Good phone for budget-conscious conscientious objectors to smartphone life
I'm a young smartphone denier. After a long search, this is the phone for me. It may be the phone for you too, especially if you are willing to use it on AT&T's gophone network OR Airvoice Wireless or other AT&T MVNO, or if you are willing to pay to have it unlocked. You don't have to unlock this phone for it to work on airvoice. 20$ a month for unlimited SMS/MMS/calls. Boom. ------------------ Good things: ------------------ 1) Cheap as poo and widely available -this is self explanatory 2) Is not itself poo -I have only had this phone for about a week, BUT I'm relatively certain that it will be good for the long haul. I will update this in the future. I considered waiting to write this review until I had owned the phone for longer and could more meaningfully speak to its status as poo or as non-poo, but I wanted to get this review out before the phone was replaced with an updated version (like this one did for the low-level beloved Z431). 3) Typing is good -the GUI is a little laggy, but the typing is not and the buttons are very very clicky and super satisfying. Easy to press. Yay. One small downside here is that the bottom row of letter keys is shifted a little bit to the left of where they are on most other qwerty phone keyboards, but I became used to it by day two. Bottom line, the experience of sending texts with this phone is very good. 4) Camera is usable in that adorabad kind of way -it takes videos too! 5) Micro SD storage -32 gigs. That's like, a lot of space. The music player is totally not bad, the headphone jack is totally normal and works in a notably normal kind of way, and with that much storage you can take serious quantities of 2MP pictures and videos with your adorabad camera. Also this phone has the built in ability to let you record your phone calls (???), so you can do a lot of that too if you, like me, suddenly find the need to do that upon getting this phone. 6) Good reception -Yep! The reception is just straight-up good. I purchased the motokey ex117 prior to this phone, in my search for a qwerty non-smartphone which I could use on airvoice wireless that was less than 50 dollars, and it had such terrible reception that I could not use it inside my apartment (but if I walked outside it was fine). My apartment is not a "dead zone". Now, I'm a 25 year old non-smartphone-user writing a 5 star review for a flipping gophone on amazon dot com, clearly my expectations are not exactly stratospheric but it's 2015 and I need my phone to work *inside my home*. 7) Text messaging "app" displays your exchanges in conversation mode -like a smartphone. this is very nice. like, you can see your texts and your friend's responses all on the same screen. 2015. 8) Allows for separate ring, vibrate, and silent modes. -OK now this might just be me but I want ALL THREE of those effing modes and I did not realize how important it was to me until I went on this cheap feature-phone rampage and realized how many of them don't let you do this easily. With this phone you just set the "Meeting" profile to vibrate only, and then you can toggle between ringing and silent with the volume rocker and flip to vibrate by holding down the space bar. Nice. 9) Calendar seems totally usable -I don't use it myself because I carry a paper planner (lol), but I messed around with it a bit and it is pretty intuitive and has "week" display mode. ---------------- Bad things: ---------------- 1) The whole phone locking situation -This is, in my opinion, the greatest downfall of this phone. You CAN lock the phone so that it can't push buttons in your pocket and butt dial your thesis advisor, but it is implemented very poorly. When locked in this manner, pressing any of the normal buttons on the front of the phone will not do anything (unless you press the two buttons in succession which unlock the phone), BUT pressing the dedicated power button on the top-right side of the phone, *one time*, UNLOCKS THE PHONE SO THAT ALL THE BUTTONS CAN BE PRESSED. This is, clearly, a serious design flaw. I have not found any way around it, and if someone else has please let me know and I will update this. Also on the phone locking, when the phone is locked you are still able to press a strange "SOS" key which allows you to dial the pre-programmed emergency numbers (911 and 112. no you cannot remove them from the phonebook. Yes, very annoying.) without unlocking the phone. This means that you could potentially butt-dial 911. However, I think it would be pretty hard to do this because of how many menus your butt would have to accurately navigate. This phone does have a timed auto-lock that you can set, which makes all of this a little less bad. But overall, it's a pretty annoying problem. For thirty dollars though, I will deal. It's not a dealbreaker for me because I usually carry my phone in a bag where it is not prone to having buttons pressed, but for someone else this could be a dealbreaker. 2) You can't change the default APN settings for the web browser or email. -Essentially, this means that you can't use data on this phone unless you are using the GoPhone or AT&T network. So for example, if you got this phone and wanted to use it with Straight Talk as your provider (which as far as I know you can in fact do without unlocking this phone), you would not be able to get on the internet or receive email with this phone even if your plan includes a little data. For me, this does not matter because I have no interest in being able to browse the internet or receive emails on this phone. For you, it might be a dealbreaker. Notably, multimedia messaging does not suffer from this same problem and it was very easy to set up MMS on Airvoice's network for me. Unlimited pics. Nice. --- Sooooooo ya! That's my feels overall. I like this phone because it's widely available and super cheap. I like typing on it A LOT. I have a weirdly profound love for the camera. The GUI is laggy but not so laggy that it will make you angry. I would definitely recommend this to anyone else trying to get or stay off the smartphone train who is willing to use this phone on AT&T or Airvoice or another AT&T MVNO or is willing to pay to have it unlocked.

You cant buy in the store anymore!
You cant buy this product in the store anymore! Now ATT is forcing you to have a smart phone. This is perfect for my mother in law who doesnt want to use a smart phone at all. This was a great price for this product as well.

Great first phone for young teen/tween
Just what I wanted for my 13 y.o. who's addicted to YouTube and games. I didn't want him to have a smart phone, but I was finding more and more times when I wanted to be able to reach him (e.g.: this summer when he's out and about in the neighborhood, or when pick-up/drop-off changes occur). I didn't use any of the pre-paid plans that came with the phone because they were all more expensive than our Friends and Family plan. So I just headed over to the AT&T store and had them add this phone to our plan. The only "problem" with this phone is that I thought he'd only be able to text and talk, but he can, in fact, access the Internet and stream videos and music. So we still had to battle about that (and he has to turn it in at night).

nice option for teens who need to communicate
I have two teen daughters that need to be able to communicate with me (and others) via text or talk but they don't need a smart phone. (They may think otherwise. :) ) Anyway, we had one of these for years and it finally got flaky and we bought two more. They can take pictures too. Not smartphone quality, but hey, when I was a teen I would have loved to be able to take pictures whenever I wanted even if the quality wasn't amazing.

Great phone
This is a great phone if you are looking for something simple. I love that this phone does not have Wifi and with ATT you can choose not to have data. This is perfect for anyone who does not want internet on their phone. You can call, text and take photos. It covers all the basics and gets the job done. For those like me who do not wish to have a smart phone this is a great option. I had no problem activating this phone within a few minutes.

This is a great starter phone for a youth
This is a great starter phone for a youth. Or a great phone for the person who just wants to call and text. I had this phone for many years before upgrading to a smartphone. I ordered this for one of my children so they could have a line of communication, yet if he broke it or lost it, no huge loss. Keys are small, so someone with larger fingers might not like it. It was durable and worked nicely.

Works with Cricket. Great for texting.
I bought this phone 3 times in the last 3-ish years. It's a simple, well designed, cheap little phone. As opposed to the flip phones now offered in stores that have 3 letters per key, which is unacceptable for texting, and have a confusing, cumbersome interface. This one has one letter per key and I have had no complaints on it's usability. Of the 3, one I lost and 2 broke. (so, have a plan for your contacts). but it is that much better than the other non-smart options, so I will keep buying it. I do miss the camera of smart phones. especially because I have kids. The trade-off is that I am present when I am with my kids. :) I have the $25/month plan with Cricket!

Excellent dumb phone that will work on AT&T Contract, GoPhone, or Airvoice Networks
This phone is great and serves its purpose of texting SMS and MMS and making phone calls. I've yet to figure out how to set up voicemail, and the accompanying guides are no help. As of May 2018 it works on AT&T's network without issue. The AT&T store employees had no idea how to set this up and believed it would no longer work because "it isn't a flip phone" like the various Samsung Go Phones still for sale, exhibiting their lack of knowledge of phone basics. You need to keep the microSIM that comes with this so that the AT&T store can scan the SIM and phone to switch from your previous contract phone. Battery life with a few calls and texts a day is still 4-6 days before getting dire. Of course would still work with Go Phone. Also works with Airvoice wireless. Will update with durability issues and otherwise if they present.

Good for price
Got it for my 11 year old. Full keyboard, camera for pictures and video. No option for wifi, but that's okay... we don't want him to have full Internet access yet anyway. Does have ability for data (web, sending pictures) but that comes through your carrier.

Elegant simplicity
I used this phone so I could move my 10 cents a minute plan from an old school flip phone to something more modern. Glad to say it worked, I didn't think it would because that plan doesn't allow you to use any internet features. The keyboard is small but you will get used to it quickly, and it has long battery life, I usually go for two and a half days before it needs another charge, sometimes longer. It looks sleek and it gets the job done. Speaker quality is top tier as well. And you can lock the keypad to prevent pocket dialing (which you should do immediately because 911 is in the contacts list!).
