Great value, worth spending a bit more for a good grinder
LOVE IT! Two years ago I was given the pepper mill as a gift, love it so much, decided to get the salt grinder to match. Big enough to hold a lot, but not too heavy, and I can use it while wearing oven mitts. Keep in mind - when going from coarse grind to fine, you need to twist a few times to clear out the big chunks remaining in the works, before you get a fine grind. Fine is really fine, coarse is really chunky. Easy to keep clean, easy to reload, easy to use.

So far: Love it!
I'd bought my usual Lifetime Supply of grinding salt at a certain huge warehouse store whose name begins with a C, and found the plastic grinder was nonfunctional. Returned the salt (this C---- outfit being the one that will accept returns of practically anything, practically forever). After some calculation, the customer service clerk managed to get the busted grinder lid off the thing, leaving me with a lifetime supply of fancy pink salt but nothing to grind it in. I decided the path of least resistance was simply to buy a real grinder and fill it with this decorative salt, which I kept. So naturally, the minute I got home it was Off to Amazon!!! After perusing customer reviews of several salt grinders, I found a one by some guy who said he was a pro and wouldn't have anything other than the Cole & Mason...so ordered it up. Hot diggety: along it comes a few hours later...and it even comes with half a container of free salt! Add some of the pink salt, mix it up to make it look pretty, hold it over some food to try it out, and... Lo! It WORKS. It works exceptionally well. Not only does it produce a grind perfect for the dinner table or for cooking, you don't have to flip it upside down to dispense the salt. Just turn the mechanism on top. It's ridiculously easy to refill, and to my taste its design is attractive. Can't speak to its durability, because I've only had it a couple of weeks. But I'd venture that it LOOKS sturdy and feels substantial and sturdy in the hand...so I'm guessing it'll probably last for awhile.

Two Years and Still Excellent
I bought this Cole & Mason Derwent Pepper Grinder in February of 2015 and I'm just getting around to reviewing it. It has stood the test of time. I've had a dozen pepper mills over the decades (e.g. Peugeot, Unicorn, Kyocera, Oxo, etc.), and this Cole & Mason pepper grinder has always been my favorite for its consistent fine grind and durability. Maybe I've just been lucky since some other reviewers seem to have had problems. I'd buy this pepper grinder again in a heart beat.

I agree with Cook's Country TV show recommendation .
I bought this grinder about 6 months ago. I have liked it so much that I bought another one a month ago with enough confidence to gift it as a Christmas gift to a friend who is an enthusiastic chef . It has been 1 month. She loves it too! It holds lots of pepper, easy to refill, and the grinder coarseness is easily adjustable. I chose this grinder because it was the highest rated on the PBS cooking show "Cooks Country" . Now, is my favourite too! BUY IT!

love it. Reading all of the reviews I was ...
Bottom line: love it. Reading all of the reviews I was a little hesitant to go this route in case the top separated. The more I thought about it, since the top stainless piece is just decorative over the actual mechanism, I can't help but think you could just epoxy it on permanently if it did separate and you didn't want to just exchange it for a new one. I will let you know if mine ever does break and how it turns out. This grinder is the perfect size, not to big, not too small, holds enough peppercorns that you don't have to refill that often, looks great on the counter or table, is easy to use, the adjustable grind is genius and I use it all of the time. Best of all, this pepper mill drops almost nothing on the counter when you set it down (unlike all of my old ones). It has been used heavily for several months now, no issues.

Awesome grinder
As a chef I've purchase many grinders. For the most part they are garbage. This one really works! It will put large flakes of pepper on your food and lots of it at one time. The last grinder I bought wouldn't even grind pepper seeds. Some of the others took a long time to get the amount you needed and weren't course. If you want a great pepper mill then this is the one. Bite the bullet and buy it. you will be glad you did. UPDATE: The salt one also works very well. Gives you very course salt which most don't. Well worth the price.

unusual use: feeding my fish with it
works great to finely grind my ember tetra's food. I got the ember tetra's a little over a week ago, these are small fish that were unable or refusing to eat 'micro pellets' or hand crushed flake food. we use one of these mills for our pepper and noted the fine setting produces a uniform grind, so I thought I'd buy another one and try it on my ember's fish food. after a week of using a mix of 'micro pellets' and flake in the grinder my ember tretra's seem to like it and are doing great. next I'm going to try other food for them as I don't have to be concerned with food size.

Recommended by America’s Test Kitchen
America’s Test Kitchen rated this as their favorite Pepper Mill. It’s easily adjustable, goes from a fine grind to larger grounds if desired. Holds a half cup of normal size pepper corns, easy to fill, also looks good. We liked it so much we bought another one for sea salt. Now we have two, one for salt and one for pepper. In the photos you can see that all you have to do to fill it is pull the top off then once filled simply put it back on. The other photo shows the ground settings. There are 6 of them and you can see from top left to bottom right each setting from fine to course depending on your preference. We definately recommend this pepper mill.

Great Kitchen Tool
I waited a long time before I bought this pepper grinder, because it was relatively expensive. Now that I finally have it, I wish I had bought it years ago. The grinding is adjustable so that I get the grade of pepper that I want. The grind is uniform, so that you don't get a large piece of pepper that ends up sticking in your throat which takes your breath away. I highly recommend this product.

Extremely well designed and executed
I have been limping along with a 30 year old French pepper mill that just wasn't cutting it anymore, but I paid a lot for it and it served me well and has lots of good memories associated with it. Did my research and decided on this mill. Priced right, lots of good reviews. Have had it for a month and am very pleased with its performance, looks and ergonomics. It grinds consistently at the grind setting you put it on, it is so easy to turn and hold. Given the components it is made of, I expect to get many years of freshly ground pepper out of it, without hand fatigue. Highly recommend. As for complaints of it leaving pepper under it wherever its home is, well, if you have always used a pepper shaker with store bought ground pepper, get used to it and put a cute little decorative ceramic dish under it. Save those grinds and throw them in the stock pot or a stew. Enjoy.
