So. Much. Fun!
UPDATE 8/8/17: For all of the negative reviews and "1-stars", CONTACT THE COMPANY before you slam the product. I wish ALL companies had the customer service this company has! And NO, this drone is not for kids as a first time drone. It is WAY too agile. Get your child a drone DESIGNED for children. Bottom line up front, if you are looking for a tiny quad to start playing with, this one is AWESOME. I love it! Especially for the price! Take that for what it's worth from a first time user. That said, read on! First, I am a brand new "drone" user. I loathe the term "drone"... In the military, drones are targets, not systems. I imagine this thing would be classified as a micro UAS. I'll probably just refer to it as a quad as I've seen it referred to online. Second, I'm also a retired Army pilot (helo and fixed-wing), and this thing is kicking my butt! I am still not able to make a coordinated turn flying it around, but I get it out daily so should hopefully master this before too long. Or at least not look like such a rookie! :) Despite my frustrations with my lack of flying ability, this thing is a lot of fun! I picked this quad up along with another Holy Stone (HS 181W if I recall correctly) due to the amazing customer service comments in the reviews. Note: If you are one of those knuckleheads who writes a poor review WITHOUT contacting Holy Stone first, shame on you. If you get poor customer service despite doing all of the right things (being a jerk when you contact them is not considered "doing all the right things"), then a poor review might be justified. Basically, give them a chance to fix anything before you review / comment. Any company out there deserves the chance to make it right before you pass judgement. I had some initial problems with one of the white props constantly sailing off into space every time I lifted off if I didn't just smash it down onto the motor shaft. I even swapped it out and had the same problem leading me to believe I might need to get a new motor. I finally swapped on a good tight-fitting prop, and haven't had a prop come off except in the more serious "hard landings". I now have two spares that are worthless, but I will contact HS about that. Fortunately I did order the separate prop package so I have quite a few spares. I also ordered two spare batteries and the Holy Stone 5 in 1 Max 2.5A Current Input Fast Battery Charger, which makes getting in a good bit of flying a lot easier! For those new to this sport / hobby, there are some things to understand about this quad. First, READ THE MANUAL. Second, this thing is LIGHTWEIGHT. The slightest breeze does affect its flight profile. I live in the desert southwest and we are in monsoon seasons so the wind is quite unpredictable at times. I also have a couple hundred quad-eating mesquite trees on my property making flights a bit more tricky if the breezes pick up. Lastly, you should probably understand frequency spectrum issues and understand that our modern society has a PACKED frequency spectrum, many of which can interfere with these small UAS. Personally, I am also fortunate to live well outside town so I don't have any real signal interference that could possibly lead to a fly-away or catastrophic crash. All of my accidents so far have been pilot error. In the end, this is a tremendously fun little quadcopter. No regrets whatsoever! I'd easily buy it again. In fact, I just ordered 2 more batteries! Once I get somewhat proficient at this thing, I'll try out the 181W.

READ THIS...Great drone...but there is a design flaw in the battery compartment
First off, I’d like to say I really love this drone. I got it as a Christmas present so I have had it for almost a month. Within the first week I flew it everyday and even invested in 6 extra batteries and a carrying case to keep it protected. I haven’t had any big crashes yet but the durability seems good, the 3 option speed control is great, (beginner, intermediate, FAST), it’s great indoors and outdoors, and overall it’s just a great drone. However, the one thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the design of the battery compartment. I realize that the battery needs to be snug so that when flying it doesn’t come out. It would be fine how it is but the problem is the red and black wire connected to the control board that you use to connect the battery is right at the front of the battery slot, and each time you carefully place the battery into the drone it causes stress on these wires. After 3 weeks of use I just noticed today in fact that the soldered part where the black wire meets the internal board is starting to disconnect. If there is 10 tiny wires connected in each the red and black wire, then 2/10 in the black wire have completely separated and now I’m beginning to worry how long it’ll last. If I knew how to solder I’m sure it wouldn’t be a hard fix, but I don’t have the necessary tools nor do I know how to do that. If Holy Stone would upgrade this design in the future and made it to where there was a notch cut out in the back of the shell, there would be a place for the red and black wire to sit and not get continuous contact when putting in and taking out the battery. Overall, I still really like this drone and it was fun while it lasted, but it is frustrating that I invested $40 buying the drone, another $20 for extra batteries and a charger, and another $20 for the case. If it wasn’t for the case of the wire situation then I would give this drone 5 stars. Holy Stone, if you would send a replacement I would be an extremely happy customer and most certainly would buy again from you guys in the future. Despite the whole wire issue, I really love this drone and even convinced my younger brother to buy one as well and we had hours of fun on Christmas break flying our drones. UPDATE: Above is my initial review I posted after have the drone for a few weeks. I wont repeat anything I said before, as it can be read above. Since my review, Holy Stone contacted me and offered to replace my drone which I was very pleased about. My initial rating was 3 star because of the wires coming apart but I updated my rating to 5 Star simply because of Holy Stone’s Customer Service. There was no hassling involved nor endless emails back and forth; it was a simple email saying they would like to replace my drone and send out another one and hoped that I would have a better experience. Thanks Holy Stone for being a stand up company!! I will buy from you in the future!

Blown away by the quality of this drone
Whoa, I am blown out with the quality of this little drone at such a good price. Hard to beat. In the video I demo this drone in action using the eagle pro helipad and hoops. Hoops - Drone Racing Obstacle Course. Easy to Build Racing Drone Kit. Create Your Own Drone Racing League. Suitable Drone Games for Kid or Adults (Amazon Exclusive) Helipad - Remote Control Helicopter Landing Pad - Complete Edition - Flashing LED Lights Installed - Suitable for RC Helicopters, Quadcopters, Drones, Syma Helicopters Pros - Has a great little USB charger, makes it very easy to charge and you dont have those long USB wires lying around everywhere. - Super stable. It took a few clicks of the trim and it was basically hovering handsfree on its first flight - Customer service seems to be on point. Whilst I haven't needed to contact them, I have their details and it seems easy to do so if needed. - Propguards - saved me for sure. Cons: - It gets affected by wind, so you need to wait for a still day to fly outside. - The beeping!! I didnt read the manual, which explains how to prep it for flight and then the beeping stops. Never the less, that beeping is damn annoying. - Remote was a bit hard to figure out all the buttons and remember them, especially mid flight. Sure they are in the manual but it would be nice if they had some little symbols on the controller. Overall this is a great little quad for the price

Excellent first Drone, highly recommended. Follow the start up sequence and trim the drone.
My 11 year old daughter received this as a Christmas present from me, her Dad. She loves it! We've only had it for about 3 full days and we have put at least a dozen flights on it. It has had a few crash landings and no problems whatsoever. However, you need to follow the instructions on start up. Turn the transmitter on first, then plug in the hs170 drone, run the throttle from low to high then back to low. Then, you are ready to go. Perform little hops initially and use the trim buttons to trim the hs170 before each flight. Although it's not perfect at holding hover, we can get it to stay in one spot with very minor drifting. I, too, have had fun flying the little drone around the house; we may need to get another just so we can both fly at the same time.

Highly recommend as a starter drone or a fun mini-sized addition to your collection
I’ve spent over 40 hours researching drones in the marketplace over the past few months. When I came across this one, I was skeptical whether or not a mini-drone would have the performance characteristics I was looking for in a drone. I’m an intermediate flyer and own 2 drones as a hobbyist. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the HS170 Predator. It brought a smile on my face from the very first flight. It is very fun to fly, and has the performance and capability of upper-end drones on the market today. Fun Factor: The sound of this drone just makes you smile. It sounds like a swarm of bees, and of course has the frame structure to match; but not loud like some drones. The 3 speed modes allows increasing tilt of the copter which increases speed and turning ability. So quick is level 3 that this little guy can dart off in a direction fast enough to catch you off guard if you’re not paying attention! Which brings me to my next test result, durability. Durability: Yeap, I crashed it.. several times in fact on various surfaces wood, grass, walls, and carpeting. The landing gear is unique in that it absorbs impact and flexes more than most. This produces a spring effect that that dissipates the force of hard landings without snapping off. The props are very durable and easy to replace, they just push on. I have yet to damage a prop or the copter after all I've put it through. Functions: Return to Home, Flips, and Headless mode all function as advertised. It performs flips particularly well due to its size, and power. It doesn’t lose altitude like some drones when performing stunts. Response time for return to home is instant, and causes the copter to fly in your direction, but you must be ready to reassume control when it gets close. I had to duck once when I first tested this! Battery life is as expected; about 5 minutes of fun per charge. Note that the battery charger is quick; 90 minutes or so charge will get you back up and flying. The user guide is clear and detailed. The controller functions as expected with no noticeable delay or lag between sending a command and responsiveness of the drone. Conclusion: The HS170 is a well built and good performing drone. Highly recommend as a starter drone or a fun mini-sized addition to your collection that is fun to fly indoors or out. I wish I had started with this drone to learn the basic of drone piloting. Once you’ve mastered controlling the HS170 in high performance mode, you should have confidence piloting any other.

Really cool drone, now I have a free controllable replacement.
I just received a brand new HS170. The right front motor is bad. I does not spin up with the other motors. It starts late and makes it uncontrollable. I did just contact Holy Stone and they said they would give me a new motor which I can install myself. OK, I've seen the video and I can do that easily enough. But I will have to wait until this happens and I can fly it properly. Then I will edit this review. Edit: I found out it wasn't the motor. I decided to try zeroing the gyros and and it works. But I do find it difficult to control. It can't keep a steady height. As soon as I move it any direction (only a little bit too) it suddenly wants to rise too fast, and when I back off it sinks too fast. I am indoors right now and I have seen videos of it indoors but I sure can't get smooth control over it. I found I had to play with the trim a lot too to try to keep it from drifting too much. I suppose I'll have better luck outdoors without the walls or ceiling to hit, but it still is difficult to control. Edit: Holy Stone is trying to help me out so far. But I find this drone is pretty uncontrollable. As soon as I give it a directional command (right stick) it just starts climbing too, outdoors it must have went over 30 feet high. So I lower the throttle slowly to bring it down and then when it finally starts descending it comes down quickly and I have to raise the throttle back up so it doesn't fall to the ground. I was really looking forward to having fun with this drone but it's an effort to just try to get it do fly around in any direction. It can't keep a steady altitude. Sure , I know it doesn't have altitude control but it shouldn't climb or descend like crazy when I just try to make it go right/left/fwd/back. Even just moving the Yaw control it starts to descend. Edit: Holy Stone is giving me another HS170 at no cost. I just hope that this replacement unit works properly. Because I don't see how anyone can fly it the way it responds. It just can't be that hard to fly a drone, especially if it's a beginner level drone. The first drone I ever flew (TDR Sky Beetle, same as their HS190 drone was easy to get the hang of. This one should be just as easy, not a struggle just to try to hover and move it around a little bit. Hopefully it's just this unit, maybe it's a bad motherboard, the gyros, or something. But Holy Stone has been very good in trying to remedy this situation. Edit: I just got the replacement from Holy Stone at no charge. This one works. It is controllable. I do have to get the feel of flying it as this is only the 2nd drone I have ever flown. One thing about the props, they're brittle and break easily in spite of having prop guards. I broke the two front props on the faulty unit and I just broke a prop on the new one. I have to fly it in more open areas where there's nothing to hit until I become more proficient at it. So I now have a set of spare motors that was sent to me plus I can keep the faulty unit for spare parts except the mother board, that's what's faulty. So Holy Stone has great customer service! I went from 1 star to 4, can't give a 5 because of the 1st unit. Final Edit: I've had the replacement unit for a while now. So I did a little experiment with the original faulty drone. I used the radio Tx from the replacement drone on the faulty drone and it works perfectly. So the problem was not the drone itself but the radio Tx that it came with. Thank you Holy Stone for helping me to get a working drone! Upgraded to 5 stars. Also I should add that I have been flying it a lot and improving my skills. This is a very responsive drone and can fly pretty fast at the expert level although I am mostly sticking to the mid level right now.

READ THIS OR YOU'LL THINK IT'S CRAPPY!
READ THIS TO CLARIFY BAD REVIEWS!!!! I just recently got my HS170, and at first I thought the same thing that everyone else states in their one-star reviews. It was lurching forward unless I pulled back on the controller and I was super annoyed thinking it was a crappy product. READ THE MANUAL!! When you first get ready to fly, before taking off, pull both sticks on the controller towards you and to the left until the beep stops. Your drone will fly nearly perfect. If you still need to do some adjustments (which will be very minor), use the "trim" buttons that are near the right stick. These buttons will ever so slightly tilt the drone front/back or left/right until you've got it hovering. Holy Stone is also a great company. When I got my drone, it flew itself into a wall within the first couple minutes of flying (because I didn't know I had to calibrate the gyro (what I talked about above)) and one of the motors got all screwy. I wrote them with hopes that they would maybe send a new motor to replace that one, and they wrote back in a few hours saying "We'll send you a new drone. No need to send in the old one, you can keep that one for spare parts!" Good company and before you get your undies in a bunch, do the two things I said in the first paragraph. You'll be happy with it.

Great starter quadcopter!
After my son in law put a bug in my ear about drones and quadcopters I decided to buy myself a toy for Christmas. I tend to do a lot of research when I buy things, and this was no exception. I read a lot of reviews and watched a lot of vids of not only the HS170, but models from Hubsan, Syma etc. I new I wanted something small but larger than a nano that I could fly indoors and after I was comfortable, purchase something larger. One thing that I did get from watching vids was to learn to fly manually. There are many models out there that have gps, altitude hold, headless mode, and can pretty much fly themselves, but if you for some reason loose gps or some other issue and don't know how to fly without it your 400.00+ drone is going to crash. I found the HS170 to be a great starter quadcopter, coming with everything you need to fly (Except 6 aa batteries for the controller). It does have headless mode, 6 axis gyro, 3speed rates and does flips. I did order 2 extra batteries, a multi-charger, spare set of motors, and a DIY case. So far I have found no need for extra blades, although it did come with a set. The prop guards extend just above the props to keep them from hitting the ceiling(which I spent a lot of time on until I figured out the throttle). I did have to move the props to the correct positions when I first received the quadcopter(read the manual). The only issue I have had so far is the throttle stem snapped off. I decided to email Holy Stone and ask about repair parts or replacement. The next morning I received a reply asking for my order# and shipping info so the could send a replacement. Customer service doesn't get better than that! So far I am very satisfied with my purchase and wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

The little guy
This little guy is great! Delivery was super fast and the packaging was perfect. When u open the box everything is there and already put together. There are some extra parts included, buy that only bummer is that the batteries for the remote were not included. And u need 6 of them! The cords from the battery to the drone are on the back of the drone and when you connect them to turn the drone on make sure you pull them back down a little bit, otherwise they get caught in the propellers when u start to fly. I was surprised how little he was when I took it out of the box. It's maybe 6 inches across. It can sit in the palm of my hand. Even tho it's so small the flight time is still only 6 minutes with a full battery. There's no camera on him, so no pictures or videos, but it can do flips! It flies very well and is super responsive. It has lights so i can see it at night and it has headless mode and one key return. Pretty cool for this tiny drone. The only thing I don't like about it is that it does not have altitude control. So when you're flying you have to keep adjusting it up and down to keep it at the altitude you want. So it kinda looks like it's bouncing in the air. Definately hard to get it to hover in one place, or to stay at one height when your flying. It's a little frustrating. But other than that it's great! And it does have 3 different speeds so u can get comfortable flying. The remote is easy to use and easy to pair with the drone. The users manual tells u what all the buttons do, but they aren't written next to the buttons like the other drone remotes. Overall this drone is great. I prefer the ones with altitude control and cameras, but for a little drone to learn on this is perfect! Thank you, Holy Stone, keep up the good work!
