The auto feeder works by pausing operation of the tool for a few seconds and as it slows down it spits out the string like it's supposed to
I was a little leary of this tool after reading some of the one star comments. After receiving this tool from unboxing to operation was less than 10 minutes and that was without reading the directions. I had to lol about one review saying it's hard to change the black handle to different positions. Lol your not supposed move the handle, you move the 2 pivot points on the tool which gives you a wide array of positions. The auto feeder works by pausing operation of the tool for a few seconds and as it slows down it spits out the string like it's supposed to. Conclusion: some people should not operate any kind of power tools if they have no clue how to use them. Ignor the negative comments. BTW I have an average size yard and was able to Edge, trim and switch over to my blower all without a charge in between. Great tool. Oh 2 more comments about the negative reviews. One said the tool has all it's weight at the bottom which makes it difficult to operate. Yes that is true until you put the battery in. It then becomes a decently balance tool. Also I read the handle is flimsy. I imagine it would be if you didn't lock it in place. Best $50.00 weed trimmer out there. Have a good day.

Two tools in one; Really a great deal!!!
Got it with free next day because my B&D died. Purchased without charger or battery since two 4ah came with the G-Max mower we got in 2014. What a step up from an 18 volt device. I tilt the head and use the edger wheel to walk along the bottom rail of my white vinyl fence pulling away when I get to the posts! Looks so clean! The edger makes quick work cleaning up stray grass strands along the sidewalk and driveway too in between mowings! A few on/off clicks will release more line and if you release too much a cutting blade will cut off the excess. Went ahead and ordered the hedge trimmer with the pole extension which should arrive in two days. Already had the pole saw and the leaf blower and spare mower blade came today! Got to say I Really love this brand. Batteries still hold a solid charge after 3 years of mowing two quarter acre lots!

Perfect for Trimming and Edging
I bought this with the intention of using it as a string edger, but it is a masterful trimmer as well. Battery life seems to be great so far. I have about 6 sq ft of sod to edge and trim and it hasn't died during the job like past generations have yet. I am very happy with this purchase and this was the best price I could find, even compared to Lowes with 10% off. Some assembly required, but it's quick. I will say the line is a little thin and nimble. I will likely upgrade once I burn through this line. There is one extra line included, which is nice. I did not have the problem that other users have mentioned regarding the line being melted to itself and thus causing problems with auto feeding. One other important note is that this is not a tap auto feed. You have to either manually press the button to feed line, or wait for the head to stop spinning and then start it again. So yes, it automatically feeds the line, but in a way that is not quite ideal. But, I was expecting this, since that is how the previous generation worked. And for my use, it's fine. But, I do end up having to manually feed the line quite a bit since the line is so thin - again, why I plan to upgrade to a thicker line next. Oh, and this thing has plenty of power! I love it!

Does Not Require a Ding-a-ling to Operate
I have been overtaken by weeds. Although I love my Greenworks mower, it can't handle the weeds on its own. I needed something to get them down to a more manageable level. I decided to go with Greenworks since I had been happy with my mower purchase and already had two compatible batteries and a charger. I am a 5'2" woman with no prior experience in the use of trimmers. I can tell you though, that no penis is required to operate one, regardless of what other people in your life have tried convincing you of. Although it is nice to have one around to take turns doing chores with, you absolutely do not need a man to operate one of these. You are capable. You can do this. Put on some sunblock and get outside to show that yard who's boss. The first thing you should do is go to Youtube and watch a couple of videos. You can find everything from trimmer comparisons, to assembly instructions, how to thread the line, and of course, how to use it around your yard. Youtube is your friend in these things. The Greenworks 13-Inch 40V Cordless String trimmer is lightweight, easy to put together, and works well. Starting it is a breeze, there is no gas or oil to worry about dealing with, and it gets the job done. For regular maintenance, one fully charged battery should do the trick. For me, the weed situation got out of control, so it's taking a lot more than that. Plus I am always starting and stopping the trimming to look after my kids and do other stuff. What I really appreciate about the Greenworks products is that they are not nearly as loud as gas products. The sound is tolerable, and I can still somewhat hear the world around me. I am not left with a massive headache after using them. There is no pull cord to deal with. You push a button instead. It feels safe and really isn't intimidating. When my kids are older, I think this will be a good trimmer for them to use. Yard work was not something I did as a kid, and it was not something I saw women doing. My mother hired people to manage hers. I want my son and daughter both to learn and feel capable of handling maintenance tasks. If you are a parent and using this trimmer, I do want to give you a small piece of advice. Do not pretend to be a mafia enforcer going out to "whack" the weeds. Your kids will not find that funny. They won't get the joke. They will stare at you blankly and possibly sigh or roll their eyes while you stand there dejected. Learn from my mistake.

A great, quiet
Bought this cordless weed eater together with the Greenworks Twinforce lawn mower. The trimmer is lightweight and will not make your back feel crooked after a while. It also has guiding wheels for vertical operation, say at the sideline of a lawn. It does not need a lot of electricity, so the battery (even if you use the small 20 V one) hold the charge very long. The string will adjust automatically, so there's no hitting the ground all the time to extend the string, as with the older trimmers. A great, quiet, and powerful weed eater without the nuisance of an electrical cord.

After my first review I got note from the tech support after a few days. When I took their advise and tried, and did it right it actually worked. I also have the 19inch lawn mower love them both. Original review and tech support message below. This trimmer does work OK. I was debating giving it 3 stars because the auto advance does not advance as well as I would like. That may just me mine, other wise it performs well. Hello NB, Thank you for leaving a review. The auto-feed should release 1/4" of line each time the trimmer is turned on/off. You can test this feature by turning the unit on/off about 10x to see if the line advances. Also, check that the spool line has not retracted back into the spool housing and jamming up. The guard and metal flower guide should always be on while the string trimmer is in operation. If you are having any issues with the spool feed and would like further assistance. Please feel free to contact our support line at 1-888-909-6757 or email us at info@greenworkstools.com.

Good first impressions!
This trimmer is well built & balanced w/ the 4.0 Ahr battery. Our yard is mostly residential but one side is still wild forest. It worked well on the high grass but as I close to the brush & blackberry vines it bogged down. The trimmer head is very adjustable which helped on slopes & roadside ditches. Construction is pretty good & once you have the Greenworks battery the other tools are inexpensive to buy. I have yet to run the battery down by doing all the yard trimming. Seems to be a good product system & half the price of what you buy at the big box store.

Going Green! 40V Twin Force 20-Inch Mower, 390CFM Cordless Blower, and 13-Inch Cordless String trimmer.
Going Green! 40V Twin Force 20-Inch Mower, 390CFM Cordless Blower, and 13-Inch Cordless String trimmer. I have to say I was skeptical when I decided to purchase these GreenWorks tools. However, I have to say I am very happy with my purchases and very impressed with the quality of the equipment. All three pieces of equipment were very easy to assemble; I did not need to use the instructions that came with the equipment. There are some things to understand about these three pieces of equipment. Compared to gas powered equipment mower, blower, trimmer are all very very light. The lack of significant weight can be misleading and interpreted as a lack of power, however, this is untrue as all three pieces of equipment perform just as well as any gas-powered equipment that I have used. Pros and cons The pros to all three pieces of equipment do not very significantly. All three pieces of equipment are light, easy to maneuver, and appear to be very sturdy. The mower mulches grass significantly better than most of the gas-powered mowers I have used. I noticed a significant reduction in loose grass that was clumped and blown all over the sidewalk and driveway. One feature I particularly liked was the ability to start and stop almost instantly. This came in handy especially with the blower when needing to change direction. Finally, one of the pros is that the equipment is less intimidating than gas powered equipment. My wife ran the mower and the blower with ease considering this was the first time she ever cut grass. My mother came with two batteries and a charger while the blower came with one battery and one charger. This combination gave me one four-amp battery and two two-amp batteries. I have a small yard but the four-amp battery and one two-amp battery was more than enough to cut my grass, in fact the four-amp battery was completely used and the two-amp battery only used one green dot. The trimmer is as nice as any gas-powered trimmer I have owned. I especially like the edging feature, which works very nice. I cannot find too many cons to any of the equipment. Certainly, it takes time to learn how to work with new equipment however, none of the GreenWorks equipment appears to be overly complicated. I did read some negative reviews of the string trimmer. Understanding that you have to release the throttle and wait for the spool to click which indicates an advancement of the line is a key to understanding how to operate the trimmer. I find the included trimmer line is somewhat light and I will change it out once I use it all. Recommendation I would recommend this equipment anybody who desires equipment that is easier to work with and wants to move away from using gasoline. I would eventually like to try the snow blower especially here in Pennsylvania during one of our typical winters. In closing I will say this if you are on the fence go ahead and go green you will not be sorry.

Eco friendly meets Power on a budget!
As with the Greenworks mower, I cannot recommend this weed eater / trimmer enough! It's lightweight, and has no problem powering through weeds around my wood pile, in the unplanted flower beds, etc. where it really shines is the edging. My yard has a crisp professional edge with a little trench all around it, and I didn't have to buy a bajillion dollar echo trimmer to get it! The flipping between regular & edging modes is super easy. The adjusting pole angle also easy. You can control the speed & adjust the bottom hand hold more ways than any person could possibly need. lol I'm 6 feet tall, my husband is 5 ft 10in & both my sons are over 6 ft 2in- none of us has had a problem with finding a comfortable balanced hold. Also turning on & off is quick. There is zero setup time with this baby. Just pop in a battery & go. I can use a small or large battery with this (both came with mower). And it DOES come with an extra spool of line, unlike another review on here said. I have used this a lot (and against all kinds of hard wood, concrete, rocks that you're not supposed to) & still haven't made a dent in the string spool. I have no idea how long it will be before I need to use the 2nd spool, but am glad to have it on hand. I can't wait to get more Greenworks tools! They are literally changing my family's lives. 👏

No gas to mix, no starter cord to pull, it just works when needed!
I love this trimmer! I have a gas powered Echo that never starts first pull. It takes 6-12 pulls to get it going, then let it idle a while to warm up so it doesn't stall out. It's only 2-3 yrs old and is a pain in the ass to deal with. So much that I hate trimmer and procrastinate until weeds are 2ft tall before dealing with it. Not anymore! Slide a button with my thumb, squeeze the trigger, and off it goes. This single line chops and mulches better than the 2 string Echo with 5-pointed .095 strings. The pivoting head lets me adjust the angle to reach under benches by the fire pit and my deck, both of which stop the curved-shaft Echo. Rotating the head sideways works great for edging or reaching into narrow spots where the guard would get in the way. The auto-ratcheting string mechanism works better than any of the bump feeds I've used over the years (and HATE), and is so much faster than yanking and replacing the 2 strings on my Echo. One undocumented feature I've noticed is the head being recessed enough that long grass doesn't get kicked up and wrapped around the shaft eventually stalling the trimmer like with my Echo and previous trimmers. Having already purchased a chainsaw, push mower and tiller from Greenworks getting this for $50 to use the same batteries was a no-brainer! It's great being able to stop and start it with the push of a button while walking between spots I need to use it. No more vibrating my arms and hands the entire time needed to carry the gas trimmer or deal with the pull cord whenever I pick it back up.
