The Case of the Sky Rocketing Drone.
We received the drone as a Christmas gift for me and my daughter. We learned to fly it and we were working on filming while hovering. the camera works great with the phone app. The drone is very sensitive to any kind of wind so if you fly outdoors you will have to fly on the leeward side of a building as we did. I rated this 5 stars because of the customer service reply we had to a major problem. While attempting to fly it out doors on a very calm day my daughter synced the drone to the remote and calibrated the gyro. she depressed the take off button and the drone shot straight into the air at full throttle with no remote control input. The drone continued at full throttle until it was barely visible in the air.... 500 ft or so. It was then that it caught an upper breeze and began to drift away and no matter what we tried it would not respond to any remote control input or emergency shut down procedures listed in the manual (read the manual!) We watched as the drone drifted away into the state forest about 1/4 mile away. After about 4 or 5 minutes the drone battery lost power and the drone began a controlled descent. We watched as it descended and then plummeted into the woods. We spent the remaining part of the day and the next day searching for the drone which I believe is stuck in a very tall tree somewhere in the woods. This is where customer service stepped in... After a couple of emails and proof of purchase they replaced the drone. At first they offered 30% off but I was persistent that this malfunction was not operator error. They listened and Holy Stone sent out a replacement drone. That is great customer service. I highly recommend them for that reason. The drone is easy to fly and my daughter and I are having fun with it.

I got it for Christmas worked great for a few days
I got it for Christmas worked great for a few days. Took it out on the 29th turned it on calibrated fine, toggled up and that was it, I had no control and it just went straight up until I couldn't see it, I wish I had the camera on but I didn't. I would not buy this Item again or recommend to anyone $100 up up and away. January update, Nina at Holy Stone got in touch with me and after a few emails she agreed to send me a replacement. Wow did not see that coming but do appreciate that kind of customer service and have changed my rating from 1 to 5 stars. I do attach a tether when first power up outside just to be safe then land and unleash it. Great drone with camera for the money.

Would recomend extra batteries and an SD Card!

I really like this drone. My review has good and bad points.
First, a few caveats: I have competed at amateur level with RC cars using professional grade equipment. All RC devices have certain limitations due to the real world physics and common sense. Real helicopters have a means of active descent where the propeller pushes the aircraft down. This drone does not. It relies on gravity to descend. In strong wind, this drone will not descend. I understand the difference between a toy and a sophisticated RC device. Reading instructions for ANY complex electronic device is very important. Now for the review: It is very deserving of 5 stars. This is a great toy. It is a great starter drone for the novice remote control young person or adult. I bought this drone for my son as a Christmas present. Both of us have enjoyed flying it, and watching each other fly it. It was a little smaller than I expected. I provided a picture with a gallon milk jug for you. I insisted my son read the directions, particularly pages 3-9, 14 (the english sections). Key points are: Batteries need to cool before recharging. We started with 2 batteries that came with the drone, and purchased 2 more at the same time. Charge time is around 100 minutes. Flight time is advertised 7-8min. We experience 7--10.5minutes depending on how much time we spend landing/taking off. Motors require 10 minutes cool-down time between flights (according to the instructions). We have used a stopwatch on our IPhone to help us keep track of time. Wind is very bad. Do not fly in wind. Our experience has been >5mph and/or gusts are to be AVOIDED. Drone trim instructions are hidden on page 4. My daughter pointed them out to me. Range is 100 meters (according to the instructions). Our experience: We configure the gyro every flight. We spent several flights indoors. First, just taking off/landing. We graduated to moving around the front room, down the hall, up stairs, etc…. First flight outside was in >5mph wind. We did not take the drone over 5’. Fighting the wind was the primary focus. While able to nose down into the wind, we imagined how the wind could take the drone. Hitting the corner of the wall in between the propeller guards produce a very disturbing crunch. However, we have not had any damage. Tumbling off the side of a landing pad coffee table looks bad, but there has been no damage. Concerned about range, we paced off 100 meters down the street. I carried the drone while my son turned the motors on/off about every 15 seconds. Control was intermittent at about 80 meters. Communication was completely lost at about 130 meters. On calm days, the rate of descent is very slow. I have a little bit of anxiety not being able to just drop out of the sky. However, the rate is such that it will not crash unless it loses power completely. When the drone is nearly out of power, the running lights flash. When the drone determines it is out of battery power, it descends on its own. Be certain the drone is near a landing area when nearly out of power. I like this drone. I might get one for myself. After we become proficient with this drone, we are planning to share cost for upgrading to a professional grade drone. Statement concerning bad reviews: I was concerned about some of the bad reviews. I bought this drone anyways. I have decided that those reviewers either did not read and/or follow the instructions, are not aware of limitations of sophisticated electronic RC toys, do not understand that breakage will occur, or are not yet skilled in operating RC equipment.

Really nice drone for a beginner or an advanced pilot who wants something to practice with. The user support is fantastic!
This drone is exceptionally stable in flight. It is the most stable drone I have that doesn't have GPS or optical hold. Of course, it is at the mercy of wind or air currents, but it holds its altitude exceptionally well. The low rpm props make it very quiet. It is less than 250 grams, so it is not governed by any U.S. FAA rules. I have only two complaints about this drone are that it automatically lands or descends to about 30 feet when it loses control signal or has low battery, respectively. They are software problems which are easily fixed. The customer support for Holy Stone drones is the best I've ever encountered. If you visit the HolyStone.com site, you will get a pop-up support window, and my experience is that there is always someone there who is willing and able to help you. There is also a phone number, but I haven't tried that yet. I had a out-of-range fly-away with my first F181 and Holy Stone sent me a new one in less than a week. I could not have asked for more. I have heard that future Holy Stone drones will have GPS. That will make them even more competitive. I flew my F181W for six batteries today at a local soccer field. That's about an hour of actual flight time. It's a lot of fun to fly and it's a great little practice drone as long as you remember that it is NOT an expensive professional drone with GPS. You have to fly it ALL THE TIME because it will drift with any wind currents as soon you neglect it. You cannot just let go of the controls and expect it to hover in place like you can with the DJI drones, for instance. However, the Altitude Hold works exceptionally well. Also, you have to make sure to stay in range at about 100 meters because you cannot rely on the RTH (Return To Home). As for the camera, the video is jerky and the photos are acceptable, but that's not why you should buy this drone. It's a fun and relatively inexpensive way to practice your stick (control) skills.

Formerly disgruntled purchaser
Reviewers are quick to write a 1 star review replete with complaints.(me included). In fact my first F181 was returned along with a free replacement.I ultimately received another free replacement and I bought another on Letgo for $25. I learned to operate the drone sucessfully by ignoring the manual for the most part and watched several videos on U Tube (in understandable English) Other than replacing all the motors in both freebies I had a ball learning to fly in a small apartmen living room.{I was so pleased that a pang of guilty conscience prompted me to order this one with the FPV camera.) BOTTOM LINE: Out of the box everything worked as represented. Now a happy camper PS: I did buy extra motors

Great first drone.
This review is coming from a first time drone owners and operator. I didn't really know what to expect with this drone although I had high hopes with the previous reviews. I will say that Holy Stone customer service was all over it with three emails before I even received the package welcoming me to the family and giving me numerous ways to contact them with any questions. Assembly was pretty straight forward although this is where I have my one critique, please make the provided screwdriver magnetic. The screws for the prop guards and the landing gear are tiny and a magnetic tip screwdriver would make all the difference. I have enclose a few picture of the box and shipping materials as I received it. I purchased a 4 way charger that came with 4 850 Mah batteries and will charge all 4 in less than an hour. The quad copter comes with 2 750 Mah batteries with one of them charged and in the battery compartment already. I seem to get between 8 and 10 minutes of flying time from a battery so not to bad. My first flight after pairing the remote to the quad copter was in my house due to inclement weather here on the Oregon coast. I was able to take off and maneuver with minimal issues right off the bat. Altitude hold works pretty well, just seems to be a slight amount of side drift which seems to be getting better the more I fly it. It will do flips in any direction with ease even indoors. I was able to download the app for my LG G6 with no issues. You just have to go to the bottom of the screen and click the English tab unless you are fluent in the language it starts in. I have paired it up with my phone but have not yet flown it with video hooked up. All in all it has been a good experience. With no knowledge at all of drones this is easy to fly and you will catch the bug quickly. I hop this has been a help to those not sure about buying their first drone. You can't go wrong with this for the price.

Great 1st drone/don’t fly too far up or away
Great beginner drone. It will be easily overpowered by minor winds. The camera works fine but it isn’t HD. Great drone for the money. **update** I previously posted that winds would not bother too much and I am here to say they will. I found that I could only fly my drone first thing in the morning when the winds were zero/calm. Furthermore, the link between the copter and remote/phone breaks up easily causing the copter to become uncontrollable. Last night I was videoing and had a great flight only to realize on playback that the video only recorded pieces of the event and not the whole thing in steady flow. Now this morning, with no winds, I launched and got the craft airborne, all of a sudden my link disconnected and it flew off. It maintained altitude but flew away and then descended somewhere beyond my line of sight. So my drone is gone. The video playback was great up until you see it turn heading and break loose. Video stopped and I assume that’s when the link was disrupted. I have decent experience in drones and own about four. If you purchase this, it is good for low level flying. If you ascend above the trees(which it can do) make sure you are able to descend it down immediately should connection start to become unstable. I am going to contact holystone to see how they respond to this issue. Update soon. Latest Update My contact with Holy Stone was quick and painless. I explained the situation and after a follow up email they are taking care of me. Feel confident in your purchase of any Holy Stone products.

Awesome starter drone
This is our first real drone. My 10 year old son had a cheap $20 remote helicopter previously that he could do OK with but lost interest due to lack of controls. I decided to try this one based on the features and the feedback from customers about Holy Stone's service. The camera is not great but good for the application and a starter drone. Battery life seems to be right on what they said it would be. We were both easily flying the drone after just one session. We could fly around obstacles, land it, and use the built in flip button. Range seems good but we have not tested it yet. Drone will auto descend when the battery gets low but does not have enough power for a soft landing if over 50 feet or so. We've flown it into things and so far it is holding up well. My son hit something hard and there is a very small crack in the drone housing near the on/off switch but it seems fine. The blade guards and landing gear seem very forgiving. We've only had it a week so I cannot comment on longevity but so far it is great. We bought extra batteries so he can fly it for longer periods. By the time he gets the battery replaced and the old one put away it is only a few more minutes to hit the 10 minute recommended cooldown. We use it with the controller and an I-pod connected with Wi-Fi. So cool to see the camera view as you fly. I expected a learning curve for a drone but this one was extremely easy and lets you jump right in and do some fairly detailed flying. I think that this will suit our needs for quite a while. Based on our experience so far I would recommend this drone.
