Our cat is a rescue, but clearly from his gigantic size and his thick coat, he has a good amount of Maine Coon ancestry. Our vet tech thinks so as well. His coat is therefore constantly getting mats because it is thick on the outside, and like cotton underneath.. This rake seems to help break those up far better than any other brush or comb that we have, and he is a big fan of being brushed with it. When the covered inner blade hits a mat that can't be brushed out, it cuts through the matted fur instead of just pulling on it, which clearly would hurt. No complaints, and it seems sturdy and has a good grip.

I have an indoor, long-haired calico rescue cat (around 7 years old), and a short-haired rescue cat (around 6 years old). My long-haired cat rarely gets matts in her fur, but she does shed a lot starting in the spring and throughout the summer. Because both cats tend to groom themselves and each other, there is a big increase in vomiting (both food and hairballs) starting in early spring until their winter coats come in. I bought the Pet Republique Professional Dematting Comb, mainly for my long-haired cat. Since she was a street cat before I rescued her, she is a little skittish of strangers, noises, and being touched/petted on her tummy. However, she loves to be brushed around her head, neck, back and sides. I just work in the other areas (tummy/underarms, rear end, tail) a little a time. This dematting comb is amazing. I use it gently so that she doesn't feel like I am pulling on her hair, and even so, it gets rid of a huge amount of excess fur. While I am using it, I tend to run my other hand behind the comb lightly so that, if she feels like it is tugging in the areas in which her fur is longer or thicker, my other hand is helping to keep the tugging to a minimum. I also like that the dematting comb works to thin out the hair - sort of like getting your hair "texturized" at a hair salon. Short of having her shaved in the summer, this is perfect to keep her comfortable and cool during those hot, "dog days" of Texas summer heat. There is only one thing I would love to have (in addition to this product): A narrow one just like it (teeth maybe 1.0 to 1.5 inches across) to use in very narrow spots, like the underarms and on the leg areas. There is another brand that has this specification, but I would prefer going with the brand I know. I did not receive anything for my review of this product.

Holy cow! This comb is like a slicker comb on steroids. I have a rather large, very fluffy, pretty matted cat. I called the vet about having her shaved and found that they wanted a minimum of $75 to do the job. I decided to try alternatives first so I started looking online for a good tool for dematting by cat. I came across this one, and the reviews were mostly good so I decided to give it a try. Immediately upon opening the package, I was impressed with the solid, balanced, weighty feel of the comb. The grip fits my hand nicely and is comfortable to hold and use. I started gently combing the cat with it and she seems to really enjoy the feel. It only takes a very light touch to get right into the undercoat and start removing masses of loose hair. The comb has two sides, one with fewer teeth spaced farther apart. It is recommended that you start by using the wider spaced teeth first, then switch to the tighter side for maintenance and finish work. Within just a few minutes, I had removed an amazing abundance of loose hair from the cat. We still have a long way to go and I have only begun to start on the actual matted areas, but I am impressed with both the quality and functionality of this nice comb. I've removed a few of the smaller knots and began picking apart some of the larger ones. I am confident that this tool will do the job and my cat (who is relatively skittish) is being very accepting. I can only assume that means I'm not hurting her with the deep combing and pulling. I will update the post with my final thoughts once I get her all straightened out.

WARNING! Be prepared for a fuzzy mess! Because this is great at removing that stubborn matted undercoat! I can't believe how great this works on my Leonberger, Golden and Pyranees I could literally brush out enough to make another dog! Works better that my expensive furminator! Must have if you have a large dog with an under coat! Life Saver!

I have a long haired, mildly evil cat who seems to have developed a taste for flesh during grooming. I kid, but he hates it. I hate it . It's barely productive and we just have to do it again and again . I swear I've tried everything from cat detangler to shaving this poor guy. We've tried something like fourteen brushes this year alone. He is a fluffy ball of matting literally hours after grooming. I half expected this was garbage, and I admit he wasn't fond of it, but holy cow does this thing work! And it gets the really underlying things you can't even tell are coming loose-it was like two cats came off my cat! The realproof is that it's been an entire day and he's fully matt and knot free.

Got it today and used it my Norwegian Forest cat who has a very long coat and a very thick undercoat. He gets some matting after an annual molt, mostly on his belly and under the legs. Used the tool and and did an amazing job removing the fur clumps. I feel safe using it because of the rounded teeth that grasp and gently cut through the fur without any danger of poking the skin. I also used it to brush through his top coat, and it easily removed all the "lose" hair. Wish I knew about this earlier. Very happy with the product!

Our 5 mo. old Goldendoodle doesn't mind when this dematting brush is used. If done properly, am sure it will be painless for most longhaired breeds. The trick is not to yank the coat of matted hair. Start close to the skin but not on it. Brush upwards and stop when slight resistance is felt, then repeat the cycle. Mats are removed between 2 - 5 upwards strokes. Be gentle and your pooch will appreciate it. Am also using a metal comb to locate matted areas. The result is a good looking, dematted, fluffy doodle. Highly recommend this quality made tool for all longhaired dog owners.

I have bought dozens of brushes and combs for my cat. She has extremely long and also fine fur. As she's gotten older, 16 now, she doesn't groom like she used to, and keeping her from getting horrible mats has been a nearly impossible task. She takes a nap and wakes up with new mats! Her fur is just crazy fine with a dense undercoat. I was a little skeptical of whether I'd be wasting more money on another product that didn't work. But after reading all of the reviews, I decided to buy. At the cost of about $15 it is cheaper than others I've tried so I figured it was worth a shot. This is THE BEST tool I have found! I purchased the small tool which is the perfect size for cats. I'm not worried about cutting her, she likes it, and it actually works!! First use I was able to get two fluffy handfuls of fuzz off of this furry little 8lb cat. Amazing! Seems to be really well made so I don't see it breaking, but if I ever needed to purchase another for any reason I would have no hesitation making the same purchase again. Awesome tool Pet Republique!! Thank you!

We adopted a disgustingly fat cat (22 pounds currently, he's lost a whole 2 pounds!) that we've dubbed The Majestic Walrus. The previous owner had not told us that he was quite severely matted, unable to clean his back half. The mats made him ornery, prone to biting and generally unhappy. Atter a year of gently teasing mats only to find a new one immediately, we bought this tool. It is an absolute LIFE SAVER. After two days of brushing him slowly, with time in between to keep him calm, he is now mat free and much more active. Some of the more severe mats required a little finesse, but for the most part everything went smooth and easy. I only got bit once hahah. Fat Kitty thanks you, Pet Republique.

This sounded to good to be true. A rake that gets out mats painlessly without shaving? As crazy as it sounds this really does work. I used it on three cats. 2 medium hairs and one very very fluffy Thor Cat. Some of the bigger mats took some work, but this was just a miracle for us and our cats. Most are afraid of clippers and move too much for scissors. I'm very impressed with how they just let us rake them. 2 thumbs up and 4 paws!
