I was really excited about this. I still have cassettes from my childhood that I wanted to convert to mp3 - songs that aren't really common anymore. I also had a set of meditation tapes that I paid a lot of money for that I also wanted to transfer. The set up was easier than pie. I have a Macbook Pro and it was just pretty much plug-and-play. It requires Audacity (a free music program) which I already had installed, but if you don't have it you'll have to download and install that. Audacity is the capture software, which actually has a lot of tools to improve the music as well if it's an old scratchy tape you're converting. The device itself is a simple cassette player with fast forward, rewind, play, and stop. It has a volume wheel which adjusts the volume of both the headphones as well as what is going through the USB. It also has a loop feature so your cassette will reach the end of one side and automatically play the other - saving you the flip. Of course, you still have the silence as it reaches the end of one side and before the music begins on the other side. But you can erase that in Audacity. It connected to my laptop with a simple USB cord, and it also came with a cheesy pair of headphones so I could listen while it recorded to my computer. I threw those away, as they just kept falling out of my ears anyway. The music also came through my speakers so I was able to listen anyway. The resulting recording was really much better than I expected - especially for the meditation tape where the music flows back and forth from right to left to induce a meditative state. It was all captured really well. I am impressed, and so very glad to have a chance to convert my youth to mp3. Awesome! My Mom gave me a couple of old tapes that she had found when moving, recordings I had made at boarding school when I was 10 years old (i'm 40 now!) I don't have a tape player, and can you believe the young twazocks at Best Buy LAUGHED at me when I asked if they had one?!!! This handy gadget kills two birds with one stone because it enables you to listen to your old tape cassettes, but also you can capture the sound to your computer forever! The sound output is pretty decent, it plays my tapes cleanly and at the correct speed, AND you don't need to put in batteries or ac if you don't want to - it runs plugged into your computer's USB port. This, to me, is brilliant! Once you have it installed, you just go to Preferences to be sure you have the correct input selected, then literally just play your tape, hit Record, and record whatever section of the tape you want. You can edit your clips any way you want, save the whole project to edit later, and Export the track to various file formats including WAV and MP3. The sound quality is very good! I'm super super pleased with this device. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much, and i'm blown away. This thing is too cool. Feels nostalgic in the hand, like an old Walkman. It was nice to be able to record old tapes of my brothers and I acting goofy 20 years ago and send them out. I'm glad I purchased it. I'll keep it forever.
