but this tool worked great. No surprises
It's been many years since I've done this type of work, but this tool worked great. No surprises. Fit perfect. Liked the added safety option of having the extending pins that go over the coils to prevent slippage. Really a nice, simple tool that is inexpensive and works well. As you may well know, this job has potential for serious injury if not done properly. If you lack experience, please get some instruction via shop manual. Don't rely on YouTube videos that show very poor safety practices that the poster is not even aware of.

Solid and Safe Coil Compressor
These worked pretty good for compressing the coils on my 99 BWM 323is (e36). I did have to physically push down on the top of the coil to get them back over the struts (the coils were completely compresses at this point). I didn't remove any stars for this because the gaps within the coil itself were relatively large making it difficult to find proper spots to use the tool effectively. Any other coil compressor would have had the same problem. Pros: - hex shaped center screw for socket or 1/2 inch (if I remember correctly) cut out in the top to directly insert an impact gun - detent pins to ensure hooks stay over the coil - heavy duty, forged metal Cons: - Hooks are bulky so if you have coils with very little gaps between, it may be difficult or impossible to maneuver the hooks into place - the depth of the hooks is a bit shallow Overall, great product. I've used it a few times with no problems and feel very safe when it has a coil compressed. Only thing I would recommend you do is add more grease/lubricant to the center screw.

Junk or not?
Purchases this item to replace my Chinese ebay unit that broke...well the item comes in a nice quality case with no instructions (if you need instructions to use this, don't use this) item was constructed of nice quality materials and the and strut/spring adaptors are coated with a pice protective film to protect the springs from getting scuffed. The added pins are an extra safety measure that's well needed in some applications. The head of the tool allows you to use you ratchet (impact gun is not recommended due to safety but can be used if needed) or wrench. Over all a great bang for the buck and very quality item. I have used this so far on 4 vehicles and have had no issues.

Great stuff
I think these are the same brand that you would rent the tool from from AutoZone if you're paranoid like me one of your biggest fears is one of these coming off in the spring launching may be that you are at somebody else or anywhere it's scary so I purchased these because of the safety pin the future to keep it from slipping out there is comprable ones that are about half the price but they don't have the safety pin so I was able to use this the other night for the first time and I was very impressed just when you use it make sure that it's even pressure on both sides and not only that but make sure that is perfectly spread apart across the coil that way the coil won't Buckle sideways as you're tightening it

2017 April Review
I've already use the compressors to dismantle 3 strut assemblies in a junk yard (to recover original OEM software - i.e. rubber & grommets) - and, I've built-up 4 strut assemblies on a table top. These are well constructed tools and a safe substitution for the industrial compressor. However, if you have access to the industrial compressor it would be wise to use it for springs rated above a mid-size vehicle. "You'll know - because the first few turns will feel like you're wrenching a rusty lug nut off - instead of the smooth transition you should get." In many cases, the insulator (top mount) will still be under slight pressure when you back off the retaining nut - and, you will take flight. So, I would make sure the strut is facing a good clearance area before use. ***Overall, outstanding product, packaging, and delivery.*** ---- the word software can be used to describe components to hydraulic and air systems

Works just fine on full sized truck springs
Works just fine on full sized truck springs, they do have a built in 1/2 drive so you can hook up a wrench easily to them which helped tremendously with compressing the springs on my 08 silverado. By the way if your planning on using these for an 07-14 silverado you need to compress the springs to the point were there's 6 inches between each block. doing this will let you put in bilstein 5100 leveling struts in perfectly at their highest setting.

Dang. Good product and design for the money. Nice safety feature.
Came pre-greased. Not that it matters but a nice touch. These have little pins that keep the compressor from flying off the coil spring. Locks it onto the spring so to speak so it can't come off until you pull it back. Very nice safety feature. Did not feel chintzy at all, and the tightening end had a 1/2" ratchet hole so you just put the ratchet in and go to town. With all the talk of how unsafe the procedure is for compressing springs, these take the danger out of it. Straight forward, any idiot with a little mechanical knowledge can use them properly. Highly recommend.

Buy 2 sets just to be safe and ease of use!
Decided that after owning and working on 19 cars of my own and many others from family to finally be comfortable to give spring compressing a shot. After years of general common sense disclaimers, forum disclaimers, online write up disclaimers to be careful with compressing springs, that doing it myself correctly may not be so bad or scary after all. This is especially the case by using 3 compressors on a single spring which allows you to also compress more gradually without too much stress or tension on one side, or if the compressor moved and shifted on you while tightening. Having 2 sets also meant you had a spare just in case one we're to ever break on you mid job by some unforeseen circumstances which should be more rare and less dangerous when 3 compressors we're mounted on one spring. If one did break, 2 would actually still be on saving you from a terrible accident.

Great Product.
I used these to install new shocks on my Mazda Miata and they worked great. There seem to be some reviews here that maybe the kit doesn’t work well with very thick springs, such as with a truck, but for a small car (like my Miata), I had absolutely no issue. Worked like a charm and made changing my shocks very easy. The construction is great and I could see these lasting many years. The only Achilles tendon, are those little rings attached to the securing clips. I pulled a little too forcefully on one of them, and made it unravel/fall apart. Not a big deal, as I simply put a cheap key-ring in its place. Not taking any stars off though, since it was kind of my fault for pulling unnecessarily hard, and this didn’t happen with any of the other 4 clips. I would buy again. Great for the price!

Great Affordable Product
I used these to take off and install new struts on my car for the first time. I did my research reading other reviews and these seemed like the best deal. They are solid metal: heavy and hefty you really don't want to drop one of these on your foot. Installation is extremely simple. Just mount them on opposite sides of the spring, and begin to tighten them. I recommend five rotations or so on each side before switching, so no one side becomes too compressed. They also have a handy little slide bar that locks in to help keep the spring in place. Keep in mind you are working with a large compressed spring which is stored energy that can be potentially dangerous or even fatal if done incorrectly. Be safe and go slow. There are also several good youtube videos if you need more visual instructions. Also other reviews said to use a 21mm socket, but that did not fit and I had to use a 22mm socket instead.
