Yes, the up front costs of these filters are about 3X what you would pay for a paper filter, but they last 10+ years. I've owned K&N engine filters since 1998. All of my cars have had one, including my 88 Mustang GT which lasted 11 years before I sold the car. I used the same engine filter for 11 years. Once I saw the air filter, I had to get it. Fit my 2008 Avalon perfectly. I would suggest opening and taking the filter out of the package and letting it sit for a few days. The smell of the rubber will fill your cabin for a few days if you don't. The smell will dissipate after about 2 hours or so using your A/C or heater. Please make sure you also order the K&N Cabin Filter Refresher kit. You CANNOT use the engine filter cleaner to clean the cabin filter.

Wow amazing followed other reviewers suggestions of leaving it out in the hot sun for a day and out of the packaging but in the car for a few days and there is not smell and fits wonderuflly feel like i'm beathing so much better air been in there for three months no problem waitng ot wash and see how it is

I ordered two of these for my 2011 Corolla and 4Runner. Very well made and very similar to the air intake filters. Very easity to maintain. Clean and prep every year or 12000 miles using the K&N Care Kit. Keep your old filter and pull this one out to keep if you decide to sale or trade your car. Took about 2 minutes to install in each vehicle. The instructions from K&N are excellent. This is definitely a very big step up over the OEM filter. Dealers will charge you the same price of this unit to install one of their disposal filters. Do it yourself using this filter because it is very easy to install and will save you a lot of money of the life of the vehicle.

I purchased this for my 2012 Subaru Outback. I read other people's reviews about the odor after installation and did what others suggested. I took it out of the packaging and let it sit in the garage. I kind of got busy and forgot about it for a while, like 10 days, and then gave it the sniff test and installed it. Happy to say I have no noticeable odor. This filter is the same high quality as the probably 10 K&N intake filters I have had over the years. Fit perfect and I am expecting several years of service from this filter. I also bought the cleaning kit but haven't used it. I am happy to be able to clean this filter whenever I want, every month during spring, or after an extra dusty excursion and not have to pay $20 for a new filter. I have no real estimate on long term dollar savings, but I expect it will be significant. Great idea and great product.

OK I'm super bias ... I'd always buy a K&N filter before I'd consider anything else ... just to say this "in - cabin air filter" is NOT the easiest to get to, and many people somehow ignore that as a replacement item. I did a smog check at a local station, only to have some crooks pulled my filter un-promted, and he had enough nerve to tell me, "$30 installed, meaning with labor and parts" ... I mean, it's a really cheap no brand filter, and it'd take me 20 minutes to get the whole job done, cuz I am too slow ... that filter, had I installed it, is recommended to be replace every year or every 12K miles ... it may just filter out 90% of the harmful practicles as to the K&N filer ... why won't I choose K&N then? it's a no brainer.

Installed this in my 2011 Tundra and it fits perfectly. I thought about reducing it to 4 stars as the other posts about the plastic degassing and creating an odor are real. I have had it in my truck for about two weeks and have noticed the dust is much lower, however when the heat is turned on it does get a bit of a plastic smell. I am going to try and put it out in the sun today as others have noted to let the plastic degas more and give it a go. I also bought the refresher kit but have not received it yet. Stay tuned! I recommend buying this as soon as you purchase your vehicle as paper filters are expensive and this will pay for itself in 1 year. I also used some credit card points so it was half the price!

After 15,000 miles of use, I'm still intrigued by a filter that will last a long time, perform well and that can be cleaned and reused. After receiving the item, hang it out in the wind for a day or two to get rid of the (slight) rubber smell. After that, the smell never comes back. I did my first cleaning at 15,000 miles. It looked slightly dirty but a lot of dirt and grime came out. I made my own mix of sodium perborate and club soda to clean it, then lightly misted on a mixture of 70/30 rubbing alcohol and mineral oil. For $35, this filter has already paid for itself. Rather than two $20 cheap quality paper filters that look filthy at 15,000 miles, this looks good after wash. If it lasts even another 15,000 miles, which is expected, it is a bargain. I appreciate the solid feel and frame of this K&N- far better than other flimsy replacements. UPDATE: Second cleaning at 30,000 miles, very dirty, took 3 washes but then mostly clean. Changed the homemade refresher mist to olive oil and added lime juice. Great clean smell, no chemicals. We'll see if it lasts. 56,000 MILE UPDATE: Fourth cleaning; it was dirty after 11,000 miles from the last clean but washed up nicely with the sodium perborate / club soda mixture, sitting for 30 minutes in that. It may be necessary to clean these every 10,000 miles now. While not pristine clean, it's still pretty good, no major damage to the frame or filter material- looks like it will go another 10,000 miles easy. I like the initial smell of the homemade lime juice refresher instead of chemicals.

I was concerned over the smell, so I removed the plastic packaging, wiped the outside rubber off and let sit in the garage overnight. Installed next day, no smell. My old filter was dirty but did not want to pay the dealer 50 to replace it. Glad I bought this filter instead. Plus my a.c. is working better now.

I already had a K & N installed at the engine intake, so I figured why not for the cabin air filter too? As soon as I turned on the A/C after install, I noticed the huge difference in air flow. I can't verify filtering yet since I've had it installed only a week and have barely driven around. The filter is also extremely sturdy and the rubbery frame seals up the compartment properly. I've had paper filters that aren't cut to proper shape and were scrunched in there or were too small. I do have to say though, the first few minutes of running gave the car a funky smell. It's best to leave it running with windows down first to let any of that factory smell to be removed.

Best improvement for the inside environment of your car. My wife has allergy to the point she would not turn the fan on the AC/Heat on because she would start to sneeze. After installing the K&N filter, all of that went away. I also installed one in my car, and now I can't smell the other cars fumes that are in front of me. I really like the fact that this filter is washable!
