It's rare that a redesign doesn't leave the consumer high and dry
Thank you Dewalt!!!!! The DCA1820 is one of these rare devices made by an OEM (as opposed to some random one off manufacturer in China) to bridge major redesign. Like many Dewalt Customers I began collecting 20V Max products when I needed a new cordless tool as it was obvious that the old 18V line was being slowly phased out. However with several 18V tools remaining I wasn't going to abandon the line. But with aging batteries I started looking for options. ***Insert Angel decending sound effect*** This is a straight up pin adaptor for using 20V Max batteries with your 18V XRP tools. And it works beautifully. Now I wish to make two notations. 1st) No. This will not fry your 18V tool. Why? Because both the 20V Max Li-Ion and 18V XRP Ni-Cd packs are actually 18V. "What??? No your wrong. It clearly states 20V on the side of the battery! Learn to read!" Okay, okay... So hears the story. 20V Max is a marketing gimmik that is giving you the approximate maxium resting voltage of Li-Ion pack freshly charged. Once a load is applied, say a motor from your drill it will drop to its working voltage of 18V. Your old XRPs were the same. They charged to a bit more thsn 20V then ran at 18. It's the same principle that your 12V car battery is fully charged at just shy of 13V and the alternator charges it at around 14V. So why did Dewalt do this? Because their main competition Milwaukee is running 18V labeled systems and thst sounds so last year when compaired to 20V Max. (Yeah I think it was weak too. But that's why they did it.) 2) No. You cannot and should not attempt to charge your batteries through this adaptor. It will not work and could be dangerous if it did. Li-Ion and Li-Po are hot new technology in the battery world but also can be explosively devastating if they are not charged properly. Surpringly, due to the design of the 20V Max batteries it doesn't add any more girth to the tool. The packs are smaller and a bit lighter so weight and balance are both preserved. It adds a small bit of hieght but that won't cause me any issues. I'm very happy with the DCA1820 and applaud Dewalt for bringing this to market.

Very happy customer!
What a difference! I own an 18v hammer drill and the 20v battery really woke the drill up. I have several newer 20v drills/drivers so I didn’t need the adapter with the batteries. I compared it with the old 18v battery and the new 20v battery and I can feel a difference. The overall fit is pretty good. One thing I noticed is that that it comes out easier if you take the 20v battery out of the adapter first and don’t try taking it off the drill as a whole. I have no complaints and I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. If you have older 18v tools, but this adapter, spend the money on 20v batteries, and your old 18v drills will work just as good as the new ones. 2 thumbs up from me.

18V to 20V adapter
I have an older 18V reciprocating saw that I wanted to upgrade to the 20V batteries. This works great. My only issue is with this adapter and the 9AH battery. For some reason it wouldn't fit into the adapter. I found that the 2 tabs (shown at the bottom of the picture) were in the way of this battery. It worked perfectly with the smaller 1.3AH batteries that I have for my drill and impact driver so I removed the tabs (just broke them off with a pair of pliers) and tried it with the 9AH battery and it worked perfectly. I realize that this basically nullifies the warranty but it does make it compatible with all 20V Max batteries. Great product.

Exactly what I had hoped for
Bought two of these for my 18V drills. While they weren't supposed to work for the big 5Amp batteries, I have not had any issues in almost a year. Also using them for the small vacuum. I didn't actually expect it to fit on the vac, but it does. The adapter does however not work for the finish nailer, which is now my only remaining 18V tool. I know that some have complained about how hard they are to depress when removing them, which is why I bought 2. What I also find is that you MUST take the battery out before you try to remove the adapter. While this is probably described somewhere, who reads manuals ... Well, maybe this helps another know-it-all like me ;)

Excellent purchase, works great, well thought out!
Great adapter, thanks to Dewalt for adding in a little backwards compatibility. I couldn't be happier, this thing adds new life to the dozens of 18v tools I already own and at the same time, allows me to upgrade to the 20volt system without starting over from "tool one". I bought the new 20v weed wackier as well as a cordless blower, both of these come with 5Ah batteries and these high capacity batteries, coupled with one of these adapters, have about 3X MORE LIFE than the original 18v old style barreries ((1.8Ah) and really make your old tools shine again. I just bought 2 more of these!

New life for my XRP drill motor
I'm using this for an older XRP DeWalt drill motor as a second drill. The old Ni-Cad batteries were all dead, and I got a newer lightweight model but wanted to keep the XRP. This is the perfect helper, allowing me to use the new Li-Ion batteries with the old drill. The only caution I have is that I have to take the batteries off it when I'm not using it, because if I leave them on, they get run flat. Not sure if that's because of the older drill or this adapter, but no problem - I just take the battery off when I am done using it. No points off for that, I'm just happy to keep my old drill!

Love this!
After many years of use my 18 volt Dewalt batteries were in need of replacing. I set out to just replace them with OEM batteries but when I discovered that with an adaptor I could upgrade to the more powerful, longer lasting 20 volt battery I was stoked. I read the reviews and saw there were a lot of negative comments about how difficult it was to remove the battery when the adapter is used. That concerned me some but I bit the bullet and bought one battery and one adaptor anyway. What I discovered is that although it is a bit more of a challenge to remove than the original 18 volt battery it isn't nearly as hard as some made it out to be providing you remove the battery from the adapter first and then remove the adapter from the tool. Otherwise many people's fingers (including mine) aren't long enough to reach the release buttons on the adaptor with enough strength to be able to depress them when attempting to remove both the battery and adaptor at the same time. I have a half dozen Dewalt tools and I liked the new set up enough that I went back and purchased 2 more adaptors and three more 20 volt batteries. Great product Dewalt! I appreciate the ability to upgrade my perfectly good 18 volt tools to 20 volt with all the advantages that come with that upgrade. THANKS!

What a difference in power! I have other tools that run the higher volts yet some of my older tools where still on 18V. I love this little adapter especially on my battery saw. I will forward a few thing first~ 1)When first using adapter both connection areas are stiff (much like new batteries) making it almost impossible to remove the adapter from tool and/or the battery from adapter. Nice thing is once the connection points have been used a bit it does get easier to remove accessory from either point. 2) When using on drill motor it become a lot higher when sitting on base. If you are like me you know your tools so use care if you set it on top of anything as you blindly grab for it...you may knock it over and damage tool or surface it drops onto. 3) When using with my 6.5 battery saw I must move the gate up a bit to accommodate for the extra length on the back of the tool. It is not much yet if you are use to using your entire blade this may hamper you a bit. As far as anything else I have yet to discover anything that was not a bonus for buying this adapter.

Great for limited applications
Yes, I saw the comments about draining batteries that were left connected and the adapter being difficult to remove. But for my uses, those really don't matter and this may work for you, too, for certain limited uses. When 2 out of 3 of my old, heavy 18V XRP batteries finally failed, the cost of replacement batteries made little sense for my 10 year old drill and driver set when a whole new set with better batteries and brushless motors could be had for not much more money. The only thing that bugged me was that my jigsaw that used the old batteries was still in great condition. So for me, this is a 5-star product because it lets me use the new batteries and extend the life of my jigsaw. The other complaints don't matter to me. I only use the jigsaw occasionally and wouldn't leave a battery connected anyway. I agree it's pretty stiff to remove and wouldn't be practical to routinely move between tools, but I'll be leaving the adapter in the jigsaw since that's the only place I need it. So, depending on your use, it may be a winner, but it also may not be practical for multiple tools that get heavy use.

DEWALT 18v to 20v Adapter
This product is amazing. I bought my first battery drill from Montgomery Wards a long time ago. Batteries have come a long way since then. After using several different manufacturers tools I chose the 18 volt DEWALT. When the 20 volt came out I bought the DEWALT 20 volt 1/2 inch impact driver, greatest tool I own. I was so impressed that as my 18 volt batteries wore out I replaced all the other tools with the new 20 volt tools. They are long lasting with plenty of power. Now with this new adapter my old tools can be used for liter work in the house and barn. Plus my reciprocal saw and the skill saw that I didn't replace are going to be used again.
