The construction is heavy duty and high quality. (It feels heavy for its size.) The mechanism inside is plastic of course. *** I strongly suggest using stainless hardware to mount it! *** Note: I could not quickly determine if the valve seal inside is replaceable. I did not want to take a chance of breaking something before I even tried it. If it is, it would be nice to see that included in the description. Be sure not to overlook the fact that you do need an adapter to use it with a standard garden hose connector which is suggested by Amazon as a usually bought with item. I spent the money on a drinking water certified hose even though it's for animals and not humans. Be sure you have a place where you can mount it. It won't sit properly on the ground the way it comes. I mounted it on the concrete block wall of the house. I suspect you could take a piece of pressure treated 2 by 6 and mount it to that if you really wanted to set it on the ground or a patio for use by an animal such as a dog. Note that if you switch the connector to the other side, be careful when moving the plug to the opposite side. Don't push on the center of the plug when installing it. It's easy to push your finger through it. That's no big deal since the hole is about the water line. It's more of an aesthetic thing. I highly recommend this unit if you have a place to mount it.

Excellent
I've had these installed for 6 months now. No sign of rusting. Nice and solid. These are more sanitary than others. Because they are light-colored, you can tell easily if your horse has gotten dirt in the bowl. I didn't want the zinc from the galvanized ones.

I have used many of this type of waterer in the past. This is a replacement. but is stainless steel. I can honestly say that the quality and functionality of this unit is better. The others will eventually leak as they tend to rust on the bottom. I read some of the other negative reviews and have to think that they have not purchased this type of unit before. This is an improvement of other units as it has a stop built in to keep the flap from bumping into the valve.

The extras make or break this
Ok, so I was ready to return this and give it a 1 star rating. I bought the suggested accessories (the short garden hose and the brass addaptor) and I could not make it stop leaking at the adaptor connection to the waterer, as background i have installed most of our house bathroom and sink fittings so, i tried everything, a bit of teflon, a lot of teflon, pipe paste, and even tried sealing with silicone, nothing would stop it leaking, very frustrated, at the end i after trying to overtighten i even broke the threads. So after reading on other reviewer which suggested a different setup this is what finally fixed the leaks for good (which makes this a 5 star product), dont get the suggested parts!! go to your big box home improvement shop and get: 1/2in. MNPT x 3/4 in. FHT PVC Swivel Model# 53365 (this is to connect to the water hose or spigot) and a 1/2 in. IPS x 1/2 in. IPS x30 in. Faucet supply line Braided stainless steel , lenght depends on your application this works for installing next to the faucet get a shorter one if you are going to use a garden hose, both parts should run you a total of $11 and will assure no leaks, they y connector is optional depending on your setup. Be careful when threading the hose to the plastic as its easy to cross thread make sure they are aligned correctly. Hope this helps someone.

Wonderful product!
I have two 90 lbs German Shepherds that like to play outside everyday. They drink tons of water. I had to keep filling a wagon with water for them so I bought this waterer and connected it to the hose with ease. I attached it to the bottom porch railing so the dogs can reach it. It's an amazing product! They now have water when they need it. It's easy to clean also. I just scoop out the waterer with my hand a few times and fresh water immediately begins filling it back up.

For about the same price, I converted to this product from an automatic water container from Pet Lodge, about the same capacity. The Pet Lodge rusted out, as it was barely galvanized, very thin metal. This one is stainless, and I have it mounted in a wooden frame for my dogs who live in a house outside. The "automatic" part works better than Pet Lodge, and the steel should last longer. I have it sitting on a 2 x 2 concrete slab to separate it from the dirt. I am very pleased with this product!

WORKS GOOD, AND ITS STAINLESS STEEL
This outdoor automatic pet waterer is a bargain based on its stainless steel construction. However, it will not sit in a stable position when placed on the floor or deck, but appears to have been designed to be mounted to a fence or side of a building. Regardless, since I wanted a free standing waterer for outside, I EASILY fabricated a mounting plate from scrap lumber which I save for such small projects. The waterer has been hooked up, and appears to be working well. Very pleased.

I have had this for several months and it works great! I bought a farm auto-water
This is something I have made for my dogs so they have fresh water when they are outside in the yard! It is an auto-waterer hooked up to the water hose. I have had this for several months and it works great! I bought a farm auto-water, an adapter (yellow circle), a quick release (blue circle I can unhook it easily and fast for regular cleaning), the white water hose, and a hose splitter (so I don't have to unhook anything to use the other hose). My dad made me a portable stand that sits low to the ground (so my little dog can reach) with a few 2 x 4's so I didn't have to mount it on a wall or the fence. I bought the adapter and hose that was recommended with this product. No Rust!!

Guaranteed not to rust, bust, or change color!
I was looking for a new automatic water bowl for our three dogs who spend a lot of time in our back yard and need a plentiful supply of fresh water. In the past I had used a couple of "domestic grade" bowls that I purchased from our local pet store, but the galvanized one rusted through in a couple of years, and the plastic one that replaced it was vulnerable to chewing by our youngest pup, and eventually started to flood the yard when its sub-standard float valve started sticking open. So I wanted something a little more "industrial," and this fit the bill perfectly. This thing is built like a tank, and being stainless steel it's also built to last. As others have alluded to, I did have a little trouble getting the supply hose to seal properly to the inlet pipe, but judicious use of Teflon tape and a couple of wrenches got the job done eventually. I used a stainless mesh-clad faucet supply hose to protect even that from canine molars, and the whole thing has been doing sterling service for several months now. Highly recommended.

Connect it properly and it works fine
For the price this is perfect. Many people reported leaks at the threaded fitting. Just put a little silicone on the threads before you connect a hose and it's fine. Also don't let the weight of the hose hang from the connection. You need to suspend the hose so that it comes out straight for a bit. It takes minimal experience and a little patience to do it right.
