Favorite tool of the year. 5 stars only because there is not more to rate it higher.
I had high hopes but low expectations. I mean it is a battery powered weed eater, right. Quickly assembled it and slapped on a battery and stepped outside to find out how this thing worked. Pulled the trigger and it wound up not wimpy like I half expected but sounded like a real string trimmer. I went to work trimming some neglected areas I cant mow with the rider and it flat took care of the task at hand. It is very easy to control. Big enough to get the job done but small enough to stick in hard to reach areas. Fully impressed with my new trimmer, I took the time to look it over more closely. This thing has a switch on top that kicks it into high gear. It is a two speed trimmer with a variable speed trigger. What is nice about this is you can work on slow speed around detail areas and then kick it into high to GET R DONE. The slow speed still gets the grass and weeds cut but it does it at a speed that does not get you into trouble. This thing is great and gets my vote for tool of the year. I bought the bare tool since I have several battery's on hand from other tools. For $99 bucks this is a no brainer. If I did not have the battery's I would have paid the $199 and got the kit and been just as happy. Worth every penny and then some.

Wonderful replacement for my gas STHL
I have finally decided to replace my gas powered STHL with this. I have a lot of DeWalt 20V tools and have for quite some time. After using this a few times, I have been able to compare and contrast to the STHL: - The DeWalt is lighter than my STHL - The DeWalt has less power overall, but I don't find this an issue. I have 1.5 acres of land that is mowed/trimmed ect. I like how quiet this is, no mixing gas and no having to clean an air filter ect.. Basically very little maintenance aside re stringing the line. - The DeWalt is taller than my STHL which is good for me, I'm 5'11" - The DeWalt low/high feature is very nice, I use low when I'm triming around more precise areas - The DeWalt trigger's throttle is calibrated nicely to control the power head (more fined tuned than the gas powered STHL) Final thought: I was worried that I'd be having to swap out batteries with the size of my property. With a 5AMP hr 20v battery, I haven't had that issue!

Should have bought this long time ago.
I use this once so far. I had a 5 ah battery and after weed eating for 30 minutes still had 2 out of 3 bars left on the battery. I used it in low setting and it performs much like the small gas weed eaters I get from walmart. I like being able to control the speed with the trigger when I weed eat around vinyl siding. We are in our 60s and its fine for me but might get a little tiresome for my wife to use. When she was younger it would have not been a problem for her. Mine came with the type 4 head that some were complaining about. However if mine ends up giving me trouble there is a type 2 head sold here on Amazon and with prime it is 25 dollars. So I will buy it if I end up needing it. Just unbolt the existing type 4 head and install the type 2. I dont have to mess with a 2 cycle engine on my weed eater or my chain saw as I also have the chainsaw. This no brush cutter by any means but I have a big echo brush cutter with a blade. Over all I am impressed with Dewalt line of 20 volt tools.

Great trimmer
Works great. Keep in mind it's by no means a gas-powered trimmer, but does the job. It takes a little getting used to, but once you figure it out, it works great, and it's nice being able to use the DeWalt batteries I already have. So it doesn't quite have the torque/power of a gas trimmer, but it certainly does the job. The batteries last longer than you would expect. But if you're cutting tall thick stuff, the batteries will drain faster. Having a couple on hand is handy, so there's always one on the charger. The cutting swath is a little smaller than I was used to, but not really a big deal, and cutting seems to work best swinging left rather than right. And you have to cut short sections at a time, not huge sweeping swaths. Balance and weight is good. Assembly is easy. For small clean-up/trim jobs around the yard, this is a great tool.

Very pleased.
Very easy to use and light enough to carry. I chose this primarily so my 11 year old son and wife could use it if they wanted to. No gas to mix. No string to pull. It works as well as I had hoped. I just use the batteries from my drill kit in it, and they work well, if not for an extended time. Still. Having 2 batteries is enough to do a couple average yards. I've had to reload the spool and it was a fairly simple task. My only complaint is the rather smallish guard. Wearing shorts and sandals while using this is a bad idea. Lol

All the power you need!
Assembly was a snap without looking at any instructions. Had a 2 yr old 3ah battery on it. Did all I needed it to do and had battery left. Around 10-15 min with mixed high and low speed use. Plenty of power to get through the tall stuff. Granted it's not a brush cutter folks. Feeds line well. Built very well with DeWalt polymer head that has ZERO flex or movement. I mean this thing deserves the DeWalt name. It's very solid! And the straight shaft is long enough I don't need to hunch over to get the job done. Love not having to listen to gas engine or deal with having mixed gas around. This electric one still makes some noise now. But, not like it's gasoline counterpart. And the hanging hook built in is brilliant! My only dislike is it seems extremely unbalanced using the 3ah battery. I think strapping a 6ah on will help balance tremendously. Will add more weight to a seemingly already heavy machine. But, worth it to make unit easier to use. I gave this one as a gift. Will be buying another for myself!

Wonderfully surprised!
What an unexpected surprise! This trimmer is perhaps the best I have used. Though I am not a professional, I do have a big yard and bought it for my wife to clean up around her landscaping. The string is incredibly tough and outlasts the same size string on my Stihl. Its actually a little noisier than I thought it would be but still very comfortable without hearing protection. Also bought two 20 v batteries with it and a converter for my 18v tools. Highly recommend this tool - especially for someone that struggles to start gas-powered trimmers.

never going gas again at home
i owned my own small landscaping business for 6 years and i swore by 2-stroke weed whackers. this weed trimmer impressed me. it has more than enough power and with a 6 Ah battery i get about 20-30 min on high setting and almost an hour on low setting. If you have ever used a weed whacker before, stringing it is a breeze. simple and you can spool a pretty long length of string in the head that comes with it. But you could always swap out the head for most standard trimmer heads. my brother put a head on with plastic blades. I would say if you had a 12v car inverter to charge a battery on the go and a 9 or 12 Ah battery or 2, this would even be a serious contender for the full time landscaper over many 2-stroke models. It is definitely not as sturdy or powerful as a high end Stihl, but for most applications its more than enough. As a home owner, this is perfect. no gas, no hassle with pull starting. just pop in a battery and go. Plus you can use the batteries on a multitude of other tools if you own them. My ONLY issue with this machine is that on the guard on the weed wacker head, the blade that cuts the string from spreading out to far is plastic and not metal. i think that will wear out pretty fast. other than that, perfect machine for the everyday home owner!

A trimmer, not a mower
I use this to trim behind a (gas) push mower. It's a far better trimmer than the single-speed, single-line Black & Decker it replaced. After half a season of practice I could quickly and cleanly edge my driveway and trim around trees, downspouts and posts. As other have noted the stock line cuts well and lasts a long time. The trimmer also works well with 0.080" round line. Although it has a pro-style head and shaft, the cutting path is small and power is comparable to a 5-amp corded trimmer at best. While the small circle makes easy to trim inside corners, mowing a ditch or embankment would be tedious. It cuts through brown stalks up to 1/8" in diameter and green stalks up to 3/16", fine for a manicured yard but any gas or large battery trimmer will do better. Toward the end of this season I purchased a 9.0Ah Flexvolt battery for my larger 20V Max tools including this trimmer. The big battery dramatically improved this trimmer's weight balance - it's almost perfectly neutral front-to-back when the forward handle is set for a 6' tall operator. Furthermore the trimmer doesn't bog down when edging the way it did with 3- and 4-Ah batteries, though it doesn't gain enough power to do tasks it couldn't do before.

I absolutely love this device
I absolutely love this device. I already had batteries for my other 20v Max devices, so I purchased the bare/base model that didn't come with a battery. I live in the burbs but have a pretty good sized yard. Even my smaller 2mah batteries will edge my lawn. I've used the larger 5mah battery to help out at my folks. They last a good amount of time and has plenty of power. The weight isn't too bad either. I purchased one for my father for father's day. He's 78 , had a hip replacement about two months ago, and can easily use it around their property.
