Impressed with the 12 piece carbon steel wood carving kit! I have started carving my first wooden spoon and needed something more than the two knives I was using to complete the task at hand. Of course my first thought was to go on amazon and check to see what they had to offer. Gimars was the first suggestion that came up as a "Best seller" with a 12 piece kit for $14. The set comes with different shape sizes, although I only use about 4-5 which would be the deep, medium and shallow gouge, the narrow straight chisel and the wide straight chisel. A few pieces will need sharpening, but not all. The one's I mainly use didn't need sharpening. Only CON I have to complain about would be the caps that come with the knives. Many of them do not stay on the knives, and I have decided to throw a majority of them away because they've become a nuisance. 5/5 sarahdgaf.com

I am a beginner. This is a great set for beginners. It is affordable. The blade are good quality, hold an edge, and re-sharpen nicely. The handle are quite nice as well. The case isn't anything to write home about but is nice. It is a great variety of knives with good quality for the price. I am coming back to edit this review... and add something that I did using these knives. I know it isn't great but you can see that obviously the knives performed well.. You really can't go wrong... for the price these are great quality. The handles fit well in my hands, the blades are easy to maintain - I just love mine! I have bought a second set just to get the round tipped knife because I lost my original somewhere, but that is what these mean to me - willing to spend the money just one of these knives. What have you got to lose?

I bought these tools. They shipped fast. Yes you have to sharpen them. No it's not hard and yes if your working with the tool right they hold an edge just fine. I did have a small issue with one tool. I emailed the seller and they fixed my issue immediately with no hesitation. I would order these again in a heartbeat.

This is what you want. There are plenty of other, cheaper listings for similar tools, one of which I bought, but if you want something worth buying, spend just a little bit more and get these. Everything about these things is quality. They're strong, comfortable, and most importantly, very very sharp. These things cut through pumpkins like butter. I just tried them out today on my first pumpkin carving of the year, and was I ever impressed. Get these if you want something that works.

I have no idea how well these wood carving tools might work on wood, but they certainly are awesome on pumpkins. No flimsy blades, no wobbly handle connections; just good, sharp, solid cutting. I can finally achieve clean lines and detail on these festive smelly orange gourds.

These were awesome for scratching instead of carving. I wish I used them on a larger pumpkin.

Each year, we have a pumpkin carving get together as a family. I wanted to create a lacy design and the tools gave me exactly what I needed. The tools are easy to handle and sharp, easy to cut through the hard pumpkin flesh. Will try even more complex design next time. Look at the result!

I am totally pleased with these little carving tools. I have some larger palm type chisels but wanted something for lighter finish and detail work. On first impression they LOOKED a lot better than a previous set that I had bought. I like the fact that the handles are not round and have flattened sides. The others were bad about rolling off the table. The stain is pleasing and the ground edges look good and are even and sharp enough to start with. Now for the real facts. Tools are made to be used and looks really don't matter much. Before I use any new cutting tool I sharpen it. With these that was a pretty quick job. It mostly was just me polishing the edge with very fine stones and a strop. They went from very sharp to razor sharp in just a matter of minutes. I've tried them on bass, pine, and a piece of hickory and was rather startled by how easily and smoothly they cut. I think in part it is because the blade material is fairly thin compared to the palm chisels. The angle of the edge is a lot narrower and so slides into the wood better. I'm going to totally regrind those palm chisels! I haven't had them long enough to say for sure how long they will last but I am pretty good to my carving tools. I work with a steel, a 10,000 grit stone and strop beside me and keep the edge even and smooth so I don't have to sharpen them very often by removing metal. The metal has a nice feel to it. Carbon steel is just better than any stainless steel that I've found yet for wood working. It will rust but only if you don't take care of them. I have carbon steel knives that are nearly a hundred years old and they are still in good shape. The effort over time to care for carbon steel in a small but well spent bit of time. With stainless you are always trying to keep them sharp because if they dull they are totally dull. On the edge stainless is brittle where carbon steel will bend. A sharpening steel just bends that edge back up on carbon steel where on stainless, if you don't do it often enough, it will break the edge off leaving the knife totally dull and in need of some serious grind time on coarser stones to reclaim the edge. In the end, I like the way they look and like the handle shape. Carbon steel is a giant plus for me and the blades are well shaped straight and smooth. I even like the plastic pouch they came in. Normally I throw those away and make a leather or canvas tool roll. So far I just can't find any cons to these as long as you use them as they were intended, small light detail and finish work, and maintain the blades with a little oil.

I bought these for my stepdad (in his 70s) and he really likes them. He's into carpentry, but starting to slow down and not able to take on big projects so much anymore. This is perfect, so he can sit at the kitchen table and do little wood working projects. Makes a nice gift with wood blocks and an instruction booklet.

Awesome knifes! Very sharp and great quality!
