Excellent Digging Bug Fun!
This was a favorite of my almost 5 year old son. He loves insects or all kinds and arachnids. We were not sure what to expect so important stuff to know: * There is a scorpion painted on the dirt/sand piece you get, this is not an actual scorpion. * If your kids are a little more eager to dig faster they will not destroy a specimen. * I put the block we were digging on a small cookie sheet (jelly roll pan - it has about 1 inch lip around it). This was perfect for containing our mess. * The specimens are real and are enclosed in a clear acrylic like a small rock. Each bug is in its own clear rock. * Specimens are small but you get a magnifying glass with this as well as the digging tool and brush. * Specimens are excellent quality, the size of them is great because my son can easily put these in his pocket and take with him to show his friends when we are out. He is ready to dig another one and I am going to see if I can find one with different specimens for variety but truthfully he would be just as happy with the exact same ones. He loved this! I did too!

Interesting and fun
We had a lot of fun with this. Because my son is only 5, we opted to use a spray bottle to make the excavation easier. He loved reading about the different specimens. The book also included lots of basic facts about arthropods, what they are, and specifics about insects, arachnids, and lifecycles. We just used the tray that came with the box, and there was minimal fallout. I plan to save the dirt and try burying other toys or specimens I buy.

While not nearly as cool as the Shark Tooth dig kit that we also received at Christmas, my 5-year-old son really enjoyed this activity. It was very neat for him to dig out the different bugs though they weren't quite as hidden in the dig area as the teeth were. The bugs are encased in something that's like a marble. Makes sense though as these bugs are real bugs and are as tough as teeth are without the added protection of the glass (?) encasing them.

nice project to do with children but placement could be better
little mess but it was okay . the only downfall is wished that the molded scorpion on top would somehow be savagable so it could be kept . Also placement of the gem stones ( 3 of them) would be better placed and not as close to those trying to save the molded scorpion as it breaks it due to placement of them .My grandson was disappointed when his cracked getting the last gem stone out .

5 year old loved it. Digged it up an made a little mess. The bugs are in a marble size ball but even smaller then the normal marble

It didn't take my son long to unearth these, but he absolutely loves them. They are among his treasured possessions. Thank goodness they are encased though, as they are quite small.

The bugs are contained in small resin disks. They're tiny, but my son loved them. For my 7 year old with ADHD this was a fun activity that didn't take too long, but kept him engaged.

Very fun and exciting!
My 8 year old daughter was terrified when she received this Christmas gift. After reassuring her that a bug would NOT come out alive and kicking we got to work. We laid everything out and made sure we had a dish rag under the dig area because it makes a big mess. To our surprise each bug (we found 3 total) was incased in a glass like cover. It was fun and we got to read about each bug we discovered. This is such a fun and neat gift, we are going to buy more. Worth the money!

This was one of the BEST digs I have purchased
Get this! This was one of the BEST digs I have purchased. My grandsons enjoy doing them and I have purchased many. I feel the end result in this was fantastic!

Fun for my kid.
I know there have been a lot of complaints about this kit by parents, but my 5 year old absolutely loved this and it has peaked his interest in biology. The insects may be small, but my son loves them and is always showing them to people. If you're an adult buying this for yourself, are you going to be impressed? Probably not. Older kids might not even enjoy it, but my little one certainly did.
