This recorder is a great pro-sumer buy
For run and gun, low budget film and video making this is the ticket. I usually record the boom into 2 tracks with the dual track recording feature to have a loud and a soft recording as well as 2 lavs, giving me a wide range of audio choices in post-production.

Excellent Step Up from the H4n
I used the Zoom H4n for years to record audio at events like weddings, school plays, dance recitals, etc. But one of the XLR jacks finally died, and I needed a replacement. The F4 was on sale, so I took a chance, and LOVE IT! The sound quality is noticeably improved over the H4n. Having a set of line level inputs (1/4" jacks) on the F4 is also a big help when you never know what connections will be available. I normally connect a stereo mic for nat sound as well as stereo board feed, and this unit allows me to set up the inputs in pairs, so one knob controls both sides. I can also monitor either stereo pair separately with the headphones, whereas the H4n only allowed monitoring the mixed signal. Finally, I never realized how helpful it is to have a DAR with Timecode. The unit always starts and stops recording exactly at the frame level. And with a timecode input, it can be jam synced to other devices.

Excellent recorder, I love the quality that comes out of this thing. :)

Amazing sound
Amazing sound! Wish it had true 3.5mm mic input though, not just as return channels.

A great piece of equipment
The Zoom F4 is a wonderful tool to have. I use it almost daily as an audio interface, both for recording and mixing, and it often sees use as a field mixer both on the film set and off set for effects. It's solidly built, sounds great, and is relatively easy to use. In the field, I can power it all day from a TalentCell battery pack.

I had a Tascam DR-701D before this, and the Zoom is much easier to use. It also is very reliable and works when you need it to.

Lives up to reputation
This works as advertised, and is a very good field recorder, with a decent user interface, solid features, and very good sound recording.

Very good recorder. Headphone amp is a little weak but it's good enough to use pretty accurately. Best recorder I've used yet and I've used a few. Things are a bit less than if you bought sound devices recorder sure. Still for the money it's pretty amazing. Really love it already. Also bought the pcf4 bag and it's the right piece of gear for this recorder, if you have or want to have a small kit.

I absolutely love this device
I absolutely love this device. The sound quality is great and it has a lot of important features not found in the Zoom H series products. Like being able to monitor a return feed from the camera without plugging your headphones into the camera. Also, being able to hear only one channel without turning off other channels while recording. I hated this with the Zoom H4N. There are many times when you only want to hear one MIC to see where a popping or bad sound may be coming from. In any case Best product in this price range by far.
