Love the WSGSS Guided Sharpening System
I've gone through a lot of sharpening systems over the years, from Arkansas stones, to Japanese water stones, to ceramic stones, to powered belt sharpeners, on and on. I get a lot of enjoyment from free hand sharpening, almost therapeutic for me, but I've always had trouble getting the results I want, nice clean bevels with razor sharp edges. I finally invested in a good set of quality diamond bench stones and started getting really impressive edges, so when I saw the Guided Sharpening system I figured I'd give it a try and so glad I did. The sharpening plates are great quality and the grits seem to be very consistent across the entire plate. I absolutely love the fact that the plates are held in place with magnets and can be easily and quickly changed out to the next grit. The base is nice and heavy even though it's not very big and doesn't move at all when sharpening. The angle guides are a cool feature, but I found that when using them it was leaving small scratches in the middle of the blade near the edge so I took them off. The kit comes with course and fine plates, but I highly recommend getting the upgrade kit that adds extra coarse, extra fine, and leather strop plates. I use a small spray bottle filled with water and a drop or two of dish soap and keep the plates wet with a fine mist while sharpening and it keeps the plates from getting clogged up with metal, a quick wipe with a paper towel removes all the removed metal. This system has replaced me edge pro apex, the only other thing I added to my set up is a Spyderco ultra fine stone that leaves my blades with a nice polished edge.

I wanted something a little better with more versatility
I wanted to wait a while before doing a review of this sharpening system. I have had the sharpener for about 6 months now. I wanted to make sure that I have used it in every application before posting a concise review. I bought this sharpener for my birthday in September. I have used the Spyderco triangle sharpener for a few years now. I wanted something a little better with more versatility. This sharpener is exactly that. It works perfectly on almost every knife I have thrown at it. I sharpen my Spydercos, my Benchmades, my kitchen knives, machete, tomahawk, etc... This thing sharpens everything to a razor edge. The only thing you may have issues with is scissors. The Spyderco has it beat in that department. I would recommend getting the expansion set with extra fine, extra course, and a strop for $20 more. I think it's worth it. This system with everything is about $75, but it does just as well as those $300+ systems. I have seen reviews that people say "it is not really guided". That is false. It is guided. The guides are meant to set the angle. All you have to do is maintain the angle with your hand. It's not that hard. Just don’t' change the angle once you run the blade down the stone. I did have an issue with one of the extra fine stones. The stone did come with a micro abrasion that would chip the edge. They sent me a new stone in a day. All they asked was a picture of the stone for their quality control department. I would recommend this to anyone who owns any knives. The only knife that doesn't get razor sharp on the diamond stones are Swiss Army knives. Not sure why. So I just use the ceramic rod provided. That works great. It gets all of my knives shaving sharp. No reason to ever buy anything else. Great product. My dad just bought one also. He has tried all kinds of "easy" sharpeners and they all fail. I told him that this one is the real deal.

Embellishment to the Edges
Every now and then one has the opportunity to purchase an item that lives up to the hype of the advertising. I do not recall where I initially saw the advertising; however, I did go online later and was directed to the manufacturer's website (worksharptools.com) where I viewed the tutorial videos. I completed my purchase on Amazon.com. I bought the Work Sharp Guided Sharpening System (GSS) and a month later I bought the upgrade kit

Great, if you upgrade.
I bought this and the upgrade it because of the flat diamond plates. So far I've sharpened a few knives, chisels, and carving tools. Nice expensive ones and dirt cheap ones alike. This has got to be, hands down, my favorite sharpening system. I would recommend it highly. I plan on getting a couple extra leather strops for it and then using 3 grits of compound to get a sharp edge. The system is heavy which is nice to help prevent it sliding around. I keep it locked but it should work good either way. It's nice how there is also something to sharpen anything that curves inward, not a common tool. I also don't agree to use a higher angle on the leather, I use a slightly lower angle because the leather will curve to the edge. But it isn't a big deal.

Simply The Best Sharpening Systems for those who get out into the world...
I have the WGSS, the WSGFS22, and the Ken Onion Edition. All three systems, with all the accessories. I can truthfully say that for me, there are no better ways to sharpen any blades that I have... Quality, dependability, reliability- as well as superb customer service. I know of no other products that are guaranteed for 42 years... I've had lots of sharpening systems over the years, but nobody comes even close to Work Sharp. If you're serious about keeping your blades sharp, go Work Sharp. You won't be disappointed. Five Stars- only because Amazon won't let them have 10... Yes, I heartily endorse Work Sharp, and recommend their products to all...

This is a great sharpening solution!!!
The Work Sharp WSGSS knife sharpening system is the perfect tool for both the beginner and experienced individual that’s looking for a easy to use and very effective knife sharpening solution. The product is solidly built and well thought out, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. When I received it, the first thing I did was grab my oldest and dullest knife that I could find and then I followed the instruction which are included and within just 10 minutes the knife was sharp as it’s ever been. I was amazed at how easy it was to bring it back to life. Before I bought this system I carefully researched just about all the systems available and I selected this one because of the key features it offers and also the fact that they offer an upgrade system, for those whom want to take sharpening to the next level. I’ve already decided that I want the upgrade kit so I can properly care for my knifes without having to take them in to be sharpened. I’ve already sharpened all my kitchen knifes as well as my pocket and fixed blade knifes and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. I strongly recommend this product and I plan on buying several more to give out as gifts to some friends and my son, which I know will appreciate such a great and useful gift.

Awesome Versatility
I've owned the WSGSS with the Upgrade kit for nearly 4 years now and have sharpened over 100 knives with it (obviously many of those on a repeat basis). I've always been satisfied with it -- It can sharpen anything. Literally, it can sharpen everything from an axe to scissors to serrated knives, even fish hooks (although I've not used it for that). What made me come back after 4 years and write this review was how well it performed sharpening the CPM S110V steel on a new Spyderco PM2 I purchased as a B-Day present for myself. For those of you not familiar with this steel, it is a wonderful material -- highest corrosion resistant and the best edge retention you can get. However, it is supposed to be really hard to sharpen and it has gotten some criticism for toughness. I feared I would need to upgrade to something liked a Wicked Edge or KME to sharpen the S110V steel. Don't get me wrong, I think these are awesome systems, but they are $$$$$. Getting everything you want can put you well over $300 for the KME and over $500 for the Wicked Edge. What do you want -- More Awesome Knives or a Easier to use Sharpening System. So in a little over an hour today, I was able to re-profile my knife and sharpen it to a polished state that shaves hair like a barber. The factory edge was pretty sharp, but it barely shaved and had a very steep angle of 13 degrees per side. That is a severe angle, particularly for a steel that is a hard as S110V. More than half the time spent sharpening was re-profiling the 13 degree bevel to 17 with the Extra Coarse Diamond Plate. Would I have liked to have had a Super Coarse Diamond Plate -- Sure, but this did the trick. Then it was a cinch to work through the other three Diamond Plates and the Stropping Plate (again I have the Upgrade kit). The result is a polished, consistent edge that shaves hair, carves wood and cuts cardboard like there is no tomorrow. Many people would have stopped after the Coarse or Fine stones on this steel as a "Toothy" finish works better in some cutting chores and it eliminates the need to spend the time on the polished edge. However, wood cutting and food cutting do better with the polished edge and there is no getting around that it looks better too. So what would I buy if I didn't own the WSGSS already? Darn fine question. The answer depends on your bank account and needs. I REALLY want a higher end Wicked Sharp, however I'd rather buy more knives with what I saved with the WSGSS. If I sharpened for a living, or found myself having to sharpen a lot of knives every month, then I could justify the premium.

FOLLOW the instructions! & use dry
Used the sharpener for about three weeks. The ease of use has caused me to sharpen all of my knives. This is a buy again and gift item. It is an excellent tool which out performs all of the stones I have purchased over the years. You do not use oil or water but you use water with mild soap to remove the filings. You need to follow the outline for a successful result. I have not tried the optional sharpening kit cause I have not used it enough to form an opinion yet. It looks like like an axe/hatchet tool which looks as if it should be used by hand cause the extra grit on the dressing edge allows for dressing an abused edge back to health. The. Ceramic sharpening attachment adds the final paper cutting edge.

You Need the upgrade. Best thing out
This is a great product AFTER you buy the upgrade. It will do a decent edge with what is supplied at first purchase Edit; 4-16-2017 First, Let me say again, Get the upgrade to complete the set. It really makes all the difference if you want a truly Sharp blade. I have purchased several different sharpening systems throughout the years ranging from cheap to expensive. Sharpening my knives is something I love to do. I have Spyderco , Lansky , Smith and others. I even have the Ken Onion work sharp. They all are good systems depending on your skill level and what level of sharpness you are trying to achieve. I have had this system for a while now, so I think my review will be very accurate. This is what I use 99% of the time. My every day carry's are my Spyderco Stretch or my Spyderco Delica 4. Both of these knives have ZDP 189 steel which is a super hard ,high chromium steel. Very hard metal to sharpen but the edge retention is fantastic. This system works great on these knives letting me adjust angles or just fine tune the edges. With the upgrade which includes the leather strop, I rarely need to do more that just hone them back to scary sharp. If you are looking to get that Scary Sharp edge, This system can do it. This is a very forgiving sharpening system, and for me, very easy to learn and utilize. The steel plates are holding up nicely and I predict a very long life span. If you are a novice and want to learn how to sharpen a knife, This is a great place to start. I am totally satisfied with the purchase.

Good system
This is an economical way to get a great edge without the steep learning curve of water or oil stones. After some practice this will help you develop muscle memory which is handy for using stones. Start on an old knife and practice. Be sure to get the upgrade kit for re-profiling damaged knives and an extra fine diamond plate. The upgrade also has a leather strop which is invaluable for maintaining your edge without removing metal. You don’t need the ceramic rods if you use a strop. I wish they’d just included the extra course, extra fine, and leather strop in the basic kit and just skip the ceramic. Spend extra time with the course plate to ensure you have a good burr before using the finer grit, it will save you time and frustration. It’s a bit small for large kitchen knives but will work on them. If you get satisfaction from free hand sharpening, this is a great system.
