I had a 2012 Corolla with a stuck filter. Tried a cheaper version of the tool (the silver one that claims to be very strong). I spent over an hour trying to remove the filter canister with a breaker bar and it didn't budge. The cheaper tool eventually broke. To remove a very stuck filter: - Purchase this tool and a 27mm socket. Don't use the 3/8 drive to loosen. - Go for a drive and make sure your engine is warmed to normal temperature - Remove the pin that keeps the filter from spinning. - Try to loosen the filter before draining the oil. No point doing half an oil change if you still can't get it off. - Use the tool with a 1/2" drive with a 27mm socket. - If you are on your back, hold the tow hook with one arm and muscle the breaker bar with the other. - Success. Use a 3/8" drive ratchet to reinstall to a sensible torque.

VERY strong

Survived quite the test today - a 2013 Corolla with a VERY overtightened cap came in. I used a 1/2" drive 27mm socket on this tool, and a 36" breaker bar. The tool survived. The cap came off! Disaster averted! So this thing works on the smaller 4 cylinder Toyota engines. Prius, Corolla, and the Lexus CT200h. There's another tool needed for the 2.5L in the Camry and Rav4 and the V6 and V8 engines - but you can often use this one instead. If you're going to buy one or the other, get this. Remember - you HAVE to use a 27mm on the hex when loosening - using the 3/8" square drive is only for tightening.

I have only taken my Prius to the dealer since purchase because the original owner had the 100K/10year extended warranty on it that transferred to me. BIG MISTAKE! My dealer is worse than a backyard mechanic! I purchased this because I decided to do my own oil changes. After trying to remove the oil filter to no avail (afraid I would break it since the housing appears to be a plastic composite) got on youtube and found that this appears to be a problem some have run into. I had to use a breaker bar with extension to get the filter loose. I was really worried I would damage the filter or the block, but this wrench held up well and did the job! NOTE! MAKE SURE YOU PUT IT ON CORRECTLY THERE ARE 2 GROOVES IN IT I ASSUME FOR DIFFERENT VEHICLES. YOU WANT IT TO SIT FLUSH WITH THE LIP OF THE FILTER BEFORE PUTTING A LOT OF TORQUE ON IT.

Freaking fantastic oil filter tool for a 2013 Toyota Prius

Freaking fantastic oil filter tool for a 2013 Toyota Prius! The amazing strong wrench monkeys at my local Toyota dealer / service center cranked my filter on with all their might. In other words I had one heck of a time getting the filter off. But with this specific tool, I did it! It is made really well and definitely much better fitting than the previous plastic ones I have used in the past. Without those specialized notches / grooves on the base of the tool, I do not believe I could have obtained the necessary grip to wrestle the filter cap off. Great product and will keep forever as it looks like it's built that way. Can't go wrong!

Yup I can certainly verify it can remove an over tightened housing. Holy crap my mechanic had put it on so tight I don't know how it wasn't destroyed in the process. I broke a ratchet trying to get it off. I had to buy a 1 1/16 huge wrench from home depot to get enough leverage and even then bang it with a hammer to get it off. Worked perfectly though.

Solid Tool! Good Price!

Excellent Tool! Built strong, fits my 3/8" ratchet perfectly. Only problem I had, which is not the tool's fault, is that my 2016 Corolla S Plus is NOT using the cartridge based oil filter system. I have heard reports of this, but even the Toyota Parts guy handed me cartridge filter kits when I told him the year and model. The good news is this tool still fits the metal can filter, but it's slightly oversized for it and allows for a little too much play. Still though, it's a good tool to have I'm sure it will fit plenty other oil filter models. Another interesting note: The local Toyota Dealer wanted $40.00 for the exact same tool! Different branding but the same exact mold/design.

I have a 2014 Prius II. The "Oil Filer Wrench", which acts like a Spanner wrench because of the slots on its rim, will remove the black plastic oil filter cap that holds the paper filter (inside). JOB WARNING: When removing the oil filter cap,observe the plastic tabs on the oil filter cap that the tool keys/splines into. (The oil filter cap can be over tightened or over torqued by a Toyota dealership would be my guess). I had to used my foot/leg to kick the darn thing loose using a breaker bar. Just make sure it doesn't slip off and not be seated properly when you do this as I broke one of the tabs off by not seating the tool all the way in against the oil filter cap. The cap survived and I made sure I did not over torque the oil filter cap. Also, use floor jack to keep the car from falling and crushing you. Good Luck

A must have to do an oil change on a newer Toyota with this type of oil filter housing cap

I heard from a friend that this tool was an absolute must if I attempted to perform an oil change by myself on my mother's Prius. Sure enough he was correct. This special Oil Filter wrench fits into the grooves of the oil filter housing cap exactly as the original Toyota tool does and helps put enough torque on it to loosen the cap. I don't know why Toyota chose to make it so difficult for a person who perform oil changes on the newer Toyotas, but this tool solves the problem. While it's not cheap in comparison to other similar tools on the market, this one appears to be made from high quality metal and is unlikely to strip or crack apart like some others. Do your own search, but I suggest spending the $20 instead of going with the cheaper plastic alternatives. You'll thank yourself for buying a quality tool to get the job done down the road.

Very good tool lots of girp doesn't get stuck due to vacuum when oil gets in there, grabs the whole case very good and won't break ithe, took it to my shop now every body loves it

Excellent customer service

The socket worked really well. The vendor sent information to assist me with its proper use. They also provided torque information to help avoid over tightening the filter housing. The socket is 3/8 drive, but also has a male 1-1/16" male hex to use with a six point socket. The socket is aluminum. But, if you follow their directions you will have no problems.
