So far, this spreader has worked well for grass and other small seed. The dial is easy to use and I didn't experience any clogging. (Not sure how it would work for salt/melt but I purchased it for seed and/or granular fertilizer). I won't use it that much, just an occasional home user with a small yard, but it has worked well so far. The battery-operated nature is far superior to "hand crank" spreaders as it does not require both hands. One subtle benefit is that one can hold it in either hand while spreading, not generally possible with most crank spreaders. I am not sure how long the batteries would last but it worked fine for my needs. It has the "edge guard" feature, a simple lever which works to block seed from spreading out to the left side (meaning you need to walk clockwise around the perimeter of your lawn). One note on the batteries: It seems to take 3 AA batteries, which seemed not to be indicated in any of the specs or listings on Amazon or even on the Scotts website. (This would seem a nice thing to include). I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find the batteries included and already installed in the product (with one of those "pull here" paper isolator things to prevent accidental turning on while shipping. You do have to jiggle it back and forth a bit as the seed begins to deplete so that the remainder falls into the feed hole (perhaps a more "conical" design wouldn't need to do this, although that would presumably limit the capacity of the hopper or make the device unwieldy), but that's minor and not unheard of with these types of devices. The device comes almost ready to use (need to remove the battery isolator, mentioned above), with a promotional sticker applied to one side. I foolishly ripped this off (thinking it was just one of those glossy sales stickers) before noting it had the suggested dial settings for different types of seed/fertilizer/melt. So now I will have to glue it back on or otherwise not lose it so that the next time i use it I can know what the settings should be. (They also have this info posted on the Scotts website, I later found out). The price point was good (I guess it's a few dollars more than a crank spreader) but the ease of use makes it more than worth it. Note: I was NOT given the product or any other consideration in exchange for this review. .

I felt this was a risky purchase. Seemed to good to be true. For me, it worked extremely well, but just like almost all spreaders, if the granules are clumped, it will clog. It is so much easier than the typical handheld. I personally do not like the push machines. Too little control in tight spots. And the hand manual model is pretty tough on the arms if you have a large yard. This spreader is held like a suitcase. Sweet! Easy! I don't know how long the batteries will last. I did about 3000 square feet. Seemed just as strong finishing as starting. I removed a batteries until next use. You can control the width of the path and the amount distributed.

I have a small lawn with a lot of thin strips and step inclines, so a nice hand spreader was the obvious choice, and this spreader did a great job. It was easy to set up and use, and was much faster to apply my crabgrass pre emergent than I had expected. Application was relatively trouble free, and required little shaking to get it to dispense, although i did find that I needed to angle it slightly forward to keep the granules feeding perfectly. If you have a small, tricky lawn like I do, you will probably find this faster and easier to use than a push behind unit, and also a bit less expensive. likewise, it would probably be nice for tricky spots in larger yards, as well. My only issue is that if you don't use Scotts brand products finding out the right settings takes more research than I would like. Pros: -dial sped adjustment is much more precise than crank style spreaders -very well priced for all the features -easy to use -surprisingly fast to apply -edge guard is a handy feature -battery operation is great. -batteries are included. -easy to adjust -pretty comfortable and easy to hold Cons: -Made in China -I'd only rate he build quality about a 6.5/10. -trigger lock seems a bit difficult to use. -hard to find settings for non Scotts branded lawn products at this time.

I purchased this spreader to replace an absolute piece of garbage handheld Scotts spreader with a hand crank. Therefore, my expectations were fairly low that this would be of any better quality, considering all of these things are made in China. I was pleasantly surprised. I used it to spread about 15 pounds of insect killer granules. It worked like a charm, and is effortless to use. The batteries come pre-installed. Just pull the plastic tab from the battery compartment, which connects the batteries. Fill it up, set the dial, and pull the trigger. It shot the granules out in a nice spray pattern about 6 feet, which is better than the hand crank model I replaced. Durability is yet to be seen, as I only used it once. However, it looks promising so far.

I love this. I have a long driveway, but didn't want to go all in on a walk behind spreader because it seemed like overkill and the other hand spreaders require you to either shake your arm back and forth or use both hands and manually crank them. this one can be used one handed and I can just hold it by my side and it just does its job nice and evenly. My only issue is that sometimes when I release the trigger it doesn't stop so I just have to press and release it again and it stops. Overall though it's a minor bug and easy to get around. So far I have only used it for ice melt and it works great. I can't wait to try it this spring on my lawn. UPDATE I am happy to report that this spreader works just as well on grass seed. It was a breeze to spread seed in my backyard and did a nice even job!

Quick and to the point here. What I love about it: - I handles a large amount of fertilizer (or whatever material you are dispensing) which avoids constant filing up - It has a SUPER handy lock, which makes it very easy to use for extended periods of time - It comes ready out of the box (with batteries) - It spreads the material VERY evenly - It can take many different types and sizes of material What I don't like: - Battery life (fixed that by using two sets of rechargeable batteries) No brainer if you have a smaller yard and want an even spread of fertilizer Please let us know if this helps by clicking on the helpful button below and if you have a specific question about it post it here and I will be sure to answer it. Cheers

I've used this with granular fertilizer, insecticide, and fungicide. Spreads evenly every time. I love that I only have to just let it dangle from my hand and go for a brief walk around my yard. No gripping, no cranking. This makes it much easier on my old arthritic hands. And what used to take 40 minutes now takes about 10, including stops to refill the hopper. My only wish is that it had a lid or cover. Most of the granular lawn products need to be watered in right away, so I like to wait until clouds gather, and spread just before the rain hits. A couple of times, I've gotten caught in the rain before I was done (rain is sudden in Florida!). With no lid over the hopper, this means anything in there turns into a wet sticky mess if it gets wet. I ended up cutting and shaping a plastic cover cannibalized from an old spiral notebook so it fit (sort of) flat over the top of the hopper but under the handle, punched a hole on each side of my makeshift "lid" with a hole punch, and attached it with a mini-bungee cord strung around the bottom of the hopper. Crude but it worked to keep the hopper contents dry next time. If the hopper had a real lid, it sure would come in handy for those of us who need to spread stuff when it's raining or snowing.

I'm a golf course chem tech. I'm used to professional grade stuff. But now I'm a home owner with 2000 square feet of lawn to manage and I can't afford a $200 spreader. I'm also old and don't want to work hard. So I gave this 5 stars because it works. But you truly have to be an artist to not dump too much seed or fertilizer in one spot. I've used it now with 20 lbs of seed and 20 lbs of triple 16. It's a good tool but make sure to clean it or it won't work and don't expect professional results.

I just used this for the first time. It works fine. Batteries were still good at the end of the job. I have a very large yard and a bad leg so I fashioned a mount for the front of my zero-turn riding mower to avoid walking so much. The locking mechanism on the trigger switch allows me to turn it on and not have to hold the trigger down. See photo. Worked great.

I'm gonna go out and say I haven't seeded with it but I know it'll work just fine. I got this for salting my property. honestly, its gets hung up if I don't shake it while I use it. I'm not sure if its because my salt wasn't exactly dry (about 3 years old from having stocked up on it on sale years prior) its throws it evenly and is great for stairs and under vehicles. it gets all around just keep shaking it down. it got stuck open a few times when really big chunks fell through but you have to expect that. when your done it may be wise the run water through it to clean out that salt and let it sit for 24 hours upside down. the salt I use is Road Runner brand if that helps you visualize my product in anyway. anyway if your a business owner or property owner its a good buy you don't use less salt but the coverage is better and you don't have piles. you may find you use more or equal salt though because the spread is so even. cant wait to seed with it this spring I wouldn't fertilize with it though. being the green freak I am I don't feel its precise that way. no throw lines unless you keep you hand and arm stiff to your body the while time... ill just use my ground spreader
