Love, love, love this machine! It's strong, it's precise, it quilts beautifully, the bobbin winder is great, and I can use my magnetic super light on it. If this machine had zigzag capability it would be The Perfect Machine. However, the cover is only good as a dustcover. I wish there was a hard case for carrying and storage.

Definitely the right choice of sewing machine. The large area throat plate makes it much easier to sew large quilts. My little brother sewing machine I just use for appliqué projects since big brother only has the straight stitch. The needle does unthread often (I think the thread cutter cuts a bit short.). The needle threader on this machine I have never been able to master yet. The one on my little machine is simple. Other than that, this sewing machine is great. Oh, one more thing, you can't tell when your bobbin is low on thread. I'm glad I chose this sewing machine.

I bought this machine after doing a lot of research. I was looking for a quality and powerful straight stitch machine. I didn’t have room to invest in a industrial machine with a table so I started looking for a portable one. I know that this brother pq1500sl is designed as a quilting sewing machine. However I did not buy it for that purpose. I make bags and purses. I have constructed several using this machine. I use fabric and faux leather. I invested in a straight stitch Teflon foot for this type of sewing. I use a larger needle and heavy thread and have had no problems what so ever. I took my time and practiced a lot to get the tension right. Sews like a dream! The needle down function is awesome and so is the knee lift bar!!! I absolutely love these features. I Think this machine is well worth the money for me. I also checked out the Juki similar model. They were more money for basically the same type of machine. I have nothing against the juki but for me the brother was a better fit. I sew just about everyday and this machine is the one I use now more than my other machines. With regular maintenance it should last a very long time.

I purchased this machine to be used exclusively for free motion quilting. I did a lot of research, and yes, there were some really bad reviews, but way more good reviews. I've had really good luck with Brother machines, and this machine had more of the features I needed for the setup I was creating so I decided to go for it. I'm pretty machine savvy and no, it did not work perfectly when I took it out of the box, it was doing a lot of looping on the underside. But once I adjusted the tension on the bobbin (which was WAY off), adjusted the presser foot pressure (the color guide adjustment window made it super easy) and the thread tension dial - and got all 3 in sync, which just took a little time and patience, the stitches were perfect! I then dropped the feed dogs, there's a dial that also makes this function super easy, readjusted my presser foot pressure using the color guide window, again super easy, and started practicing free motion quilting and the result is all I'd hoped for. Two of the features I really like on this machine is the location of the bobbin casing, which is on the side of the machine vs the top or the front. The machine is facing me when I free motion quilt, so the bobbin casing is facing me which makes it really easy to change bobbins when I need to. Also, when you do the type of sewing I do on this machine, it must be oiled frequently. You do not have to take the machine apart to oil it, there are small oil "holes" on the machine where you put in drops of oil as needed. For someone who is used to taking a machine apart to oil it, this is a little bit of heaven!! I was having a small issue with the automatic thread cutter. It was cutting the threads so short that I was losing my bobbin thread and had to bring it back up after using the cutter. Not a big deal but annoying. Then I discovered that I didn't need to pull up the bobbin thread, I could start sewing again and the bobbin thread would come up and continue stitching just fine. I only need to pull it up if I want to bring it up to the top of the fabric before I begin stitching again. One thing about Brother, they have good tech support, so be sure and register your machine with them to take full advantage of their services.

I am a very novice sewer and I got this machine to do quilting. I have not taken a sewing class yet, and have taken only 2 quilting classes just so you know.I have only made napkins before... I got this machine just 2 days ago and love the features. I have used an $800 Husqvarna (spelling?) in class and like this so much better. I think it is very intuitive, easy to thread, love the knee presser foot lever and the reverse which is so easy. The bobbin winder was easy and I used it right out of the box. Getting the bobbin seated correctly was a little challenge but it just took practice. You need to make sure it "clicks" in. I am working on the automatic needle threader and I get it threaded about 15% of the time but have only tried this feature for about 20 minutes and I am getting the feel of it, having never used an automatic threader before. I also love the "thread cutter" button! Goodbye scissors! Only negative so far is that I bought the cheap thread on the large cone for about $4 and I kept getting nests of thread underneath the material. This went on for two hours even though they had sent a piece of material with perfect stitching. I changed the needle, the tension, the feed dog height and finally the thread. That was what did it. I went to a smaller spool. After having read other reviews, I am going to try the cheaper thread again but thread it over one and then three holes on the front of the machine (I have it now threaded with two holes) to see if that makes a difference. I think most would be very happy with the machine and if I can use it, anyone can! Update- I have had this machine for about a month and am still extremely pleased! I have figured out the needle threader, although it doesn't work as well on the cheaper threads it does work well with the smaller spool threads. I did run out of bobbin thread once and it would be nice to be able to see the bobbin, but that is a very minor issue. I still feel this machine is very intuitive and easy to thread and use and I am getting close to finishing my first quilt with it. Update: I’ve now had this machine for 6 months and STILL love it! I am more experienced now (having completed 2 quilts and a 4 piece quilted placemat set) and only find that the thread cutter leaves it a bit short ( but don’t usually have to retread) and the needle threader is a little difficult. But the positives outweigh the negatives and you can get this machine for about $60-100 less than what I paid. Highly recommend!!!

Edit: The auto thread cutter works perfectly if you raise the pressure foot beforehand. I am thrilled with this machine! So easy to piece and quilt. The motor is strong, the stitches are even (regardless of how fast you sew), and the extension table is very convenient. The only issue I had with it was a tendency for the automatic thread cutter to snip the needle thread too short, so that it pulled out and I had to re-thread before I could stitch. I learned that if the thread coming off the spool is not slack, that causes the situation, so I simply reach up and pull it out a little and then it cuts automatically with no problem. I read on one of these reviews about how the bobbin holds less thread than some other machines. That's true, but the automatic thread cutter prevents waste when it snips the thread only about an inch. I have had no trouble whatsoever with running out of bobbin thread prematurely. The throat is approximately 8-3/4 inches wide and accommodates large quilts with ease. Of course, it's not a long-arm quilting machine, but it doesn't cost a fortune, either.

This machine is a little powerhouse. I have had mine for five years now and it still works like the day I got it. I have a Singer featherweight and a small Janome that I use for mending and small sewing projects, but I use this one for quilting and piecing and it has never let me down. I have made table runners and queen size quilts with all over free motions quilting and it does the job beautifully. For the price, this machine cannot be beaten. No bells or whistles on this, but I’ve not found that I’ve needed either. Happy sewing!

It was a bit of a learning process to thread it. It's completely different than any other machine I've used. I still haven't figured out the needle threader. I'll have to check YouTube for that. It sewed perfectly right off the bat. I had read about some tension problems...none here. I have another Brother sewing machine that has all the fancy stitches, but I wanted something more heavy duty for quilting. I can't believe the difference in the weight of the attachments. These are so much heavier. I also love the amount of room between the needle and the housing. I was having trouble fitting my hands and the quilting sandwich in my other machine. Not a problem with this machine. There is a large work area. Very pleased so far!

Unbelievably good deal on Amazon. I ordered yesterday when price was the lowest I’ve ever seen. I received it today! I have been sewing and free motion quilting on it all day. It’s an amazing industrial straight stitch machine. I have plenty of fluffy top of the line machines but the pq1500 SL is the best for straight line and free motion quilting. It’s all I need coupled with my serger from now on! Amazing machine. Oh, if you want this machine you need to keep checking on Amazon as the price fluctuates. Once I saw it drop real low.....I pounced and bought it :)

I was looking for a machine for quilting and didn't need all the computerized embroidery stitches. I ma so glad to have found this machine. I love how it sews. It is quiet. It is very easy to thread and use. I am still getting used to the knee lever to move the pressure foot up but love it when I remember, especially when pivoting. Love the thread cutter - that will always have to be a must for any new machine for me! I have already made a couple of small quilts and am raring to make more. I highly recommend. I have now had this machine for a few months and really am happy overall. It is very easy to use and adjust the tension threads when free motion quilting. I love that the bobbins hold a lot of thread so I am not having to change them so often when quilting. I have not yet gotten the hang of the needle threader and wish the eye of the needle was facing forward to make it easier for me to do by hand. I also would prefer the bobbin case facing front instead of the side . Those are really my only "complaints". Otherwise, it is has been a terrific purchase and I highly recommend.
