So here's the deal, this is my first Amazon product review, so here we go. I suppose I have what would be called a "hipster" haircut, shaved sides and long on top, you know... Hipster. And ill tell you a thing our two about all the products that i have tried over the years to keep this "high maintenance" hair cut in place, but all you need to know is that this stuff works that best. The hold lasts all day, and keeps me looking good. It goes on super easy and washes out just as quickly. Even better, where you decide to jump into the pool to show your homies your new back flip skills it doesn't burn your eyes! That's a win in my book.So don't waste your time with big brand hair products trying to find the best solution. I bet it could even style your back hair if that what you're into. I look forward to tying more Smooth Viking products in the future.

but now have my favorite product in the arsenal

I've used many styling products, preferring the mat type. I go between Aveda clay and American Crew fiber, but now have my favorite product in the arsenal. Smooth Viking has a pleasant, masculine, somewhat minty smell. It goes on light but has great style coaxing without the appearance of something in my hair. Drawbacks are it's 2 oz container and it's a little more expensive than AC fiber. With that said, I think it's worth the extra cost and I'll continue to buy this product.

Product works great and lasts all day

Product works great and lasts all day. Has a strong hold without being too rigid and does not make your hair shiny afterwards.The clay does have a somewhat strong scent when you first put it in your hair though, but it goes away after a while. It's not a bad scent, but may be too much for sensitive noses.

Volume-hold-versatility-no residue-non scented

I have tried all the clays. This clay is a 9 out of 10. I love that it dries fairly fast. This is important because once you have it set it will stay put. I do this with damp hair and then once dried completely I comb it the same way. Now my pompador looks like that's how my hair naturally grows out. It looks like perfect hair without trying. Pomade looks like you put product in and took time to style it. However, if you apply this to wet hair and just comb, it will look like regular pomade. I wish this clay had a more of a scent but no scent is just fine. It washes right out with just water and it never turns white or flakey. I have fine hair but with this clay my volume is unbelievable. Another positive to this clay is that it never leaves residue on my plastic combs, only to comb little white specs back into my pomp next time I use it. Some clays do not mix well with hairspray to set and this clay is fine with it. After using this day in and day out my hair is not dried out or crispy. My biggest complaint is that it only comes in small cans. Hey Viking. Where are the 12oz cans?

Good stuff - not a gelled look, but a natural one!

This stuff is GREAT! My husband uses it, and he has very thick hair that is hard to style. It seems to work for him. I also use it for my two little boys who have finer hair, and it's terrific - it doesn't look greasy or shiny, and leaves the hair VERY pliable. I don't like the feel of typical gel in hair because it gets all crispy, but this clay doesn't do that. I will definitely be buying it again. You need to use more when you have coarser hair, but finer hair doesn't need very much!

Not anymore - I'm very happy that I found this styling clay by Smooth Viking

I've used American Crew's Fiber for many years, always reverting back to it after trying other products that just didn't offer the all day styling power. Not anymore - I'm very happy that I found this styling clay by Smooth Viking. It applies easy, and very easy to work in and style. It leaves the hair with a clean, matte finish and you can run your hands through it without having it get stuck in a new position like the Fiber. It's a good, natural feel. When you wake up in the morning, it's a night and day difference how this products looks in your hair vs. the other. With Fiber, there was no just "comb it out and you could go out in public if you had to before showing". Not a problem with the Smooth Viking clay! It's very light and forgiving. The only downside to this product is the smell - it's very medicinal. Other than that, I'll be ordering more of this product for certain, if not just for the awkward looks on people's faces asking me what the "Smooth Viking stuff in the bathroom is?"

Female review. After Alterna stopped making Form, I was looking for another matte firm hold clay. Initially I bought Redkin Maneuver from my salon. The scent was slightly masculine, and the hold just wasn't good enough. My hair ended up looking very fluffy at the end of the day, and my part wouldn't hold. At $3 cheaper than the Redkin, I thought I'd try this matte clay. I'm so much happier with it than the Redkin. The scent is just clean, very gender neutral. You barely have to use any at all to get a really firm hold that lasts all day. Very pleased, I might actually like this more than the Alterna, it's lighter with the same level of hold.

My new favorite hair product

I really like this hair product. I have fine medium length hair that likes to fly away at the drop of a hat, and this is the first product I've used that actually manages it. I was just on vacation somewhere that was extremely windy that was blowing my hair all over the place, but It was really easy to put my hair back into place with a couple swipes of my hand. It also doesn't have a strong smell which is nice, and doesn't make your hair feel sticky or anything. Another big plus is I haven't had any problems washing it out either. So far I really like this product and will definitely buy it again when I run out.

Adds volume and a nice matte finish,not much stiff hold for longer hair.

I wanted to use at least half of this product before writing a review. This isn't a super holding clay, you will need to use a fist full of this stuff for it to get really stiff if your hair is more than an inch long, the best this will do for longer than 1" hair is give it texture, volume if your hair dries flat after a shower, and a nice matte finish. One weird thing I noticed about this product is if you apply it on a fairly damp hair, it dries with a sheen to it instead of a matte finish, but if you break it up after it dries, it gives it a really nice matte texture and makes my hair look fuller. 5 Star because this works for me. This company makes an entire line of hair products, one of them might work better for you than this particular one.

Some of the best hair product I have ever used

Some of the best hair product I have ever used. I have thick curly/wavy hair and I hate using pomade or anything shiny in my hair. It just doesn't fit my style. This clay helps shape my hair and keep it in place. That whole..."bedhead look but you know its on purpose" look. I will continue to get this overtime I need some clay. It smells great too!
