Great sharpening tool
I've been using ceramic sharpeners for the last several years. They work ok, but never seemed to get the best edge on a blade. I spent some time last night sharpening a few kitchen knives - they are now very sharp. This is a must-have tool for anyone that likes a nice sharp knife. Side note - I used to see these for sale at retail locations in the 80's. I went to several retailers and only found the ceramic and a few diamond sharpeners. Wonder why these are no longer sold in retail since they do a fantastic job? Anyway - if you like your kitchen knives wicked sharp, get this stone and spend some time honing your blades. Nothing beats a good sharp knife!

I have a small collection of fine Japanese kitchen knives
I have a small collection of fine Japanese kitchen knives. I also have several high carbon steel kitchen knives that are almost 100 years old. This whetstone has changed my sharpening and user experience completely. I had "retired" the old knives, as I was unable to get them as sharp as I wanted and needed. That is no longer a problem! This combination stone is worth every penny. All my knives are now performing like new once again! Shipping time was quick, packaging was perfect, stands are non-slip.

Great whetstone, I have sharp knives again!
I've had an opportunity to use this whetstone and it produced some very sharp knives. I am very pleased! I used the 1000 grain side first and then moved onto the 6000 grain. The bamboo stand and plastic holder held the stone in place without any issues. I gave the plastic angle guide a try, but ended up not using it. It definitely helped with getting a good angle, but it also interfered with the motion a bit. This could have been user error, but I don't need it.

Read my review! This is the whetstone you want.
Takes a little practice to get the same angle on your knife, so practice on cheap knives if youve never used a whetstone. Swiping randomly on it will mess up the angle on your knife and tye whetstone. It has sharpened my fillet knives back to brand new. Im an advid fisherman and i do alot of filleting, my cheap rapala 6 inch fillet knife lasted over 5-6 speckled trout all 15-20 inches and has kept its sharpeness which the pull through knife sharpeners will never do for your knives. The angle guide doesnt work? Maybe only with certain knives it gives a good angle, but doing it without it will give you practice anyway. And lets say you do mess up this whetstone.... well it isnt expensive! I will be buying another as a gift for a fishing buddy, and another after mine wears down. Great product! Most effort ive ever put into a review.

Great company back-up!
I recently bought some really high quality kitchen knives that I want to keep in their sharpest condition. I ordered a two sided whetstone that just requires soaking in water and not using oil and comes with an attachable guide to assist in the sharpening. It has been a long time since I have used a whetstone and I wasn't sure how to use it. To my delighted surprise the company, Culinary Obsession, that I bought this from sent me very detailed and simple instructions on how to use the whetstone and a link to a video. It's so nice to see a company back-up their product and their customers!

Good whetstone that comes with simple to follow instructions
This has sharpened my very, very basic set of kitchen knives that I got years ago for like $30 and have never sharpened or honed before. Those knives were nicked up, dull, and could not cut anything easily anymore. It was dangerous, but I didn't know any better. But recently I'd gotten more into cooking and stumbled upon the fact that even bad knives could be sharpened to cut pretty smoothly. Before I received the stone, I got an email from the seller with a PDF explaining step-by-step how to use the stone. NOTE: this is a sharpener, not a honer so it should not need be used often. I would recommend this honer: https://smile.amazon.com/Wüsthof-Knife-Sharpening-Steel-Loop/dp/B00009WDT8/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1521256552&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=wusthof+knife+honer Upon receiving this item, I watched the video they linked in PDF which is also attached on the side of the box. It seems pretty simple, but definitely does not feel natural when I first tried to do it. I'd recommend using a knife you don't care too much about in case you mess it up a little bit. I also used the angle assist tool that came with it only for the first two knives. After I felt like I had a good sense of the angle you need to sharpen at, I took off the assist tool and sharpening became much easier. All my knives now pass the test of cutting a tomato pretty smoothly. They pass the magazine paper cutting test but not perfectly. They will do just fine cutting now; a million times better than anything I've had before.

Will it sharpen a 30" Katana blade? - Yes!
My Katana is a replica made by Marto in Toledo, Spain. Even though it's not a valuable or historic Japanese Katana, Toledo swords are nothing to shake a stick at. Anyway, the Marto Katana has a European-type compound edge as opposed to the traditional Japanese flat edge. That's ok, because that's what I'm used to. But the main problem with my Katana was that, for safety's sake, it was sharpened only half-way up the length of the blade when I purchased it. The remainder was decidedly dull and the double bevel was not even apexed. You could look closely and see that the two edges didn't meet. In order to sharpen the remainder of the blade I first had to "apex" it. This required removing quite a lot of metal. I probably should have used something like a 400 grit to do that but, after a lot of work, was able to get an edge with the 1000 grit blue stone. Then it was a simple matter to hone a finer edge with the 6000 grit stone. I must say, working with a 30 inch blade was a bit cumbersome but was eventually able to get a respectable edge. I would like to add that the people at Obsession Products are *very* committed to making sure that their customers are happy. I had many helpful, long and involved correspondences with them during the process and they were always happy to help.

Great product, but be careful. Takes a bit of practice to perfect.
I bought this thing on a whim after watching some guy on youtube sharpen a bunch of knives and then cut though some very hard stuff. Turns out it did actually help me rather than just entertain me for a day, as a regular stick sharpener (or whatever you call it) doesn't seem to get things nearly this sharp. Be careful though, you will probably mess up whatever knife you use first. I recommend going to the dollar store and buying one or two of their chef knives, and seeing how sharp you can get them. Maybe do a comparison , one out of the box and one after it's got a mirror edge finish from all the sharpening. This set includes a little handy clip to help you keep your knife at the proper angle, but I wouldn't bother with it. Learn on a cheap knife instead. Besides, the clip is kinda small and the method the instructions show would have you ramming the clip into the side of the stone anyway if you aren't already at the right angle

Adequate for your average kitchen knives
First time I've bought a whetstone that actually bothered to have a grit rating! Works well enough if you have some kitchen knives that are just getting dull. I would recommend getting a ceramic sharpening stick to finish them off after using this stone. This stone alone can improve your knife significantly, but it wasn't quite up to a truly sharp knife. I purchased the Arkansas Superstick to use along with this stone, and the results are fantastic. My budget kitchen knife can cut a clean line through a paper towel now. The only thing I didn't like is the knife angle guide. It does its job decently but it makes the process waaaay louder. If you can help it, just learn to hold the knife at the proper angle yourself.

Paper thin onion slices in my future
After I used this whetstone to sharpen my good (but dull) kitchen knife, I no longer struggle to slice an onion. Even my partner commented on the fact that the knife was sharper. This is my first whetstone, so I don't have a lot of detail to add. It works. The online video provided by the company is helpful. And I now have a sharp knife. Success!
