- Voice Alarm –Announces the hazard type detected thereby helping to speed up the correct reaction to the hazard detected. Alarm announces “Fire!” when a smoke or fire hazard is detected and announces “Warning Carbon Monoxide” when a CO hazard is detected
- Combined Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm – A single unit can be installed where previously, two were needed. Reduces installation time and helps to keep home décor attractive.
- Audio alarm: 85 dB at 10 feet. Test/Reset Button and LEDs – Tests alarm circuitry and triggers the voice announcement. Flashing green for normal operation and flashing red for alarm condition. Humidity Range: 10 percent to 95 percent relative humidity non-condensing
- Battery - Provides protection even during power outages when many fire and carbon monoxide incidents occur. The unit warns of a low battery condition by announcing “low battery” and by initiating an alarm chirp and activating a flashing red LED. The battery door will not close unless the batteries are properly installed. Note : The date printed on the item is manufacturing date, not the expiration date. Refer to the PDF attached below in Technical Specification for Manual.
- Voice Announcements - Hush Feature temporarily silences nuisance alarms with “HUSH MODE ACTIVATED” and “HUSH MODE CANCELLED” voice announcement. If the alarm had detected a CO level of 100ppm or higher, the unit will announce “CARBON MONOXIDE PREVIOUSLY DETECTED” to warn of the CO incident, when the Test/ Reset button is pressed.Temperature Range:40˚F (4.4˚C) to 100˚F (37.8˚C).Voltage (volts):4.5

It worked better for me to install battery operated CO/smoke detectors versus hardwiring to system
Our home is only 4 years old. Our builder installed 3 hardwired Kidde smoke detectors (i12040) and 2 Kidde CO/Smoke detectors (KN-COSM-1B) within a small radius of our home, which caused unbearable noise when the system lost power one day and all 5 units were alarming. There was no way to shut off the devices, pressing the HUSH button did nothing (by using the end of a broom on the unit on the ceiling). I finally had to get the ladder, twist all 5 devices off the ceiling, unplug it from the wire in the ceiling, and remove the batteries before the noise would shut off. When the power was back on, there were multiple false alarms, twice a day, for the following week. Nothing I did would correct the problem. I read somewhere that the CO detectors have a short life (these were 6 years old), and may have caused the other smoke detectors to malfunction. After spending considerable time trying to find the faulty unit, I decided that all the devices must have malfunctioned due to the power outage. I threw all 5 away. Instead of hardwiring the 2 CO/Smoke detectors into the existing system, I purchased battery operated ones (KN-COSM-BA). Each unit fit on the already installed base, which made it easier. I like that the 2 AA batteries can be changed from the front of the unit instead of having to twist them off the ceiling. This way, the CO detectors are not hardwired into the rest of the system and will go off only if CO or smoke is detected. Hopefully, this is will eliminate another complete system failure if the power goes off. I always replace the batteries on the first of the year regardless if they need it. I replaced the 3 hardwired smoke detectors (i12040), each has a 9 volt battery (for backup) that is located on the back of the unit. The unit is then plugged into the ceiling plug onto the back of the unit, and twisted onto the existing plastic base that is mounted on the ceiling. At first the hardwired smoke detectors all flashed with a solid red light every few seconds. I thought that perhaps it was because I did not hardwire the CO/Smoke detectors. Eventually after about 10 minutes the light stopped blinking, and then had the normal quick blink of red every minute or so.

Great product, easy install and it came with batteries!
This smoke/carbon monoxide detector is excellent as far as general operation and installation. It uses 2 AA batteries which are included and easy to access for replacement and in my case this wasn't a fresh install, but rather an upgrade for an existing smoke detector. The really nice thing about that is that the new unit fit into the mounting bracket of the old unit so installation only took a minute literally. I didn't have to drill anymore holes, but 2 screws and drywall anchors came with it. Also it announces the threat so you know why the alarm is sounding. I don't know how well it will work when it needs to detect smoke or carbon monoxide, but I've had several Kidde products and I have yet to be disappointed by one of them so far and that's good since this could be a matter of life or death. I liked it so much I'm thinking about buying another for a different location of the house. -M

Detector saved my life.
Last evening at 9 pm. my kidde alarm when off. I have a wood stove and sometimes I can get a little smoke in the house and the alarm has gone off for that. But last night it started saying, carbon monoxide. That has never happened before. I called 911, they said to get out of the house and wait. When the fire department came they said I had high levels of carbon monoxide in the house. 60% The alarm is upstairs high on the ceiling near the top of the stairs. I was watching TV downstairs and first I heard the beeping, I turned down the TV volume and clearly heard the voice warning for Carbon Monoxide. The fire department said I was lucky. They said I should have a detector on all levels. Carbon Monoxide stays low to the ground where as smoke goes up. By the time the Carbon Monoxide got upstairs to trigger the alarm there was already a major build up of the poison gas downstairs. This morning the plumber is on his way over to figure out where the gas came from. I just order two more Kidde detectors, just like the one that saved me last night.

Works OK - uses same base as older Kidde units with similar model #
My last unit lasted 7 years before it started chirping indicating that it was beyond the expiration date and no longer functional. This new unit is plug compatible to my original (original no longer available) - it uses the same base and it appears that the batteries can be replaced from the top instead of having to remove the unit and replacing the batteries from the bottom (note that the unit simply twists off the base and its removal is not a problem). It also uses 2 AA batteries instead of 3 AA like the old unit did. The manufacture date on the unit label is one year earlier than the date I purchased it (March 2017 vs Feb 2018). The expiration date was not indicated on the unit's label - I assume it will last 8 years or so. Note that my original unit was falsely triggered by shower steam when it was originally positioned outside the bathroom in the hall way. I had to move it further away down the hall to prevent false triggering - it worked fine in the new location.

Voice Activation saved my life! Get as a gift to your loved ones! You may save their life too!!
Tested just fine. Hopefully we will never know how good it works. Just came back from staying at my mom's house in Florida. Never mind about the hurricane. The Generator was emitting fumes into the roofline, and her awesome "voice alarm" alerted us to carbon monoxide in the house at about 5:30 in the morning. The house was not that old, therefore, now were the alarms. Take them seriously!! We called the fire dept. right away and they immediately told us to get out of the house. A few minutes later, the firemen showed up with tanks and masks on. Did a test before they stepped all the way into the house. YES! WE had carbon monoxide at the Dangerous level in the house. Praise God for the voice alert that screams out "Carbon Monoxide". The firemen cleared the house out by opening windows, turning of the generator/gas, and setting up fans. We waited outside for them to give us the all clear. They told us that we were the 5th house that evening. When I came home, I immediately ordered not 1 but 5 of these. I am giving them as early Christmas presents. It is a gift that may possibly save their lives!! Totally love that they came up with the voice activation because the one I had in the past was old and cried wolf way too many times. It would go off all the time when I lit a candle or sprayed perfume.

Good Cheep Insurance when traveling. Systems fail increasingly and unexpectedly and there are too many sad news items lately.
Just a bit of safety that I slip into my travel bag when I travel. There have been several news stories of carbon monoxide problems in hotels. - this is a great portable insurance. Things seem to be not as well maintained and as safe as I expect, so this is clearly an inexpensive safety device. It is small enough to slip into a suitcase, and it is battery operated so it can just sit on a night stand. The batteries last a long time and it has a low battery warning too. The makers are top rated and all of their products are great.

LIFE SAVER...IT SAVED OUR LIVES!
This alarm saved my family's lives. It started screaming "carbon monoxide!" And the alarm was shrieking loudly. We called the fire department and they said they detected low levels of the deadly gas in our house from a wall heater. Carbon monoxide is odorless and will kill you. The fire department said that the alarm saved our lives.

That really annoyed me so I came and found this
Seems that most smoke alarms these days come with a non-replaceable battery. Apparently we should just start throwing everything away instead of just replacing the parts that need replacing. That really annoyed me so I came and found this. I like that it has both the smoke alarm and the CO alarm in one since that's one fewer odd looking device hanging off the ceiling/wall. So far no false alarms from some "well done" popcorn and other poor cooking choices.

Love the HUSH button!!!
We received the smoke/carbon monoxide alarm this morning and installed it in the kitchen at a level that I can reach to hit the 'hush' button. Installation was simple. The packaging material was amazing, someone really thought a lot about the packaging for it to arrive in perfect condition. We bought this because we have a gas stove and one burner was left on without flame for about a 15 hour period, yes, we smelled something like cooked cabbage but didn't realize it was carbon monoxide!!!! We have two other smoke alarms in different parts of the house, but the one nearest the kitchen went off every time I cooked so we removed it. This one has a HUSH button that stops the loud beeping for nine minutes - plenty of time to clear out smoke from the kitchen so it is installed now at a height where I can push the HUSH button! Hope we never have to use it but it certainly is bringing me peace of mind to have it installed.

This is the new Kidde replacement for the older Nighthawk version
Price was fair @ $25.05 per unit, and they work as expected. My last set of Kidde fire/smoke detectors last 7 years almost to the day, which was the warranty period for the older nighthawk version. This version comes with a 10 year warranty. The new units base is the same as older units so I was able to reuse the older unit base and avoid scuffing the ceiling. Downside is the new units seem to lock into the base and are not easily removed. The battery cover is accessible without removing the unit from the ceiling base, so I'll see as time goes on how much of a pain in the a$$ this will be to replace the batteries. TIP: write the installation date onto the backside of the unit to know 1. if the unit lasted the full warranty period, and 2. to know when the units should be replaced.
