What makes this product unique is that unlike any of its competitors in the small, portable hub market segment, it does not require a dedicated power supply. Let me explain. I am a "million mile" traveler, and I am constantly looking for ways to reduce the number of "things" I have to lug around with me. What these guys do is instead of carrying around its own power supply, they power the hub with a standard USB cable and usb charger/power supply--the same kind of charger that I carry around already to charge my phone, tablet, headphones, etc. I know it doesn't sound like much, but to me it is one less thing I have to account for when I am preparing for yet another trip.

My laptop has only 3.0 USB ports. Using numeric keypad and mouse receivers as well as a thumb drive in this hub, I have experienced no problems. Thank you for a good product and prompt delivery. Update: After 4 months use, I am even more pleased. I still keep 2 receivers in this hub, now also an external hard drive, and the fourth port is used periodically for a thumb drive -- with no problems of any kind. Today I received contact from Anker asking about experience with the product and offering phone numbers in case of any dissatisfaction, including this note: "Remember that every Anker product comes with an 18-month warranty (except for screen protectors, which come with a life-time warranty). Our team are ready and waiting to help should you have any questions at all." I'm not accustomed to dependability in small electronics at reasonable prices or customer care like this! Thank you! And no, I did not receive anything to encourage my choice to purchase this item or for my review. I have no connection to Anker or Amazon beyond being a satisfied customer.

Pros: * Small * Runs with or without power (presumably—I have mostly read this, haven't tested it very much without power myself) * Kind of nice that it takes micro-USB for power, and its power supply can be used as a USB charger Cons: * Occasionally doesn't work on my MBP. Most recently I went nuts trying to figure out why it couldn't see the hub. I rebooted to no avail. Turns out I needed to "reboot" the hub by pulling power and USB and reconnecting both. I actually bought this to replace my Amazon Basics USB 3 hub, which seemed to be having these same sorts of weird problems. Unfortunately, this hub seems to have its own set of weird problems. UPDATE February 2017: I think some of my troubles from my original review may have been due to a defective hub. The USB 3 part of that hub stopped working this past January 2017. I requested a replacement from Anker who were extremely pleasant to deal with. They shipped me a new hub free under warranty (and I didn't have to ship the old, broken one back). The new hub seems to be recognized consistently by my MBP so far. It's a toss-up who is responsible for any lingering USB 3 problems I have, MBP/OS X or the hub itself. Big huge thumbs up for Anker customer support. Their support caused me to upgrade this review from 4 to 5 stars.

I purchased this USB Hub to enable WD SafePoint backups of my WD MyCloud (WDMC) drive to multiple external HDDs. I update an "onsite" SafePoint at midnight each night and once a week I update an "offsite" SafePoint on an WD Passport (WDPP) external HDD that I keep offsite and bring home once a week for backups. I keep a USB 3.0 cable plugged into the USB port on the WDMC drive and connect the WDPP drive to it when I bring it home. My "onsite" drive used to be connected to the USB port on my Linksys router. However, when that router died and I replaced it with a NetGear router, the WDMC control panel can't "find" my "onsite" drive on the LAN. I have to plug it directly into the WDMC USB Port. I don't want to have to swap cable connections every time I want to do an offsite backup, so I bought this *powered* USB 3.0 hub in the hopes I could avoid this. I update an "onsite" SafePoint at midnight each night and once a week I update an "offsite" SafePoint on an WD Passport external HDD that I keep offsite and bring home once a week for backups. The WD Passport HDD does not have an external power source; it draws power from the USB connection. For that reason I made sure I bought the version of this product that has an external power supply. I had no idea if it would work, but I was delighted when the WDMC Admin Console found the SafePoints on both drives and was able to update both without any issues. The only caveat is that the "Eject" button on the Admin Console doesn't recognize the presence of external disk drives through the hub, so you have to decide for yourself when it's safe to disconnect the drive. The best time I found is when the WDMC drive or the externally connected drives enter "sleep" mode after a period of inactivity. It remains to be seen if this item will stand the test of time but the initial trials passed with flying colors. I'll update my review if the need arises.

I needed another small USB hub for connecting flash drives to my comuter, but also it had to be capable of being able to be used as a charger separate from my computer. Again, my first stop was looking at Anker. They had what I was looking for. This 4 port USB can plug straight into my computer if needed, or it can run off a wall plug-in to charge things. I've found some things charge slower from a computer USB port than they do if plugged into a USB Hub plugged into a wall. I'll tell you that from personal experience, that they have great customer service, no matter the issue you will get all the help you need. Friendly, courteous & very appreciative of every customer. That in itself will keep me a lcustomer with Anker. Customer service like they have is hard to find. They belive in their products & stand behind them readily.

Not bad, but voltage per USB port is a bit low when testing with a USB port tester as compared to the Unitek version. That one isn't quite as small, but I will take that over small and under powered. Makes no sense, same PSU, but the ports on this one read lower volts and amps with the same load... No backfeed through the uplink USB port, so you can use this safely with a Raspberry Pi. All in all, I think this is more than good enough when it comes to being a powered USB hub. especially if you need a slim hub that looks very aesthetically pleasing. If you are thinking of powering more than two hard drives concurrently, I would look for one that isn't slim. UPDATE: Anker customer support is amazing though. Went as far as offering a partial refund for my troubles. The product itself I would give three stars, but I will add two more for them going above and beyond in their support.

I ordered this because my new computer came with half of the USB ports of my old PC and the mouse and keyboard immediately took up two of them, the Anker Data Hub eventually taking the third. I received the Anker Data Hub earlier than advertised packaged in a sturdy, well-made box, plugged it in, and it worked perfectly. I routinely use three of the four inputs on the device with an exterior backup hard drive and two flash drives without any need for the wall charger. My only problem, albeit a minor one which I hadn't considered, is that because I'm using it on an All-In-One computer with a 24" screen, the device hangs from the input port behind the screen, which is almost a foot above the table. A USB extension cable would solve that problem. On the other hand, it would be perfect for a lap top or regular PC. I have used it with no problem to upgrade the maps on my GPS and also to upload photos from my camera. I haven't used it for charging, so I can't comment on that. I have no problem recommending this product to anyone needing extra USB inputs.

Works great. While there are a few similar products out there, I liked how this product made clear that the power supply is optional, meaning it was only required in circumstances where you may be drawing a lot of power. I found it difficult to determine on similar products whether the hub was capable of powering multiple devices without the PS - another reason I went with this product. In addition, and this is a huge plus for me, the PS is USB to micro USB with a 12V USB adapter, not like the proprietary round adapters on the similar products. I can use it for my other devices when I'm traveling and not using it to supply additional power to the hub, which, by the way, is not often. I am running a wireless Logitech mouse/keyboard USB adapter, a wireless Xbox one controller adapter, and a Cooler Master 3-fan laptop cooling pad off of the Anker hub without the PS no problem. I am yet to test use of the 4th USB on the hub, but I don't anticipate any problems. Huge fan of this product. If you are on the fence between this one and a couple others as I was, rest assured this is a good choice. The outlet adapter and micro-USB are worth the few extra bucks.

Great device, exactly what I needed. I was military for 30 years so naturally I look for solid, dependable gear, and when I find a good manufacturer I stick with them. I first used Anker a few years ago when I needed a power bank, now I have 3 different ones made by Anker along with numerous USB hubs, cables, etc. Now when I need something of this nature I do my search with the name Anker and then the product I need. I would order any of their products without hesitation. And by the way, nobody gave me anything to write this review.

UPDATE: after some thought and consideration, I decided that this little guy is not what I needed to power devices going to my TV. Rating it a 5 stars now instead of the previous 4 stars. I ended up going with a 6 port USB charger that I picked up on clearance at Sam's Club that has four 1 amp and two 2.1 amp ports which is plenty to power my Fire Stick, ChromeCast, Raspberry Pi plus my Anker Eufy Genie and two extras to charge other things. I am keeping my Huawei watch charger and one lightning connector plugged in so I can charge everything right under my TV in my office. As for the Anker 4 port USB hub, that's going in my backpack for use with my Spectre x360 which has limited USB ports... so all is right with the world now. :) ****************************************************************** Not quite what I was hoping for. My intention was to free up some outlets on my power strip that was being used to power a ChromeCast, a FireTV Stick and a Raspberry Pi. In theory, it should work flawlessly being a powered HDMI hub. My Pi powers up with no problem, the ChromeCast powers up with no problem, but the FireTV Stick is not happy. I am receiving an error saying that there is not enough power. I tried unplugging both the Pi and the ChromeCast in case they were eating up all the power provided for by the hub, but even with everything unplugged minus the Fire TV Stick, I still get a message saying "Insufficient USB power detected" Oddly enough, if you wait long enough, the FireTV Stick will log in. 2 out of 3 isn't bad... I can at least free up one plug on my power strip by powering the ChromeCast and the Pi off of the hub and powering the FireTV Stick off of the Amazon provided plug.
