Bought for 6 year old granddaughter who totally loved it. Her dad had to crack the rocks but she was right there handing him the hammer and picking up the crystallized geodes. They were very pretty. Several were solid rocks. I called the customer service line because there was a card in the box encouraging you to if you weren't 100% satisified. I spoke with the best customer service person ever!!! Had replacement geodes in less than a week...the 6 year old actually got a total of 3 National Georgraphic products for Christmas and all of them were of good quality and fun for the child. Great learning products.

Worth every penny!!!
I ordered this along with another company's pack of geodes for a homeschool science lab. There was no comparison! This pack had HUGE geodes that were amazingly beautiful when the children broke them open. It was such a great way to end our lesson on volcanos and these geodes impressed on their minds the amazing power of our wonderful planet. Everyone was happy with their geodes and were especially happy to take home their newly acquired gems from the earth!

As good as I hoped and more.
I've been buying some geodes the last couple of weeks to see what I could crack open. I find geology very fascinating, and have some more precious natural stones and thought this is a fun, cheaper alternative. When the items first came in and I saw the stones I was very sceptical about what I just bought. There were 4 quite small stones 4 small to medium sized stones and 2 fairly large stones. So I cracked the small stones open first using a hammer and chisel and was very surprised about how stunning the insides turned out to be. I figured the small stones wouldn't be much and I got a bad bag, but it turns out they were just as good as the larger stones in crystals and I did not get a bad stone out of the ten. Excellent buy and the book is a good short read and makes the finds much more interesting.

Amazing and fun for everyone
I will admit, I was skeptical about buying geodes for my son. I I thought they would’t be as spectaculr as as the photos, but they were amazing. So far we have opened six and they are all so unique and . It’s so exciting for my 5 year old son and honestly me as well. So far 5 out of the 6 geodes have been very beautiful. I highly recommend.

Great fun for all ages!!
We got these for our daughter's 10th bday (10 geodes for 10 years old). She absolutely loves them. We used wood chisels & hammer, because that's what we had already. We scored them, as directed. Our daughter broke open the first one & it had some very light pink and lavender in it, we're assuming amethyst, but whatever it is is really pretty. It took her about 15 minutes to get that one open, after we scored it on both sides. After that & trying several others for a few minutes, she let the rest of us open them, stating that the most fun part was getting to see them first & pick them up when they finally break. One opened on my husband's 3rd try. Some took many tries--15+ minutes. Too hard for 6 year old brother to be able to open the one his sister gave him, but he enjoyed trying for over half an hour. So, I think these would be great for any age, even if the parents are the ones opening them. Our daughter wanted to put all of them in their own ziploc bag & label them with who all worked on opening each one. She thought that was very fun, too. Our 6 year old said many times now that he wants a box of them for his birthday, too. We will purchase the proper chisels for the next batch, bc we pretty much ruined the wood chisels with this and the others would probably work better anyway. We have one left to open. All looked nice, some were more beautiful than others, but again, we were very pleased with all of them.

Beautiful crystals from a trusted brand
We buy geodes to break open whenever we can get our hands on them. I was able to receive these at a discounted price for review (not free, I did pay for them and they were worth every penny). This set comes with 10 geodes that ranged from 2 inches to 4.5 inches, safety goggles, an information booklet, a small magnifying glass, and 3 rock stands. I was very impressed by the quality of the crystals; we got several different varieties. I'm posting pictures of some of the rocks we cracked open so you can have an idea of what you'll get with this set, but keep in mind that you could get different crystals-maybe even amethyst if you're lucky! These geodes were pretty difficult to crack. We used a hammer to open them. We bought another set of geodes recently and my 7-year old daughter was able to crack them open by herself, but not these ones. They are still fun for the kids but don't anticipate them being able to get them open by themselves. On the positive side these were chuck-full of crystals. Of course, you can use a rock saw on these if you have one or the hammer and chisel method. We just used a hammer and placed the rocks inside of a sock so that pieces wouldn't go flying everywhere. I was surprised by how well these cracked though, even if they were difficult to break. Usually when you have to strike the rock hard with the hammer, they tend to shatter, but these mostly broke cleanly in half or in thirds-not bad at all for just using a hammer. We daughter is ecstatic about how awesome these geodes are. She neatly set them all up for display on her dresser after we got them all cracked. Overall, these are good sized and contain a ton of crystals and many different varieties. I rely strongly on reviews when making purchasing decisions, so I try my hardest to provide honest, solid, and detailed feedback to help others with making their own decisions.I hope that this review was helpful for you. Happy cracking!

Great gift for kids!
Purchased the geodes for my 7 year old's birthday. She absolutely loved breaking them open, but I was pretty excited about it too! We opened a few at a time and let the whole family and a few friends open one. I guess we got lucky and all of the rocks were actual geodes... no duds. Only one of the rocks was somewhat solid, but it still was filled with crystals. There were two different types of geodes in the kit. All of the crystals were either white or light gray-purple-ish. Very pleasantly surprised and pleased!

Great mix; as expected.
I bought two boxes of the Nat Geo Break Open 10 Premium Geodes. They are exactly as expected and are similar to the ones I’ve seen for sale at science museum gift shops, but with more variety. These will be given as part my 8-yr old’s birthday party favors along with a printed insert about geodes and instructions (better than candy and junk toys, I think). The instructions inside are clear and printed nicely with color pictures. There is a good mix of geodes with different colors, shapes, and sizes so they all don’t appear to be from the same place. For the most part they each feel fairly light, 3 of the largest ones of the total 20 feel heavy/solid, one was already broken but that’s OK since I got to see the crystals inside. Geodes should feel light since ideally they’re hollow inside. The solid ones might have pretty striations but are hard to break open. I weighed one set and it was about 2.2 lbs. I’ve also included pictures of the box, the packaging, both sets where one includes a ruler to give you an idea of their sizes. The sizes in both boxes are similar. I also included pics of the broken geode before and after washing. I’d definitely buy it again.

Loved it!!!!
These geodes were so cool! We got this kit for my son on his 11th birthday and he was not dissapointed in the least! He easily smashed most of them with a hammer. Just 2 of the bigger ones required a chisel and a hammer. They are beautiful! We didn't get a single dud!

It's like opening a surprise that God personally gave you........
I'm a 66 y/o great grandmother. I bought these for a set of my grandkids for a birthday gift. They said it was the coolest gift they'd ever gotten. There are 4 kids in that family, and they said "These are awesome, Gram!" So far they've opened 8 of the 10 and all are gorgeous. Not a dud in the bunch. Some are white, some are colored. Some are golf ball in size, some are as big as a baseball. I bought them a mason's chisel on Amazon for $4.95 as an "add-on" which was cheap to aid in an even break so they wouldn't shatter. They reported that the easy ones to open appeared to be the white ones, and if they were difficult to open, those turned out to be pretty colored inside. FYI. Just an observation. But, these are great fun, and a terrific educational gift for kids of any age, even the young at heart like myself loves ROCKS. I mean, who doesn't love nature?????? It's like opening a surprise that God personally gave you. What could be better? I want some more!!!!!!
