Great filter. Get the genuine and don't deal with any hassle.
Purchased April 4th and installed a day or two later. Today (9/23) I'm at the 'red' light indicating to replace. So, it's almost about 6 months. This will vary on how often you use. The filter has been great. No complaints from me or my family. Water tastes great. We have well water, which is softened already, and this filter does a great job and making it great. I bought directly from Whirlpool on Amazon. The only thing I think is funny is that the filter says it's "$86" normally. Yeah right, dude, It's like $49 normally. I think you get about a $5 discount on here with free shipping if prime. No complaints though, just thought that was funny as if it was on sale for half off. C'mon Whirlpool, what the heck? LOL Setup was easy. Hit the button on the bottom and out she came. Put the new one in and done.

Works better than the old blue PUR filters
I have a Whirlpool refrigerator, and my filter was due for a change. I used to be a believer in the old blue PUR filters, cause they had a slight char coal taste to it, meaning that it had active charcoal in it to filter out impurities, even though it didn't always mean great tasting water. Well, I couldn't find any of the old PUR filters from any resellers, so I opted for this one which is the brand/model Whirlpool recommends and sells on their site. The filter is pretty much the same dimension wise, it did take a bit of effort to get it to snap in, but seems to work better. The flow rate seems to be better, and there is absolutely NO TASTE to the water, not even a little hint of charcoal. My guess is there was some issue with leaching charcoal from the old filter after some use, cause toward the end, the old filters had a slight metallic taste to the water, but haven't experienced that with this one. If I do notice anything odd toward the end of use, I will update my review, but so far, the new filters are excellent!

LEARN from my mistake - Don’t buy a knock off filter
Waaaaay better than the last filter. Tell me if this is you. Hmmmmm that name brand looks really expensive, I’m going to buy the off brand. Probably made in same factory and just slap a different label on it. I do that sometimes - sometimes I am right and then sometimes I end up costing myself even more money than if I had just bought the name brand to begin with.... I bought cheap fridge filter On Amazon a few weeks back. I experienced these stringy globs in what was supposed to be our filtered water. I kept running water through it hoping it would clear up, but it didn’t. So I removed the cheap filter. The family was all upset because we had no cold water or ice for like a week. I was not popular around the house. I installed this new Whirlpool filter in seconds and ran a few gallons of water through the system and what do you know - crystal clear water. Sometimes it just pays to buy the brand name.

EveryDrop filter good replacement for discontinued blue filters
Edit 6/4/18: Just installed my second one of these filters with similar results as they first. Fill rate is very consistent with the first filter and the old blue ones. No noticeable odor or taste issues. I will continue ordering these every 6 months until i have an issue. Original review: I finally gave up trying to find the old blue filters and ordered one of these EveryDrop filters. I had concerns about the taste and fill rate issues that other people mentioned in their reviews. I'm happy to report that I have had no issues and the filter works just like the old blue one or better. Here is some additional info for others who might have the same concerns. My old filter was the fast fill type. On the label it was rated at 0.5 gallons per minute (GPM). The new filter does not say fast fill but is also rated at 0.5 GPM. To test how they compared, I filled a 2 liter bottle that I had available before I removed the old filter. The 2 times I filled it took 1:04 and 1.03 respectively. I installed the new filter and timed it from the very first button push. The water looked clear from the very beginning and had no smell that I could notice. The first fill took 1:24 and there was some sputtering as air was purged out of the system. But by the end of filling the 2 liter the first time I could tell the flow was better. The second fill had a little bit of sputtering and it took 1:11. After that, the times were all between 1:03 and 1:05 with no air. The old filters had air pockets much longer than this one did. The packaging recommends flushing 4 to 5 gallons through the filter before use so I filled the 2 liter 8 times which is just over 4 gallons. I then left it alone for about 30 minutes to make sure the filter was filled and saturated. I filled the bottle 2 more times to flush any remaining stuff out. My first glass of water was clear and tasted good. I can now recommend these filters to replace the old blue ones. I highly recommend doing the full flush process before using the water to drink or for ice.

I listened to bad reviews for no reason
UPDATED WITH CUT APART PICTURES OF EVERY DROP FILTER- still just charcoal in a sock ;) There are many recent poor reviews of this product since the changes made to the filter packaging in winter 2015. Being a diligent Amazoner I listened and ordered the "old" 4396810 blue filter from another source that appeared to have back stock. Well they sent me the new filters! So I gave it a try. The packaging mentions it is still a PUR licensed filter. I popped it in, ran out a gallon. The water was clear and taste like nothing-just how I like my water. I will update as appropriate for longevity. I found the blue filters to be good for 3-4 months in the summer and 4-5 months in winter ( we drink mush more in the summer) I also opened up the blue filter to see what is so special that people yearned for, it's just a chunk of charcoal with a sock on it. I'll open up the new white filter when it is spent.

Good filter - tastes fine
I've purchased a few of these filters (both the old blue and new white version) and they have always been great. The water tastes fresh and clean every time and seems to do well with filtering the typical bad tasting city water. The filter mentions you are supposed to run about 4 gallons through it before drinking anything from it. I'm guessing some of the people complaining about the plastic taste are not flushing it properly. It takes a rather long time to flush 4 gallons through the filter by hand. I just run a small tube to the sink and use my shower curtain rod to hold the valve open while I kick back and relax. It takes about 10 and a half minutes for four gallons to run through it (pictured). I recommend calculating the flow rate of your fridge before attempting this method as I'm sure it is different per fridge.

Expensive, but it's the genuine article.
The headline says it all. It's the genuine article with more and higher filtering properties than the cheaper models, but at these prices, it dang well better be, right? They last less than 6 months on my particular water supply, but I have bad water so your experience will likely be different. As with any water filter replacement, be sure to bleed out all the air after installation. It usually takes a couple gallons before the spurting subsides. To check for post-install leaks, I leave a cup under the dispenser and a dry paper towel under the fridge, directly below the filter, for at least a day after each replacement. Never had a leak yet, but with hardwood floors, I'd rather be over-cautious, than surprised. There is no odd taste when the filter is first installed either. Overall, an easy 5 stars, despite the unholy price tag.

Only buy this Whirlpool brand! Great product
Excellent product. **Do not waste money on any other brand**. This OEM Whirlpool Brand filter works great!!! Don't be fooled by other brands fake reviews. Just pop this 1 in, run a few gallons of water through it to flush it out and Purge the air and your ready to go. I thought i could get away buying the cheaper off brand because it had good reviews and i paid the price. The 5 star reviews had to be fakes. The water had a terrible chemical taste even after running several 5 gallon buckets worth of water. .

Fit perfectly, no more smelly water, flow increased.
Fit perfectly in our Whirlpool. You have to keep the cap that is on your old filter so don't toss it, you move it over to the new one when you install it. I have a Thermos water bottle that I keep my water in every day, and on my bedside to drink out of. After sitting over night, I could always smell something when I opened my bottle to rinse it out and refill it. I noticed this did not happen when I filled it at work out of the super-duper reverse osmosis water cooler there. Since changing the filter in the fridge, I no longer ever smell anything when I open my Thermos to rinse and refill it. The flow rate is much higher now as well.

It's not one of those things that is fun to go out and buy but you have to ...
This is the easiest, most economical and convenient way to purchase a water filter for my Whirlpool refrigerator. It's not one of those things that is fun to go out and buy but you have to have it. The price on amazon is better than any price I have found in a store and definitely much better than the price you get in the mail offers from whirlpool. Buying this on amazon makes it easy and convenient to go back to my account and buy a new one whenever necessary without having to go to the effort of finding the proper model number and taking that to the store and searching for the right one. These are easy to install and fit perfectly in my refrigerator. I have a whirlpool side by side. I have never had any trouble installing the filter or with leaks etc. It does the job- water tastes good and I have the peace of mind knowing my family is drinking pure water. When you install it, the water filter light turns back to green and you can forget about it until the light turns yellow or red. They seem to last a long time so it's not a purchase I have to make too often even though our water dispenser gets a lot of daily use. The water has a good taste and no smell. The ice also has no odd smell when I use this filter. I would highly recommend this Whirlpool refrigerator filter and would definitely suggest buying it from amazon to save both time and money.
