So far so good
I purchased 2 of the new X300 4TB drives and am very happy with them so far. They are much quieter than the older Toshiba PH models...and waaaay quieter than Seagate's. Performance wise, these are probably the fastest 4TB drives out there right now (That's including the new WD Blacks). Mine both came sealed and very well packaged (I ordered mine directly from Amazon).

34 days and a SMART FAIL , Replaced FAST, all good
What the hell Toshiba. Your QA is slipping. This is my 3rd drive under your brand and the biggest @ 10TB. 34 days and 19 hours of power on time. Failure Predicted - Attribute: 7 Seek Error Rate, Rate of positioning errors of the read/write heads. Indicate problem with servo, head. High temperature can also cause this problem. Replace hard disk immediately. It is recommended to backup immediately to prevent data loss. I had to disable smart checking in BIOS to get back into windows. Now Im scrambling to get all all my movies off this drive before I lose her. :( C'mon guys , do BETTER! UPDATE - 7-23-2019. They replaced this drive 48 hours after failure. The replacement is doing great!

This HDD is killer for the price.
I would love to justigy buying a dozen of these to build an array at home where I can store everything digital till my hearts content. I tossed this into my Linux system and it has run 24/7 since then. Transfer speeds are right on when connected to the SATAII Bus. I have a USB bandwidth funnel somewhere because all of my usb transfers are slow regardless of drive. Truth be told I can't tell this is any slower or any faster than my 128 GB SDD that Ubuntu sits on. When pulling files from the drive it can take a little time to move movies and large data around but read speeds are great and write doesn't suck. I'd buy this again and again especially since some time has passed and it has proven reliable. I was a WD Blue guy but I like these. If you are a data horder like me and have TB's of music and video then this drive might be good for you too. That's what I do with it. I put all my new downloads there and system backups from the SSD. Everything else is then backed up in a second location too, either the cloud or in myCloud. But great drive for the money and I haven't had an issue or complaint. I do keep a lot of cooling in my tower and that helps the HDD's from burning up. Recycled server fans go a long way in an old gaming box.

Temperature is important. This drive runs colder than (most) others
edit.... these are 2 reviews.. the 1st one is for the 1TB 7200rpm model, the 2nd was for the 5tb version. these are quiet. I can hear when they're under load in a silent room, but they don't get louder than 40db...maybe 50dbs. I do have a decible meter on my phone and checked that it is very quiet.... silent when im in normal operation. My system usually runs at 0% to 8% when watching tv or a video (linux can do this) they are capable of raid, and i set them up over a logical volume with another sdd, totally 3hdds they came in red retail boxes, and were factory sealed. they were both manufactured in Jan 2017, and had zero run-hours on them. I may buy a few more before they stop selling them, just for a backup, but maybe next time I need them, there will be another huge advancement, and / or price drop, but for (i spent 49 on the 1tb) price, I am quite pleased. 5TB version (slightly noisy, a little crunching or grinding. New grinding so it doesn't sound half as bad as seagates but still a bit noisy) I really like this drive. I bought it locally, b/c i needed it today but am writing a review b/c I had concerns about heat and sound. after toying with bios and installing a new OS, and ensuring the drive was good I ran a smartctrl on it. the results are in the pix, as with a Temperature reading of no more than 81.1f (that's just over room temperature!). it does run cooler than my older drives by 19 degrees, and that is huge b/c heat has a direct correlation between HD failure(s) and errors... if yours are running hot, put a small case fan on them... well, this drive is brand spanking new (1 hour on it sofar) and runs cool. it also has a cover plate (that some brands don't have) that (supposedly) helps with noise. However, there isn't a plate on the bottom, although it is quieter than my older drives (which are about 5 years now and need replacing) only time will tell if it begins crunching or making arm noises.. Sofar it's going great. I've learned that Seagate recently bought out many other companies, (including hgst) and Toshiba is still itself, as in Toshiba still makes their own Hard Drives...also Toshiba is one of the best brands (as hgst (hitachi) was, with very low failure rates)... of all my drives that failed, Seagate has always been the worst, and failed the most.... my current (old) setup is Seagate and WD... the Seagate one is failing, and has errors, while the wd is going ok... I'm glad I got this new drive to take over (and 5 times as much capacity too). summary: I'm glad I got this when I did and may buy another for a backup. My "store-bought" version was only the drive in a printed toshiba box... in 2 halves of bubblewrap inside the box and a paper slip... no screws or cable... Most hard drives come this way now. 5tb drive firmware: ver. fp2a Power On Hours : 0 (pic shows 1, which is from me using it)

Fast as my FireCuda was at its fastest and 5tbs instead of 2 for just 25 more bucks.
My FireCuda 3.5 2tb was much louder than this is. This thing purrs like a kitten I can’t believe anyone ever complained about the noise level. I also noticed that the FireCuda was a lot slower when it didn’t use the Flash Memory. And this one is always able to reach that high speed with no help and you can’t really hear it unless it needs to go that fast. I’ve had three FireCuda’s. I’m sure this is far better than the FireCuda which should have used a better mechanical hard drive and more flash memory to take the lead and even bury the competition which they didn’t do with FireCuda. Even the price comparison isn’t better. The X300 gives you more space and the ability to reach the same speeds no matter what file you choose to use right now. I am writing this later on as an update and I have to say after over a month with it. It has become very silent. Even less noise than before. The reason for this is that it has to break itself in. So at first. For like a week or two. It may have its moments when you hear it being loud. Even then it was less loud than my last three Firecudas but has now become even more silent. I never hear it anymore. It doesn’t disturb my sleep. I’m getting an Xbox One X with a SSD inside of it tomorrow. So it will be even less loud then when I use the 1tb inside of it that I bought. I can’t believe how much noise it makes. It makes no noise. No disturbing loud noise at all. Just some small little clicks and noises. For a mechanical. It’s very silent.

Great Drive for Archiving and Backups; 7200 RPM, 128MB cache, Huge Size ... A Definite Thumbs-Up.
I bought this drive just over a month ago as I write this, so this review is not as authoritative as one I would write 3 or 5 years from now. After all, isn't the long-term reliability of a hard drive its most important factor? I mounted this drive into an external hard drive (hot-swappable) dock, and connected it to my Windows computer via USB3. It was very easy to set up and format, like any other brand new hard drive. Because of its size, it took several hours to perform the initial format. Because I am now making lots of videos (2-hour concert recordings edited into 14 or 15 individual songs for posting online; individual tutorial videos) and videos take up massive amounts of space, I needed a huge hard drive on which to store my archive files from video producing, and a place to store primary hard drive backups. This drive was just the ticket. With its USB 3.0 connection, it is as fast as any disk-based hard drive would be, with a 7200 RPM speed and a 128 MB cache. Finally, difference in price (currently $26 difference as I write this) between 4TB and 5TB made it a no-brainer to opt for the extra TB. As of this writing, this Toshiba 5TB hard drive is performing flawlessly, and I have no complaints.

Favorite drives
I have a 3TB, 4TB (this), 5TB, and 2 128GB Toshiba drives and i have really loved them all to the point where i seek out Toshiba hard drives specifically not to mention this drive was the best price/performance buy at the time of purchase. I use the hard drives for media storage so nothing crazy, mainly store movies, shows, music and then watch from the disk. I get around ~150MB/s between the drives in real world transfers however the drive does reach >170MB/s in benchmarks. This drive is quiet, runs cool (with sufficient airflow), is fast for my needs and is an excellent value. I go to Samsung for SSD's but for hard drives Toshiba are the go to for me. No drive is guaranteed reliable that is why is absolutely prudent to back up your important data, but i have had excellent reliability with Toshiba drives compared to some previous drives i've had from Seagate.

A great drive for games and storage of lots of multimedia!
It works amazingly and is nice and huge... I'm a big gamer and I still have not filled its functional capacity after this long (it's best to always leave 15% of the total capacity of a magnetic hard disk partition free to allow for defragmentation, and that's around 500GB for a 4TB drive). It's a LITTLE noisy compared to my old SSHD,

Big ol' Hard Drive
I generally only buy Western Digital drives, but this drive had pretty good reviews so I went with it. This thing is great so far after about a month of using it. It's quiet, responsive, and with fairly good speeds. Only complaint I have is that the power and sata cable connections on the drive are way too close to each other. After putting the power connector on, I could barely get the sata connector to fit in it's spot. In fact, the first sata cable I tried cracked on the top edge. I had to use an older sata cable, one without a clip on it to get it to fit. Other than that, I've been real happy with this drive.

Great Speed - Great Value - Great HDD
This review is for the 5TB version of the Toshiba 7200 RPM X300 Performance Gaming HDD. After one week of use, I am extremely happy with this drive. Although a lot of reviewers have mentioned that it can be intrusively noisy, my experience so far is that it is not particularly noisier then my WD Blue HDD. Maybe someone can test this HDD against others using a decibel meter so we can have some hard facts to work with. What is a fact is that this drive is seriously fast for a consumer level HDD and can store almost 5TBs of data for well under $150. This is the bargain HDD drive you've been looking for that can and does deliver premium quality performance. I'll update this review with some speed comparisons between the Toshiba X300 and the WD Blue so you can get a feel for how much faster the Toshiba is. Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that while this is a fast drive for an HDD, it is almost laughably slow when compared to an SSD, or even worse, an M.2 SSD. However, what you are trading for a lot less speed is a LOT more storage for a LOT less money. This is the perfect companion for a rig using an SSD to hold the OS and some key apps and the X300 for games, photos, videos and pretty much everything else. I'm glad I bought one and I think you will be too!
