Wonderful machine
Just started using this machine. So far I really like it. Does a great job of sewing thicker seams that my old machine would not handle. Also like the fact that it is fairly lightweight. It is also easy to learn to use. Update...really pleased with what a great job it does sewing tapestry fabric and quilted fabrics. So far it is better than the Bernina sewing machine that I have for more than 30 years. Also like that the machine is lightweight enough that I can move it without straining my back.

I am in love with this machine. It can handle thick dog loads and harnesses. Way nice.
The best one yet. Last year I treated myself to a sewing machine, I returned it within a month, a day before the redund policy expired. I did this 3 times until I though I found a good fit. I used that machine for a year. I forced and struggled with thicker fabrics and finally broke it. And then I saw this one and instantly fell in love. I am self taught and I make dog vests ,coats and harnesses for rescues. I had a bunch of products started but my old machine was just not keeping up. Today this one arrived and I just cant express how much nicer it is. It glides through the nylon straps, like butter. It's quite, like a purr....for puuurrrrfect. I have been sewing on a variety of fabrics for 8 hours today and I just cant believe how beautiful and easy this machine is. Had I known then what I know now. I am in love with this machine. I did purchase the 3 year warranty through amazing for 6 bucks and change. This machine is worth the extra money. Way way better then my last brother gx37.

stress test ... passed!
Stress test. Repaired belt loops in jean pants. I've tried this before with lesser machines with difficulty. This machine breezed through it with just standard needles. Fresh needle, needed help feed it, but this machine passes the stress test. Not to mention the delivery! Ordered it Sat and it arrived the next day! Wow.

Great machine!
Oh heck yeah! Great machine!! 5 layers of Sunbrella fabric, (sailboat canvas) and whizzed right through them. Sure, I slowed down when I reached thick seams, that's just prudent, and the Brother ST731HD took on the task just as advertised. The self threader? Perfect. Looked over the directions, placed the thread in the proper position and moved the lever per the instructions. Childs play. Thanks to the previous Amazon reviews on this machine, those are what inspired me to buy this product. 5 Stars.

I love my Brother like a brother
The Brother Strong & Tough delivers a solid and straightforward machine with plenty of features to satisfy sewing demands. This machine is perfect for those who prefer the simplicity of mechanical operation over computerized. Although not as robust as an industrial model, the Strong & Tough beefs up many parts of the machine for added durability and increased sewing strength. I was able to easily sew through multiple layers of denim and even seat belt webbing. Plus, this sewing machine just looks cool with its rugged carbon fiber-esque panels and dark charcoal accents. This is a great sewing machine for masculine types who want to sew but aren't so fond of the flowery flourishes and pastel colors that predominate the industry.

Really is strong and tough
Was looking for a machine for sewing garments. This machine sews heavier fabrics like denim and corduroy easily, as well as light weight ones. Strong and tough, indeed.

Great Machine
I have been a seamstress all my life and at 70 I thought I knew about sewing machines. I have used a Bernina, which I felt was too fussy for me, and switched to Brother when I bought my first Serger. Besides the quality of Brother machines, I feel they are a great company that backs their products. With my Brother machines, I have made more than 40 Renaissance Court costumes, including King and Queen costumes. Now that I am a grandma (Meemo) I have started making doll clothes. I have had a computerized Brother for the last four years but because I am now planning on making covers for an outdoor lawn swing and patio chairs, I decided to get the Brother Strong and Tough to use with the heavyweight fabrics that will be necessary for those projects. Once I had this machine out of its box, it was set up in minutes. The stitches are nice and even and it is easy to adjust the tension and type of stitches. I have used it now on faile and dotted swiss while making dresses for my granddaughters' dolls and I have had my seven-year-old granddaughter using the machine as I teach her sewing. I had bought her a lightweight Brother as a birthday present but I think I am going to get one of these for her instead. It is a much better machine. I have stored my computerized machine to make room for this one on my sewing table. I find now that after all these years, I prefer the mechanical machine to the computerized ones. What a revelation! All the extra stitches on my computerized machine go to waste as any embroidery that needs to be done I do by hand. Always have. Always will. I appreciate that this machine has a rubber base to keep it from moving while I sew. I appreciate that none of the stitches skip and that it is easy to start sewing at the edge of the fabric without having to hold the threads in the back to keep the stitches from bunching. I like that the presser foot has an extra height adjustment to use on thick fabrics, something I will be needing when I make the lawn swing seats. There a couple of things I miss from my old machine but will adjust to quickly. The "down needle" button for pivoting fabric. The longer cord on the pedal foot which I could drop behind my table top instead of draping forward across the table. The quieter running motor, so I can sew at night without waking my grandkids and their parents up. These are all minor issues though in exchange for a really good machine that I expect will be the last one I get. All of the machine feet I have for my old Brother fit this machine as well, but the bobbins are a slightly different size and not interchangeable. It comes with four bobbins, and I had purchased more bobbins for my granddaughters' other machine that fit this machine just fine. AND it came with a Teflon foot which will come in handy on many of the fabrics I use for the doll clothes. I am a very satisfied customer. Thank you Brother for continuing to make such great products.

LOVE IT
This my first sewing machine in almost 20 years. I haven't sewn in at least that long. I read all the reviews and decided I needed this one. Well, I have not found anything wrong with this machine at all. I really really love it. I've sewn with poly, silk, canvas, jean in all the different stitchs--- all without any problems. It's very very easy. I haven't ventured in sewing vinyls and leather yet, but I know it won't be a problem. My sewing machine and I are gonna have a long happy life together ;-)

Better than a 4452
Comparing this to a Singer 4452. The build quality feels a lot better and the pedal is easier to use for control. You will get a lot more for a bit less with the Brother.
