100% what I was hoping it would be!

I was afraid to get this because of mixed reviews, but I loved the idea so much I had to get it. I love it! Only complaint is that I am sometimes too clumsy and let go when I’m trying to close it. The handle could be easier to grasp, maybe a loop handle? That would be awesome. But it keeps my toddler out of the kitchen and he isn’t offended by it at all. It works great, looks pretty darn good, was super easy to install and is just as awesome as I wanted it to be. I want to buy another one for the end of our hallway to keep him away from bedrooms and the bathroom, it would be nice to let the rooms air out more. I just wish it were a bit cheaper too

this gate works great for its purpose. yes a determined child or small dog could circumvent it by crawli mg under it. however my use is a safety net at the top of my staircase as I have 2 large dogs and one small one that I want to ensure doesn't get knocked down them by the larger ones. in this case it is very capable and take up little space. as for the reviewers who say that it came loose from the wall I will simply say that anywhere should be installed into studs drywall anchors are insufficient for this use. so make sure that are studs where you are anchoring this gate and bear in mind you may have to use longer screws than are included if you use the spacers . so in summation install it in studs and dont exoect it to prevent a determined small creature from circumventing it

Lost the mounts to the wall that help get it over the bottom wood things (yea not a handy man am I LOL). Called the company, told them I threw them out and I would pay to replace. They sent them too me for free. Gates are great. Make sure you use the brackets to get it to the floor. Easy to setup but READ the directions. I didnt LOL. Some wear and tear since we bought them on the black part but nothing bad. I bought three....plan on buying a fourth for upstairs.

Awesome Gate! Very Sturdy and Secure.

This is an awesome gate! I have two in my house, one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. I would recommend this to anyone with kids and/or pets! They are much easier and safer than the traditional tension gates, and heavier duty as well. INSTALLATION Pretty easy, about 20 minutes. I used my own wall anchors to ensure security. It is very secure, even with kids putting a lot of weight on it. My only gripe here is that it's hard to mark where to drill holes if you have to use the little extensions. I ended up making little dents with screws stuck through the holes to mark the spots to drill. A template would have been nice, though. PROS - sturdy and secure - holds up to crazy cats jumping over and launching off the top of it, running into it, and pushing themselves under - easy enough for older kids to figure out and use (although it's difficult to shut from the "wrong side" for shorter kids - easy one hand operation (with the help of a foot to straighten the attaching bar if needed) - easy to clean (just wipe) - looks great - doesn't take up much room when not in use - baby can't get under (cats can if they try hard enough) - just the right height for me to be able to step over it if I don't want to open it (I'm 5'6") CONS - gate can kind of snap back if it's let go of before it rolls back up, which is startling - pulls out unevenly sometimes (once you get used to pulling it at the right angle you don't really think about it anymore) - if the bar you attach the gate to is wonky at all (one of mine is slightly bowed) you have to use your foot to push in the bottom part every time to get it to line up All in all it's a great, safe, pretty effortless gate. NOTE For my bottom stairs, one side is just a small metal rail. I got a 2x2, painted it to match the rail, attached the small side of the gate, drilled some holes and used the holes to secure it to the rail with black zip-ties. It's very secure and looks great! Six month ago, despite the complaints about it's durability in the reviews, I decided to get two of these to tryout. I was a bit nervous because of the bad reviews, but after hours of search online this Summer Infant Retractable Gate fits my need in terms of functional and aesthetic designs. It took me a few hours to to install both of them in front of stairs of our home. They worked perfectly for my then crawling daughter. My wife and I finally can work on things without worrying her falling the stairs. After six month of use (my baby daughter is now walking and running around at home), both gates are still holding up perfectly except for a few minor fraying on the edge of the fabric which it doesn't bother me at all. I used my wife's clear nail polish to seal the edge and voila fixed fraying perfectly.

Best gates out of 5 we have!

We've had 2 of these for almost 2 yrs now and are ready to buy a 3rd for our upstairs. By far the most toddler-proof gates we have! They have withstood our 3yo and 18month old hanging on them, trying to climb over and under them (unsuccessfully), and being accidentally ripped out of the wall once. I recommend attaching to something sturdier than drywall, like a stud or a piece of wood. The one the kids tend to hang on has gotten saggy at the top, but for all intents and purposes it is still 100% functional. We've had several other baby gates that have not been so durable including 3 wooden Summer gates that all broken as well as a long metal gate enclosure that works as a playpen as well that fell apart after about a year.

REVISED AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF USE WITH UPGRADED VERSION OF THIS GATE The idea behind this product is excellent. it takes the very good retractable gate to prevent a child or an invalid from falling down a flight of stairs. The problem is that the netting that is retractable is defective the way this particular device has it set up. Within a few months time the net ripped at the very top. I called Amazon and was very grateful because they allowed me a full refund especially after I had already purchased a replacement which was I thought the exact same gate The New gate I just received had a super strong protection on the top of The netting to prevent The netting from ripping. So therefore I give it five Stars.

It works great for us

We use it to separate our two large dogs during their dinner time. It works great for us, but I can see how smaller dogs can fit under the gate. As far as security, our dogs could definitely break through it within seconds, but they seem to respect the boundaries. So far we’re happy with the gate, and it was relatively easy to install. We like that it rolls up into itself so we don’t always have to have a pet gate.

Great Retractible Gate!

We love that these gates have the capability to be out of the way when not in use! So convenient and they seem to do the job well. We’ve only had them installed for a couple weeks, but they seem sturdy and reliable. I will say that it’s hard to latch the gate with a baby in your arms, but that’s the only downfall we’ve found so far! As a side note, we purchased 2 of them at the same time and then decided we needed a 3rd. When we went back to get the 3rd, the price had spiked up by $30! We elected to go with one of the used gates that stated it was “like new.” The only regret we have is not purchasing the other 2 as “like new.” There was absolutely nothing wrong with the used gate and we spent 1/3 of what the current price was! We would definitely recommend this gate!!

Awesome gate, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon this. Installation was a breeze, follow the instructions, drill pilot holes first it'll make life easy, use a level. It took a couple of tries to get used to the motion to close and open the gate, and after that it's real easy to use. My 18month old pulls and tugs on it and the gate stays secure. I love that there isn't any clutter with the gate retracted. I highly recommend this product.
