-ah,You should totally buy that one on amazon" Needless to say my boyfriend made sure I'd purchased it on my phone before we even got to the checkout of the store to pay for a few bogo summer craft kits for my stepgirls. I bought the $29 insurance plan too that covers it for like 4 years since it was a refurb...figured it would be money well spent if I ever needed it and seeing as the machine it's self was only $118, I could happily afford to lose the 30 bucks if I went 4 years without the need for any service... SUPER easy Bobbin!!!!! Easy to thread the machine and needle. FAST bobbin winding. adjustable speed slider and push button start/stop OR pedal control with option to limit your speed with the same slider. Needle up/needle down button. reverse/reinforce feature. Book explains all the stitches and how to do everything. LED display is set with the right length width and adjusts tension if needed for each stitch choice (with option to modify) and clearly indicates which sewing foot to use, all marked by letter and are a snap to switch between. Even for someone who has always had trouble with the threading and bobbins especially (like me) I find myself not minding if I have to change my thread colors often because it is so quick and simple! especially with the dropin bobbin! Great machine! no problems so far (except when I tried to use Really OLD thread on bathing suit material to attempt to fix my stepdaughter's swimsuit strap...but changing the thread solved all issues). bought the machine in mid June and it's late August now. Have only done little thing on it though. I will update if I discover anything after making a dress or two. namaste!

Easy to use and looks as good as new.
This sewing machine, although renewed, appears and operates just like new. No problems with set up and the instructions were very easy to follow. It sews well and the options allow for lots of versatility. I use mine mostly for quilting and the guides on the base are perfect. Also, the arm extention allows me room to keep my hands on the work and guide it through without hesitation. This is the first Brother machine that I have used and I am quite ready to take on allegiance to the brand and it's versatilty. Also, the cost of the renewed machine was so extremely helpful when it was time to replace my older machine.
