This is the perfect countertop bin to store composting scraps. To be clear, this is not a composter. Composting is a process that must be done over a period of time to break up organic material (like scraps of vegetables and egg shells) into compost which is excellent soil for the garden. I recently bought a Bokashi Composting Starter Kit (which includes the material to break down the scraps of organic material). I use this OXO bin by my cutting board and throw in scraps like banana peel and cucumber skins. Every two days or so I transfer the scraps into the composter. This is helpful because the smell is kept to a minimum. It also limits my opening and closing of my Bokashi Composting bin which is supposed to be kept to a minimum.

**1 Year Update**- We still love it! Use it daily, it works great. This product has saved us from our constant fight with fruit flies! We eat TONS of fruit in the house. Huge banana lovers and its hard to keep fruit flies away when there is always some peels in the trash for them to lay eggs in. I ordered this product along with an outdoor compost bin, and I'm very pleased with it! It holds a lot of stuff and the lid is razor thin and leaves no gap for flies to get in. The handle is extra durable. I love how the top/Lid comes off easily. I would highly recommend this model over any of the other ones that have built in filters. This thing is perfect. I've actually gotten fruit flies into the house because the outdoor composter is not that far away (we don't have a big lot of land), and the flies just die right away cause they can't find anything to eat or lay eggs in. It's been awesome. I no longer panic when I see a single fruit fly.

My other half wasn't happy when he saw it. We have been using a large plastic bowl with a lid that snapped in four places to seal out all odors. I had searched for 2 years for something that would fit in a cabinet instead of on the counter! We both skeptical when we saw the design; we weren't confidant it would seal out odor. It uses a very small footprint under my kitchen sink cabinet. This instantly made me happy. We are heavy composters; lots of garlic and onion scraps, banana peels; we eat lots of fresh vegetables and bananas; make our own fresh salad; all scrap goes in this composter. I brew cold coffee so 1/2 pound of grounds per week and lots of tea bags; we have a ton of plants and use our compost. This container holds less than the bowl did, but we just walk it out to the compost bin 3 to 4 times a week. We live in a warm climate so not an issue. What clinches the deal on this product is that surprisingly, we have not once smelled any odors whatsoever with the lid closed. Also, none of our friends have picked up a see-through container off our counter top and said, oh, what's in here?, so no more embarrassing explanations of how we kept garbage in a bowl on top of our counter!

I was tired of having a food tupperware as my compost container. I wanted something that is easy to open / close with just one hand and no hassle for when I am cooking and I need to discard compost quickly. This is it! It's also easy to clean and the perfect size, I empty it every couple of days.

I have a small apartment kitchen and needed a compost container that did not take up much space; I use the small biobags and just have to carry a bag outside to the compost container the city provides 2-3 times a week; if I am preparing a meal that will have a lot of items to pare; cut up, remove cores, etc, I just use a brown paper bag instead and take it out with the table scraps after the meal. This little container doesn't get disgusting inside like larger ones I have used in the past, especially the ones with filters in the top. I rinse or wash it out after each use, set it on the balcony to air dry, and it is good as new and no odor at all. If I am in a hurry and it does not have a noticeable odor at all, and that often is the case, I can just switch out the bag. It would not be for every household but is perfect for my small one of two.

So many things to love about this little can. It's small enough to be inconspicuous on the counter-top, but large enough to hold about a week's worth of compost. The lid lifts easily so you can be cutting veggies with one hand and lift the lid and toss scraps with the other. The green lining matches the color of the green compostable bags at Whole Foods which fit perfectly inside the can. Twist the top of the bag and transfer easily to your outside recycling bin. Cleaning is a breeze, and finally, the grey color looks inconspicuously lovely on my gray marble countertop.

Was looking for something as an alternative to the plastic coffee can I had been using. This is perfect. I have a very large deep sink and keep it in the sink in the corner for easy access. Big enough for our needs to empty every 1-3 days depending on what we have been cooking. Cover opens easily with one hand but still keeps the smell inside. Yes - the stuff inside smells if it's been there a while, but once covered the smell stays inside. Sides are smooth and it cleans well with warm water. I clean it occasionally with soap but less then once a week. Nice handle makes for simple transport out to our compost pile. Lid pulls off if need be. My husband always takes it off to empty it, I don't. Durable - I bang it on the side of the compost bin to get out the bits. Happy with purchase, have been using for several months.

My parents do a lot of composting in the yard because they love to garden. They also cook dinner every single night and have tons of compostable material. I was looking for an alternative to a giant ice cream bucket thing that they were using. It was such a hassle to take it back and forth out to the garden. I saw this on Amazon right before Christmas and thought I’d buy it to make the process easier for them. They absolutely love it. It’s wicked easy to clean the interior. No more clear plastic bags although if you want, you could also get biodegradable ones. You can easily lift up the lid but it does securely shut so no bugs can get inside. The handle works great and is durable. It’s very easy to just bring it out to the yard to empty. Removal of the lid is easy too when emptying or cleaning. It’s a little small but perfect for kitchen counters and smaller spaces. And hey, makes you walk out more to the yard to compost! Been a few months now and it’s been working fine. Even if it broke somehow, I’d definitely consider buying a second.

My husband and I have always used one of those metal canisters, and we've always had issues with the hinge breaking that closes the lid. I didn't want to get one of the countertop containers that had the holes in it, as I ready many reviews from people that had fruit fly issues. So, I decided to try this. I have to say, that my husband and I have been very impressed with this container. We've been using this for about a month or two now. The lid does not latch, but it closes, and we haven't had any smell or fruit fly issues. We empty it every few days. The inside of the container is kind of curved, so the scraps empty easily into our compost bin, and it the inside is very easy to clean. The container might be too small for a larger family or someone who has a lot of scraps, but for just the two of us, it's a perfect size. Also, the lid is super easy to detach to throw your scraps into the compost bin and then re-attach.

I love this Compost Bin! It is very well designed. They actually tested all aspects of it. The one handed operation is SO much better than having to lift off a lid like my old steel compost bin. The lid flips up/down very easily. The lid removes when you want to empty it out. The plastic inside is super smooth so there are no nooks or crannies for food to get caught. Most of the waste simply slips off and then you can just rinse it and you are good to go. I don't have to buy compost bags anymore either. There is no smell when it is on the counter. The one thing I would improve (and I'd give it four 1/2 stars if I could because of this) is that it is too small. I think it could be twice as big - a little wider and a little taller would be great. Otherwise, it really is a great product. I was worried about it looking tacky on my counter because it is plastic, but is is so well designed that it even looks classy on my granite counter!
