Updated Review: Great customer service!
I gave this a 1-Star review when I received it because it didn’t work. But Dr. Meter got in touch with me and sent me a second one, which works great! I was very impressed with the customer service! Not many companies will go to the trouble of sending you a second product when you are having problems with their original product!

Testing Dr. Meter Moisture Measurement Device, Determining Soil Saturation On Barren Ground, During Winter; PHOTOS Included
Dr. Meter ”Moisture Meter”, Dr.Meter® Moisture Sensor Meter, Soil Water Monitor, Hydrometer for Gardening, Farming, Indoor/Outdoor Use, ' '''''''''Complimentary Product Received for Testing and Unbiased Review !'''''''''''''''''''''''''' Winter, with less snowfall than usual, ground in area of testing appears dry, barren & devoid of moisture saturated soil. However, there is a tree nearby, and trees require water for growth. Hypothesis: the closer testing is done to the tree’s trunk, More Moisture should register. Also, based upon the parched, desiccated wood chips covering the soil, scant moisture is expected/anticipated. Dr. Meter, Moisture Meter, was removed from it’s packaging— a VERY Simple Device: Instrument Panel w/ Large Gauge {In RED: 1-3 = DRY; In GREEN: @3- Almost 8 = MOIST; & In BLUE: 8- 10 = WET}, easily Readable; Gauge Supported by a Long Copper Spike, of Narrow/Slim diameter/Thickness, w/ a Pointed End for More Easily Piercing the Soil. Simple Enough, Insert Pointed End Into Soil & Gauge will register Soil Saturation, degree of presence of water. So, testing began— As expected, Soil further away from the tree’s base was ”DRY”, Registering Slightly Past 1. Unfortunately, at the time, I didn’t have a Measuring Tape on me, to Record EXACT Distance, @2- 3’ estimated. The CLOSER I Approached the Tree’s Trunk, the More Moisture/Soil Saturation Registered on the Gauge— See Included Photos! Further Away, the Moisture Meter Measured/Registered 1 - 3, within the Dry Range. At the base of the Tree, the Moisture Meter Gauge settled Between 5 and 6, in the Middle of the ”GREEN” Moisture Range. Brushing the wood chips & top soil aside, Rich, BLACK, Moistened Earth, Saturated, Moist, Damp, BLACK Soil, was seen, Confirming the Presence of Moisture, Indeed!!! I repeated the testing, in Reverse, w/ similar results: the soil & ground closest to the base of the tree contained the most Moisture, and the furtherAway from the Tree’s base that testing was done, LESS Moisture registered on the Gauge. What wasn’t Tested was differences in depth, changes in saturation per descent into soil. And Complete Immersion of the testing rod—Measuring the Moisture Meter w/in a Vase, Or Glass of Water, Or Bathtub filled w/ water, should indicate Complete/100% Saturation, but I leave that up to you, Curiosity having been piqued. . . . . . . . Buy the Moisture Meter & See what interesting Results you discover . . . . . . Certain plants retain more water than Others, Requiring differences in watering Scheduling— To Become Acquainted with and in tune/sync/harmony w/ your household plants, it would definitely be prudent & worthwhile purchasing the Dr. Meter Moisture Meter to discover, note & keep track of each individual plant’s water retention, soil saturation & water requirements throughout the year; drier seasons, perhaps, requiring more water. . . . . . . It would also be interesting Seeing if there is Noticeable Plant foliage growth, Increased Quantity & Size of Blooms Produced, et al., resultant of having provided the plants &/or flowers w/ the quantity of water they truly Need & Use, based upon noting soil saturation!!! In Reviewing the photos, of Note: the first readings, at the base of the tree, were Between 6 and 7, when the Dr. Meter Moisture Meter was plunged/inserted deeper into the ground/soil. Readings Between 5 & 6 registered at a depth slightly less, so, Yes, I Do Believe that depth is an important variable in testing Concentration of Water Saturating the Soil!! Also of Note, there is a lanyard Hole, at the Very TOP of the Gauge that can be used for hanging the Dr. Meter Moisture Meter from a hook, or whatever suspension and/or hanging device/source is available. The Meter is Solid, has some weight to it, but not TOO Heavy. For someone with Arthritis, or who has difficulty handling items, I don’t foresee the Dr. Meter Moisture Meter Being Terribly Problematic. The lanyard hole could always be effectively used for attaching the Meter to a wrist Tether, should handling be an issue. All in All, a simple effective Garden Tool for Measuring Moisture, sold for a Reasonable Price!!! Good Luck & Enjoy!

Worked for the purpose
Tried to push it into a pot sitting indoors, it started to point at 1 (driest) then I started to water the plant, after I water about 1.5 quart it moved to 4. Always forgot to water the plant, and not sure if water enough. it’s a good indicator. Also tried to put it into a bottle of water (not full) and it pointed at 8. I guess it’s better to make the needle point between 4-6. Worked for the purpose.

Saving plants and dollars one watering at a time!!
This handy little meter is saving me money. I thought my better half was over-watering potted plants and killing them. I figured I would give this a try and use data to confirm the theory. She loves gadgets and started using it right away. We both quickly saw that the plants were being over-watered with this meter. Now she checks the plants with this before watering. No more dead or wilted plants....imagine that!!!!

Defective/poor quality control/UPDATE: Five Stars
It worked fine before it broke, at least I think so. A couple weeks after it arrived I was using it to check my knockout rose bed. After the second reading it went dead. When I pulled it out of the ground the tip was missing! I wish I would have reported it immediately when it broke so I could have returned it for an exchange. I waited too long. I should know better. Update 9/20. Customer service bent over backward to contact me and provide me a new one, which works fine. Both deserve five stars.

nice device to have around in the garden
I am inexperienced to gardening and my experience of planting was pretty negative before. However, I love to plant something in my garden. I decided to buy this meter to do gardening in a more scientific way. I have this meter more than one week, and I find this meter helpful. No more guessing about how much to water the plants. I have tested it while watering my plant and the meter is sensitive. no battery is needed. It’s a great little device to have in the garden if you are new to gardening.

Tested on different plant pots and it works
Received today and was a bit worried from some of the defective product reviews some have seemed to have gotten. I went to test it on my different pots and seems to show the moisture rating accurately.

Has saved my plants
After struggling along for years with my plants (people telling me I don't water enough) I now know I've been drowning my plants. With this meter I have saved most of my plants by not watering until the meter shows they need to be watered. Photo shows the dried up leaves of overwatering and the new growth of proper watering. Please keep making this because I will always have one!

Good and easy for watering plant
It's very simple and convenient. I didn't know about this soil meterMany plants are bred to death. Basically, I've died of watering too much. It was very convenient to buy this, and I measured each one before watering. The leaves of the fidle leaf fig are now growing out of big leaves!very happy!
