I put in a new SSD into this enclosure and connected it to my laptop's USB. At first, my laptop only saw the Sabrent enclosure but not the hard drive. I changed USB ports, even tried it on another computer. Same result, can't recognize hard drive! I was about to return this because I thought it was broke and saw other reviewers having the same problem. I googled my problem and it was suggested that if this is a new hard drive, which it was, I need to first format it before windows could see it. So I reconnected the enclosure and went to disk management. For windows 10, just type disk management. Google this if you have anything other than Windows 10. I found a youtube video on how to do it. The new hard drive will show up in there! From there,I did a quick format which only took 2 minutes. After that, my new hard drive showed up! Then I used the free Macrium cloning software to clone my old HDD to the new SSD, swapped them out, and boom! All good. It did take about 3 hours to clone a 256 HDD to SSD tho. So remember, if you have a new hard drive, please format it first.

My fiance's hard drive died. Without a recent backup, I wasn't very optomistic about ever seeing those files again. The computer wouldn't even boot the operating system, how was I supposed to access the folders to pull my information? I researched some professional recovery options and quickly realized a recovery would cost me my first born child and then some, which I couldn't afford nor were the files worth that much to me. What other alternatives could there be? A quick google search yielded a hard drive enclosure would allow the drive to be read as if it were an external hdd, and for ten dollars I figured it was worth a shot. Pulling the hard drive and putting it in the enclosure, I wasn't able to access the files from a healthy computer because the drive was corrupt and unreachable. I downloaded some recovery software, and lo and behold, it was able to pull the files from the drive for me, save for some random corrupt files along the way. I retrieved 99% of the files in about 2 hours time, and it only cost me $10. I could have purchased 50 enclosures or more for the price of a professional agency's recovery. This product has already paid for itself a million times over, and I've only owned it for three days. Now I hope to be able to use it for its actual intended purchase, once I replace my hdd in my other computer. I couldn't be more happy with this purchase!

Well... I love these... I service laptops for a living and when I find myself 'relocating' a laptop SATA disk into one of these after an SSD is installed, this makes these a great promotional 'giveaway' for my customers. The price makes it easy to afford, and keeps my clients very happy by allowing them to keep their 'old' disk for a backup device. Sure - nothing lasts forever, and I have no illusions that these plastic enclosures will have a fantastic longevity, but the price and the level of quality is totally acceptable, considering that so far, I've not found ANY 2½" SATA-3 enclosure that can boast of a lifetime of more than a few years. And did I mention I use these as a 'giveaway'..? A happy client is a return client... and a 'freebie' often is a key...

So I preface this by saying that before I'd been using a Inateck 2.5" drive enclosure for an HDD and I purchased this Sabrent one because I bought an SSD along with it. My use case scenario is running multiple virtual machines simultaneously (I'm still learning as i'm a student, but I've got 2x Windows 8 (clients), , 2x Windows10 (clients), 1x Windows 2012 server & 1 Windows 2016 Server) all at the same time, so I really needed to replace the external HDD I has previously been using. For some fun I decided to compare them and actually put to the test the whole "optimized for ssd" claim that they had. Honestly I was pleasantly surprised. It really made a SIGNIFICANT difference if you check the 4k read/write perf. I'm using this with a Crucial MX300 (525Gb) SSD as a drive to keep several VM (virtual machines) running at the same time, hence why I needed something portable & really-really fast. I have absolutely no issues and I think it works great, especially considering the value. Plus, if you're like me and would like to have clients or other geeky stuff transfered/swapped/etc on the fly with huge storage this enclosure + an SSD of your choice is hands down better than any proprietary "on the go SSD" like a Samsung T3, both have their pro's and cons of course! But from my perspective the fact that you can swap in and out different capacity of SSDs using a single drive enclosure makes it a far more versatile choice for me atleast. This isn't a paid/sponsored review. I really felt compelled by the performance and integrity of the nomenclature for this product that as an IT guy, it's legit- no gimmicks- no frills- just works! :)

I bought this external hard drive enclosure to use for a hard drive upgrade on my mid 2011 iMac. I decided to upgrade the HDD to a SSD and needed to clone my drive before HDD removal and SSD installation. This product allowed me to do just that. I was able to use the Mac disk utility to clone the new SSD using this external hard drive enclosure. Once removing the SSD from this enclosure, I was then able install the SSD into the iMac. While I do not have a long term review to speak to the daily use of this item, it worked great for my intended use and seems to be sturdy and well built. I imagine it would hold up to long term use just fine. If you found my review helpful, please hit the "yes" button.

This is the second Sabrent brand SATA HDD to USB 3.0 I've purchased (other was slightly different BK-21OS2 model, about 3 years ago). Not much to say, except these do work, exactly as they should. The snap-together plastic "tool-less" design is handy, but likely not very sturdy -- if you want to toss an external drive in your laptop bag to lug around with you, or if you plan to store highly-critical data, you might consider the extra money for a solid all-aluminum enclosure. For me, budget is primary concern -- and this Sabrent enclosure fills the bill. I purchased this to clone HDD to a new SSD for a laptop upgrade, & it performed fine. The prior Sabrent enclosure I had purchased to connect the HDD from a fried laptop & recover Data/Photos, etc. Since then, it's been plugged to USB port of my Modem/Router, providing a bit of simple "NAS" storage & has been very reliable -- and in that usage, it isn't being moved about or handled, no risk of drops, so the enclosure is sturdy as it needs to be. This new Enclosure -- with the much larger, newer HDD (from latest upgrade) -- will soon take its place on the Modem/Router, & I'll keep the older Enclosure & drive for other handy purposes. I'm basing this review mainly on budget/ value, as well as track-record of my other Sabrent HDD enclosure -- 3 years use for around ten bucks (or under) makes me pretty happy !

Tested this enclosure using a used HGST Travelstar 2.5-Inch 500GB 7200RPM SATA III 32MB Cache SATA 6Gbps Internal Bare drive purchased from Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007YJIGPQ/ The drive would be booting Windows 10 Pro using WinToUSB Professional (paid application) for the sole purpose of being able to boot to Windows 10 in the event of a hard system crash to get files off a client's pc. Not using the enclosure or the drive for data backups. The packaging for this enclosure by Sabrent could be a little better, hard to get the contents out of the box initially. Inside the box was the enclosure, a short USB 3.0 cable, and some documentation. The top cover slides off without any tools and the 2.5 hard drive simply connects to the internal board, there was a piece of cushion inside for anti-vibration purposes. The case I purchased was black in color and has a sliding on/off power switch, most enclosures are missing this important feature, there is a blue led activity light that flashes when the hard drive is accessed inside the enclosure. No tools are needed and there are no moving parts. Overall the case is rock solid and performs as advertised. Copying a 3TB test file from my laptop to the enclosure, I was getting 35mb/s to 40mb/s. Keep in mind I am using a standard SATA laptop hard drive, using an SSD drive will give better performance. The only thing missing is some type of carrying case to keep everything protected. Ejecting the hard drive from Windows can be done via the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar. Once the blue LED stops flashing, the power-off switch shuts it all down. Running Windows 10 from the device was acceptable, with no noticeable delay. For me, it's critical to have an ON/OFF switch on the enclosure, I do not like pulling the USB cable out of the pc with a chance that is maybe accessing data. and a bigger chance of corrupting the contents of the drive.

I’m assuming many of you are looking to use an ssd with your console. I bought this to replace my inland (micro center brand $9 also) enclosure that was not uasp because I heard a lot of people talking about how it makes a difference for consoles. Well, technically it does. But the load times are about half of a second faster. Not anything you would notice realistically. Still, since the price is the exact same, I would say this is the superior product just because of the way it is built. It is easier to install your hard drive. No tools required. Build seems superior. I’m not a huge fan of the blue light that keeps flashing though. It gets really annoying fast. You can opt to just turn the enclosure over but I really don’t see the point of the light and wish they just didn’t bother with it. So if you’re looking for a decent quality cheap enclosure for your Xbox this is it. I’ll update later when I connect one to my ps4 pro and see the difference on that

So I bought this enclosure to use with a 2.5inch SSD I have for my laptop. I store my music on it that I use with my DJ controller connecting to the laptop running Serato DJ Pro. Since I got this enclosure, Serato is losing connectivity with the music on the SSD and it's kicking me out of songs and going to a blank screen. I didn't have this problem when I was using the "open" Sata to USB adapter. The only reason I didn't just rock with that is because it didn't enclose the drive from the elements. I'm not too happy with this drive right now. I'll try to figure out if it's something with my laptop, but if it's the enclosure that really sucks and I'll want a refund to get one that doesn't lose connectivity. I'll update this review later once I confirm or deny the culprit! Edit: Changing my review to 5 stars from 3. So it was the laptop not giving consistent power to the SSD enclosure that was causing the disconnects. I had to take my mouse off the USB and use the touchpad instead when having it hooked up and djing. It hasn't disconnected since. I will need to buy a powered USB hub to be able to connect my mouse with the SSD enclosure. I'll pick that up off Amazon shortly. Thanks for reading!!

This product is awesome! It works exactly as intended. It’s simply an HDD/SDD enclosure for any SATA Hard Drive. I bought this to clone my old hard hard drive to a new HDD on my MacBook Pro. As the old Hitachi HDD was failing and would randomly shut my computer off for no reason at all but that’s for a different review. Originally I had purchased a SATA to 3.0 USB cable but just didn’t like it because HDD’s are more prone to shock and can break if dropped not that it would’ve been an issue at all. More so that I have more static in my body since I move around and I am not use to discharging the static in my body and then sitting down for a long period and being relaxed. So I was worried I’d accidentally statically Electrocute the HDD and it wouldn’t work. Thankfully I discharged the static in my body and had anti-static gloves on so that didn’t happen. The enclosure worked, I am only disappointed In two things: 1) it didn’t come in other colors but Black. 2.)The cable wasn’t a strong braided nylon cable it was a regular plastic Sheathed cable so I might have to look for a nylon braided 3.0 usb to 3.0 usb cable. I’m definitely going to buy a large storage HDD so I can back up files on this or keep it just for cloning purposes. I recommend this product for backing up files or cloning purposes it works with both PC and Macs computers. Great product overall.
